This is my absolute favorite kids' Bible story book. With scripture location of story listed at the beginning to go to the Bible and read with older kids, the condensed story (which are 100% true, no added info, and honest about biblical situations in a child-appropriate way whereas so many bible books for kids change the story when it talks about more mature things), a phrase to remember about what God is showing as through the story, a key verse that isn't from the story but is related, and a "bedtime prayer" to tie it all together and help teach kids how to talk to God...this book is jam-pack full of everything you need (just have a bible on hand too!) To have deeper devotionals with your kids--read little ones! The pictures are engaging as well. We love this book and have gone through it twice already with our 3 year old!**If I could change anything, it would be the image of the ark used on the cover and in the story that depict an unrealistic boat that could in no way float or hold all the animals. But other than that, this book, its contents and graphics, are fabulous!

This book is absolutely beautiful. It arrived on time and as pictured. The artwork is absolutely gorgeous. The colors are bright and vibrant. The stories are a bit too advanced for my 4 year old to follow, but they are a good mix of childishness and maturity. It retains the morals of the bible while making it more appealing to the younger readers. I would purchase from this buyer again, as well as recommend the product.

With a 3 and 5 year old, I get a little intimidated with ways to implement Jesus that really bring joy to daily routines. I never write reviews, and this one is my first. Not only do I love the quality of this book, but the content too. The stories have scripture references and build off each other. I love the prayers at the end, and the pictures are beautiful. It’s hasn’t even been a week, and the boys are already grabbing it for their bedtime stories while jumping for joy and asking for Jesus stories. I’m in awe. This is exactly what I was looking for. Even their dad loves to read it with them. So happy.

Our two year old, and one year old LOVE having this book read to them. The two year old brings it to me and says, "Mommy I want to read about Jesus" and then he prays along with me (there are prayers that are at the end of each short story). I think my one year old loves the colors of the illustrations. Great addition to their library. :)

This is a really sweet book for the younger ones - I bought this for my grandchildren 6 & 4 and for a little Sunday school class that they attend with another girl who is 7 & one who is 3. I just used it today and they loved it - the pictures are so cute & altho we have other bible story books at church - this one is condensed enough to make the story go quickly & be understandable & interesting to the younger ones. They liked it so much I just ordered another to keep at home f& read to the grandchildren (they didn’t want me to leave it at church) a big hit!

This is our new bedtime book. My kiddo loves the beautiful pictures and the stories are summed up in the right amount of time so the little one doesn’t get bored. I love that each bible story has a verse, a blessing and prayer. That’s a great way to have the important take always from the story sink in. Quite a few times my kiddo has randomly repeated a blessing from this book. Warms my heart.

Love this book and my little girl does too. I love the way they kept the content of the Bible yet made it easy for young children to understand. We've made it to the story of Ruth so far and it has all been on point.

This is the best book! The hard cover is great quality ans the pages seem a little thicker allowing my son to turn the pages without me freaking out that hes going to rip it. Each night my 3 year old and I read a bible story to learn a little more about God's wonders. The bed time prayer is short and sweet allowing him to recite it after me. I recommend this to all parents!

If Christians are looking for support for their Hellenized version of the afterlife, this is not the book to provide that. But if you are open to exploring new ideas and philosophy that is compatible with a Christian faith, but maybe not consistent with its history, this book is a great read. I thought more about the afetr life, our ideas of it, and why we believe the way we do, while reading this book, than any other book I have read. The book should be part of any Christian library, not because it supports your view, but because it helps you think more deeply about them. I finished the book, not agreeing with Hick's final conclusion, but thankful for spending the time to read what he wrote.

I've read and re-read a number of books by this author.

very heady and difficult to understand for the average seminary reader. I am not a philosopher. Hick jumps around and really has a hard time with thesis statements. There aren't any! prerequisite should be a class in basic world religion.

