About the Author

After graduating from the Girls’ Latin School in Boston, Paula Bruice earned an A.B. from Mount Holyoke College and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Virginia. She then received an NIH postdoctoral fellowship for study in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Virginia Medical School and held a postdoctoral appointment in the Department of Pharmacology at Yale Medical School. Paula has been a member of the faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara since 1972, where she has received the Associated Students Teacher of the Year Award, the Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award, two Mortar Board Professor of the Year Awards, and the UCSB Alumni Association Teaching Award.

Get This Book ASAP! My college textbook was Organic Chemistry 9th edition by John E. McMurry. I hated this book so much because it doesn't explain very well. If you do chapter outlines, like I do, it makes you sleepy and not finish it in one day or two. There is not enough chapter problems and only a few work problems are given each chapter. It took me 8 weeks to figure out that I needed something else to use and found this book. Wade Organic Chemistry is by far much better and it sucks that it took me this long to realized that other books out there. Each chapter he summarizes the reactions mechanisms, which McMurry lacks off. If you're that kind of person who loves writing notes buy this book.

Renting this book through Amazon is really the only way to go. I didn't have to spend $150 buying or renting the book from the book store, and I came on Amazon and rented it for $50 with the shipping. You really can't go wrong with that. The book is really good, it has a lot of examples throughout the chapters. I mean its organic chemistry its not the easiest read, but with all the examples it really helps you out. At the end of each chapter they do a really good job of summing up the important points and give good examples. This book saved my life while taking organic chemistry, so it is definitely something you should consider.

Through my college experience I have used many textbooks and this is by far the most well written of all. Dr. Bruice makes learning Ochem easy and the textbook really answers any "why" questions in a way that resolidifies basic chemistry concepts. Between the text and the solutions manual there are plenty of practice questions for the student to master the concepts of organic chemistry. The one aspect of this text that I absolutely love is that when a concept is discussed, even in later chapters, she directs the reader back to where this concept was first established. This tool is extremely helpful when you are reading and don't understand where she is getting this information from or drawing a conclusion from. It directs you back to the first time the concept is explained and gives you a solid foundation that really helps you to master the subject of organic chemistry. However, this edition has incorrect information about SN1 or SN2 reactions since a scientific discover was made in 2011 or so. We were told to correct certain parts of the book, but I am still not sure how much this error effects the correctness of the text as a whole.

The Bruice O Chem textbook explains the subject matter exceptionally well!! I bought the Bruice text to fill in the holes left by a course's assigned textbook. I compared about 15 different book options in store before purchasing. This book does not disappoint! It thoroughly breaks down topics using both words and pictures without over-complicating an already tough subject. Additionally, it refers the student back to specific chapters when "old" information is need to understand the new. I highly recommend it!

I needed this textbook for an Organic Chemistry class and after two semesters, I found that this book was typically very clear explaining concepts, with good illustrations and diagrams, and problem solving hints for the in-chapter problems. If you register at MasteringChemistry online, you will have access to a digital text as well as power point presentations for each chapter that introduce the main topics. I ordered the book new, and it and access to MasteringChemistry came as ordered and I was glad to save some money vs. purchasing at the college bookstore.

I am using this as a supplemental text to the Great Courses organic chemistry course. The course guide book is keyed to the Wade textbook. I am delighted with the clarity of the text, the visual appeal of the figures, and the fidelity of the course lectures and the reading keys.Organic chemistry is not an easy subject. It requires discipline, pattern recognition, learning nomenclature, and understanding electron attraction. Wade enables these requirements through this text. I highly recommend!

Aside from being an O chem book, the descriptions of reactions and all the steps and who what why where are pretty well laid out and explained in a decent way. I used it a lot to study and at some points, it was more effective than my professor.

