Like so many others it runs through background information on the Hebrew prophets and provides summaries of the books that bear their names. There are however some distinctions to Lundbom's Introduction. His emphasis is on the literary ability and features of the prophets but not to the demise of the individuals themselves as is so trendy today. First dealt with is the concept of the prophet in Old Testament times followed by an analysis of their messages. Individuals like Samuel, Nathan and Gad are included as well as the so-called writing prophets. Lundbom's choice is a bit selective so Huldah is included while other less known prophets like Ahijah are not.The summary discussion of various prophets' messages is followed by a discussion of how they were authenticated that includes an interesting assessment of false prophets. Lundbom correctly recognizes the reality of this phenomenon as more than an alternative religious perspective or a literary foil. The book ends with a lengthy discussion of Hebrew rhetorical devices, which is a specialty of the author. Though a bit tedious, this is a very helpful section even if biased toward Jeremiah.Overall the book is quite worth reading. Though well versed in the prophets Lundbom is more familiar with older works and gives plenty of visibility to past scholarship like Skinner, Orlinsky, Albright, etc. Missing, for example, is any real discussion of ancient Near Eastern prophetic materials or feminist concerns. There are few works in the bibliography that date beyond the 1990's.