John Hick (1922-2012) was an English philosopher of religion and theologian who taught at such institutions as Cornell University, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Cambridge University. He has written/edited many other books, such as Evil and the God of Love,The Myth of God Incarnate, etc.He wrote in the Preface to this 1976 book, “the religions of the world declare that this life is part of a much larger existence which transcends our life-span as animal organisms, whether through the continuance of individual consciousnesses or through participation in a greater transpersonal life. I believe that this basic religious claim is very likely to be true. I shall argue that it is not ruled out by any established findings or by any agreed philosophical arguments. Both … [are] realistically conceivable; as also are some forms of the idea of rebirth on this earth… I shall further argue that any religious understanding of human existence… positively requires some kind of immortality belief and would be radically incoherent without it.” (Pg. 11)He adds in the first chapter, “I shall try to show that life after death is not impossible, although to accept it as a possibility depends upon a different understanding of man’s nature than that which underlies the negative dogma; and against those who profess positive knowledge of man’s destiny beyond the grave I shall try to show that a number of very different conceptions of the after-life are theoretically viable and that we have at present no decisive means of choosing between them.” (Pg. 26)He argues, “the conservative and liberal theologians… have been so embarrassed by the traditional Christian hope that they have tried either to suppress the eschatological element within Christianity altogether or else to present it without the scandalous affirmation of personal life after death.” (Pg. 93)He acknowledges, “In rejecting mind/brain identity, then, we accept mind/brain dualism. We accept, that is to say, that mind is a reality of a different kind from matter.” (Pg. 119-120)He suggests, “It is extremely probable that the spirits… who seem to be communicating directly in the mediumistic trance, are some kind of secondary personality of the medium… But when one reads the detailed transcripts of the best sittings with the best mediums… one is at least strongly tempted to think that a distinctive still-living mind was communicating… It is also possible that there is sometimes telepathic contact between a medium and a surviving human person, the result being presented through the machinery of a secondary personality of the medium.” (Pg. 143-144)He points out, “the idea of immortality … is an essential basis for any view which could count towards a solution of the theological problem of human suffering. Such a ‘solution’ must consist, not in denying the reality of suffering, but in showing how it is to be justified or redeemed.” (Pg. 157)He asserts, “A considerable debate has taken place over the years concerning the bodily or visionary, physical or psychological or para-psychological, character of the resurrection. But what is chiefly important for Christians is to see that neither the reality nor the religious significance of the resurrection event depends upon the outcome… of that debate. The essential features of the resurrection gospel recorded in Acts are that God had raised up Jesus, giving him power and authority… and that Jesus was alive…” (Pg. 173) After reviewing differences in the various gospel resurrection accounts, he observes, “It is evident both that these various strands of tradition are incapable of being fully harmonized, and that the New Testament shows a development from a simple proclamation of the living reality of the glorified Lord to detailed stories of his bodily presence and speech, characterized by progressive degeneration from history to legend.” (Pg. 177)He states, “for a conscious creature to undergo physical and mental torture through unending time… is horrible and disturbing beyond words; and the thought of such torment being deliberately inflicted by divine decree is totally incompatible with the idea of God as infinite love… justice could never demand for finite human sins the infinite penalty of eternal pain; such unending torment could never serve any positive or reformative purpose because it never ends; and it renders any coherent Christian theodicy impossible by giving the evils of sin and suffering an eternal lodgment within God’s creation. Accordingly contemporary theologians who do not accept the doctrine of universal salvation usually speak of the finally lost as passing out of existence rather than as endlessly enduring the torments of hell-fire.” (Pg. 200-201)But he presents an argument against Universalism: “God has endowed us with a genuine freedom, so that we cannot be saved without our own positive and voluntary response to him. No doubt God could by omnipotent power override the human will; but so long as he affirms man’s existence as a free and responsible being he cannot fulfil his saving purpose without man’s free co-operation, It therefore remains possible that some will fail to co-operate and will instead become so hardened in a self-enclosed blindness as never to respond to God. Accordingly we are not entitled to make the positive affirmation that all WILL eventually be saved.” (Pg. 242-243)He suggests, “In the parable of the sheep and the goats… Jesus was warning his hearers of the fearful danger that envelops loveless and self-enclosed minds… He was saying bluntly to all who are living in selfish disregard of human need: If you go on like this you will be damned. But in speaking in this way Jesus was not discussing the general question whether anyone … ever will remain in this state beyond the point of no return… It may well be true that at a given point within the temporal process that unless you repent you will surely perish, and yet also true … that in the end all will turn from their wickedness and live. The two truths are formally compatible…” (Pg. 249)He says, “since man has been created by God for God, and is basically oriented towards him, there is no final opposition between God’s saving will and our human nature acting in freedom; and that accordingly the universalist argument is not after all undermined by the fact of human freedom.” (Pg. 254) He adds, “in the end all human life will, in traditional theological language, be ‘saved.’ We must thus affirm the ultimate salvation of all mankind… this is that in which we have affirmed God’s saving love and sovereign power.” (Pg. 259)He proposes, “Reincarnation is not, and has never been, an orthodox Christian belief. But is does not absolutely follow from this that it could never become an orthodox Christian belief. The history of Christianity shows a number of instances of important ideas which at one time formed no part of accepted Christian teaching but which at a later time have been taught in substantial parts, at least, of Christendom.” (Pg. 365) Later, he adds, “There are forms of reincarnation doctrine which MAY be broadly true pictures of what actually happens.” (Pg. 391)He concludes, “the sense of our ultimate belonging together in total community is the unselfish love which the New Testament calls ‘agape.’ … What Christians call the Mystical Body of Christ within the life of God, and Hindus the universal Atman which we all are, and Mahayana Buddhists the self-transcending unity in the Dharma Body of the Buddha, consists of the wholes of ultimately perfected humanity beyond the existence of separate egos.” (Pg. 464)This is a thought-provoking survey, that will be of great interest to anyone studying life after death and reincarnation, as well as the doctrine of Universalism.