i took this text, the 6th edition, last year for the full year course of organic chem. I and II. this text may be the 7th edition, but i am willing to bet 95% of it is EXACTLY the same as the 6th edition's text! plus, no one will buy the 6th edition, so what good is my advice if no one will read it there?for my 6th edition book, the examples were very clear and the text was easy to understand. the problem solving tips and hints that littered the pages really enhanced and encapsulated key portions of the text, making it very easy to understand what was sometimes nebulous. i am a chemistry major and i count myself lucky to have had such a fine texbook to be my guide.i heard alot of horror stories from others about organic chemistry, but with wade's textbook on my desktop, i passed the course (received an a in org 1 and had a b+ in org 2) and actually learned quite bit.some advice for beginning students- get the book called "the nuts and bolts of organic chemistry" and read it the semester before you take the course. it will really prime you for what lies ahead. also, work lots of problems while reading the textbook. if you can, do what i did and work every single problem!! come test time, you'll be thoroughly prepared for those monsters. finally, try to understand the reactions- memorizing them really is not much help on the tests. i would know- i tried it!!!the course final is, well, an evil creature straight from the darkest pit of hell. its done by the top tier members of the ACS society (they're a bunch of ph.ds in chemistry) and is really tough. study hard for that bugger... but i did good following that formula i just laid out and hopefully if someone reads this, you will too!!best of luck!

I love well written history. This account reads as interestingly as a novel. I would say it stands up to some very notable and well known histories I have read such as; William Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, Son of the Morning Star about George Armstrong Custer, the Bruce Catton Civil war histories and so forth. This is a magnificent work on 3 fronts: 1) The interworkings of the British government during a near world wide war with France over the colonies of North America and elsewhere, as well as the continent of Europe. 2) The effect on the American colonists and their views as being equal as English colonists to every Englishman in Britain with the same rights and privileges - which the government of Britain and the King did not agree on (which made the American Revolution inevitable). 3) The fascinating differences between how the British and French dealt with the various Indian nations, and the repercussions of that on trade, Indian attacks and war with the colonists, the colonists expanding the colonies westward, and so much more. Vivid details are included, famous people included in the narrative are many, including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, famous Colonial Governors, British generals, Pontiac, and many of the other famous chiefs of Indian nations. It's the history of England, Canada, America and the French and Indian Wars with a touch of Last of the Mohicans. A very very fascinating read.

This is probably one of the best history books I have ever read. This is in no small measure due to the fact that Anderson is a terrific writer, which made this a very hard book to put down, despite its length. His style made the book flow, and I am amazed at his ability to easily sequence the multitude of events which took place in Europe and in North America. There were no rough transitions, and more importantly, Anderson was able to effectively transition from the strategic to the operational to the tactical, and back again without losing me in the wealth of detail. Anderson also was able to focus on a cast of characters and bring them to life in a way which only added depth to the narrative. Anderson’s analysis of this conflict was excellent. In beginning Part VII 1761- 1763, Anderson reviewed the war in terms of influential cultural factors, which neatly supplemented his political and military analysis. He effectively showed how this war significantly altered the British conception and implementation of Empire, and the political consequences this caused in the home islands. I also think that Anderson strongly defended and proved his thesis that this war was the one which laid the foundation for the rift between the American colonies and Britain. In carrying his narrative beyond the Treaty of Paris in 1763, to political events in 1766, Anderson detailed American reactions to the parliamentary acts which from a British perspective, were designed to bind the Americans closer to the Mother country, but significantly backfired from an American perspective. Anderson included a wealth of illustrations, and most importantly, maps which enables the reader to easily follow the narrative geographically, and emphasizes the strategic points Anderson makes throughout the book. I truly enjoyed this from beginning to end, and will amply reward any reader who picks it up.

Crucible of WarEvery now and then I like reading a big one, so I had to roll up my sleeves for this book. Jumping ahead, at times tempting, seemed risky; I didn’t want to lose continuity or leave gaps. So many theaters of history are intertwined here. The relations of the American Indians with each other as well as their involvement with both France and England, the evolution of new military tactics to conform with the wilderness of North America, and a failure to unify a consistent military direction. At times the action goes to the halls of the English Parliament, then to ongoing wars in Europe as well as naval incursions among the Islands of the Caribbean, but always returning to the arena of the British Colonies of North America as well as those of New France (Canada). It was strange to see George Washington in a non starring role, but his presence is there, especially in the first part of the book; and he makes appearances toward the end. But in this we see that the scope of the conflict went far beyond any single person, nor was it bound to any one location. The actual war ends at about page 525, then there’s 200 pages concerning post-war Indian relations and the first strong hints of mutual cohesion among the colonial provinces, which ultimately galvanizes with the Stamp Act and Currency Act. Many statesmen and generals are presented, revealing strengths and weaknesses. It helps to keep a written list of names. I wont give it away, but I was surprised to see the ultimate fate of Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa Indians.The paperback edition feels like a brick packed with knowledge, pliable yet not flimsy, the cover is sturdy and, at least my copy, has a dim sandy-friction texture which conforms nicely to the touch. 746 actual reading pages, before an ocean of footnotes, themselves holding great interest. Print size is a bit small (read some of the microprint in the footnotes, then come back and the letters will seem large).Maps in front, and also throughout the text. Pictures of the generals and statesmen at intervals.Lastly, if due to constraints of time, this book seems a bit too much, I’ve also read Walter Borneman’s less voluminous coverage of The French and Indian War, itself a very sound treatment of the period. Notwithstanding its smaller size, his book has meat on the bones; it is not a skeleton by any means.

Second time reading this book and each time I have gained something. I own this book, as I find it has some really good ideas in it that encourage further readings of it and other books of this time period. The first book I have read that lays out the theory that this is the war that really led the colonists to rebel. The author presents a convincing theory, and does a good job at backing it up. His book is cited in numerous other histories of this time period as well-written or well worth using as a source. While detailed, it doesn't bog down the reader in uninteresting details, and is a good book for those interested in this time period and willing to read more than a concise history.

Alot of information but very small. Definitely not worth $10.00. Or maybe I'm just too frugal. Eight pages with pictures. About 100 pages. Written 2006. Could easily fit in fanny pack.

The look of this item is very decieving. It is so small ,it fits in the palm of my hand and the info in it, you can find on any website. Not worth the $10 I paid ofr it. A ripoff.

I was terribly disappointed in this 2006 tiny book on Cozumel. It was a waste of money. I can't believe that I just paid [...] for a travel book which I will throw in the trash after a 45 minute read. More current information is shown on my Can-Do travel guide map. And, yes, I did go to the website which was referred to in a previous review, to check out updates and changes. There I found only a few name changes for restaurants.In all fairness, I was not looking for a guide which listed only food sources, shopping and night life. That was 3/4 of this book's offerings. I wanted in depth information about places to visit of natural and ecological interest and historical interest. Specifically I wanted more information on Punta Sur Park in the south and Punta Molas in the north of the island. Nothing was found in this book. Also, in fairness, I had previously read some standard current travel guides on Cozumel, but hoped to get some in-depth information from this book---based on the reviews I read.My advise, order a 2009 Foder's Cancun, Cozumet etc Guide and a Can-Do Travel Guide map of Cozumel and you will have much more current and in-depth information than this book provides.

This is a great guide and worth every penny! My family just got back from a Cozumel vacation Nov 21 - Nov 30, 2008 and found this guide to be a great planning asset. We didn't leave the hotel without it because it either fit into my shorts pocket or into my wife's purse. We used it everyday to help us plan our daily activities, as well as, our breakfast, lunch and dinner plans. The guide was published late in 2006 (after the hurricane) and is still very accurate, we only found 2 places that had either closed or changed names. The guide is presented as a "Best Of" list from everything from best dinning, best shopping, to the best beaches, and the descriptions are detailed and accurate. The guide never steered us wrong, we were happy with every recommendation. There is even an overall island map and a map of the downtown area to help you on your adventures. I wanted a travel guide that focused only on Cozumel and not the surrounding Yucatan/Playa Del Carmen/Cancun; this is indeed what I was looking for. There were no reviews on this guide when I purchased, there should be! Please don't hesitate, this guide is awesome. We also purchased the Cozumel Can-Do map, but liked this guide better.

Great resource! Wouldn't leave home without it. It proved to be a very valuable item before and on the trip.

I would recommend this book to others! It is small so that it is easy to include in your luggage.

I really like this book. It's easier to read and understand than the serger books that came with my machines. It has a lot of pictures to help with understanding what the author is trying to get across. I go to this book when I have ANY problem going on with my stitches and it tells me why and how to correct them. To me, this is a must have book to add to your sewing library. She covers everything you need to know from cleaning your serger, to threads, to tension, needles, feet, how to work with knit fabric, flatlocking, and serging curves to name just a few topics. You will not be disappointed with this book!

I had always wanted a serger but I didn't know why because I never really knew what it did. This book really explains it in easy to understand language. It's full of tips and techniques for a variety of fabrics, applications and machines.I got this at the same time as my first serger. It makes an excellent supplement to the manual. A serger can go from a multitasking, valuable sewing must-have to a maddening wad of tangled thread torture device in a matter of seconds. This book is the only thing that came between my serger and a baseball bat on several occasions.If you're new to serging, get this and start reading it before you even open the serger box. Even if you're an experienced serger ("serger-er?" "Serger operator?"), I bet you'll find alot of helpful info in it that you'll wonder how you ever did without.

I've owned and used sergers for many years. This serger hand book is perfect for the novice and the experienced sew-ist. Easy explanations, many photos, all kinds of useful information. I'm the type of person that take the machine out of the box and just starts to use it. When I have a problem...then I look in the manual. This book answers questions and has beautiful colors photos the manuals to my sergers just don't come with.

Just got my first Serger. This book has great detailed photos of the different stitches and of the machine. From threading to which stitch to use to setup and trouble shooting...this book has it all. I especially liked the topic discussion of various types of threads available and the detailed info on how to set up the machine for the different stitches. Some of the stitches covered are the 2/3/4 thread Overlock stitches; 2 thread chainstitch; Cover stitch; Rolled hem; 4/5 thread Safety stitch...and more! Must have book!

I read about this book in several reviews of several serger models. I looked at it one day and it was a reasonable price. Apparently HSN also sold and plugged this book and it soon sold out. With the shortage the prices soared in one week. There were used in good condition copies listed for above $300.00. No thanks!! The only book I would pay that for would be a really cool Bible. A little patience and ordering it elsewhere twice only to be told it wasn't really in stock, I finally found it here and actually recieved it. It has very easy to follow hints and directions. The writer has a sense of humor making it more than just a mundane handbook. I am not new to sergers but have still found it helpful and worth the price I paid and the hassle to get it. I think someone new to sergers would exponentially benefit from this book. Chris James has a way of making the daunting task of mastering a serger sound a whole lot easier than I found it fifteen years ago. I really wish I had found this book back then. I might not have given up on my $1,000.00 monster. I feel strongly enough about the usefulness of this handbook to say, if the short stock is a indication that it is about to be updated, I would purchase the most current copy. This is from 1998 and could actually use a makeover.Happy Serging!!

Nice book for the price. Concise but thorough with good pictures.I only use 3 threads and 1 needle, and this book mainly discusses 4 threads and sometimes 2 needles. Maybe when I have more serger experience I will work up the nerve to try 4 threads / 2 needles.

I can't say enough about this book. I ordered a serger on line and I had a particular purpose in mind. You have to know that I failed sewing in school, have owned five sewing machines since then and never learned to use any of them properly. Before it was delivered I ordered this book from Amazon with one day shipping and so I had it for two days before the serger arrived. During those two days I read it from cover to cover and then over again. I was still terrified but felt that I had learned a lot. My machine came pre-threaded and so I sat right down to practice. Voila a great first try, but now for my projects' rolled hem. I read my machines instructions and was able do it on my practice fabric. Now I needed to change thread colors. The tie on method didn't work for me so I decided to thread from scratch. I read my manual and watched the video, followed all of the instructions and thought I had done it right, but the thread broke and so did the needle. Then I remembered the book had mentioned broken thread and needles and so I went right to the chapter. There was the answer. "The lower looper thread must overlap the upper looper thread otherwise the thread will break every time". Why didn't the manual or the video mention this? If I never learn another thing, that little gem of advice was worth the price, but the book is full of all the information I need. It has a place of honor on a shelf above my sewing table and will be there for years to come. If you are a newbee like me, buy this book. You won't regret it.

Really love this book. Gave it to my granddaughter for Christmas. She hasn't had time to use it yet but I'm hoping she and her Mom will soon have a girl's spa day. Really like that it has techniques for calming, like easy yoga poses.

This is a fun book for tween girls. It provides natural recipes for caring for skin, hair, and nails. Several of the recipes contain ingredients that you might not have on hand, but there are plenty that use regular pantry staples. Along with the recipes are self care tips for caring for the tweens’ skin, hair, and nails that encourage the formation of healthy habits that can last a lifetime. The book style is fun and bright to appeal to tweens. The tween girls that I know seem to be very interested beauty tips and spa time so I think this would be a hit with this age group. In fact, I think this book would a great birthday gift for a tween girl when given with supplies to make some of the recipes.I received an advance reading copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