We accept, that is to say, that mind is a reality of a different kind from matter.” (Pg. 119-120)He suggests, “It is extremely probable that the spirits… who seem to be communicating directly in the mediumistic trance, are some kind of secondary personality of the medium… But when one reads the detailed transcripts of the best sittings with the best mediums… one is at least strongly tempted to think that a distinctive still-living mind was communicating… It is also possible that there is sometimes telepathic contact between a medium and a surviving human person, the result being presented through the machinery of a secondary personality of the medium.” (Pg. 143-144)He points out, “the idea of immortality … is an essential basis for any view which could count towards a solution of the theological problem of human suffering. Such a ‘solution’ must consist, not in denying the reality of suffering, but in showing how it is to be justified or redeemed.” (Pg. 157)He asserts, “A considerable debate has taken place over the years concerning the bodily or visionary, physical or psychological or para-psychological, character of the resurrection. But what is chiefly important for Christians is to see that neither the reality nor the religious significance of the resurrection event depends upon the outcome… of that debate. The essential features of the resurrection gospel recorded in Acts are that God had raised up Jesus, giving him power and authority… and that Jesus was alive…” (Pg. 173) After reviewing differences in the various gospel resurrection accounts, he observes, “It is evident both that these various strands of tradition are incapable of being fully harmonized, and that the New Testament shows a development from a simple proclamation of the living reality of the glorified Lord to detailed stories of his bodily presence and speech, characterized by progressive degeneration from history to legend.” (Pg. 177)He states, “for a conscious creature to undergo physical and mental torture through unending time… is horrible and disturbing beyond words; and the thought of such torment being deliberately inflicted by divine decree is totally incompatible with the idea of God as infinite love… justice could never demand for finite human sins the infinite penalty of eternal pain; such unending torment could never serve any positive or reformative purpose because it never ends; and it renders any coherent Christian theodicy impossible by giving the evils of sin and suffering an eternal lodgment within God’s creation. Accordingly contemporary theologians who do not accept the doctrine of universal salvation usually speak of the finally lost as passing out of existence rather than as endlessly enduring the torments of hell-fire.” (Pg. 200-201)But he presents an argument against Universalism: “God has endowed us with a genuine freedom, so that we cannot be saved without our own positive and voluntary response to him. No doubt God could by omnipotent power override the human will; but so long as he affirms man’s existence as a free and responsible being he cannot fulfil his saving purpose without man’s free co-operation, It therefore remains possible that some will fail to co-operate and will instead become so hardened in a self-enclosed blindness as never to respond to God. Accordingly we are not entitled to make the positive affirmation that all WILL eventually be saved.” (Pg. 242-243)He suggests, “In the parable of the sheep and the goats… Jesus was warning his hearers of the fearful danger that envelops loveless and self-enclosed minds… He was saying bluntly to all who are living in selfish disregard of human need: If you go on like this you will be damned. But in speaking in this way Jesus was not discussing the general question whether anyone … ever will remain in this state beyond the point of no return… It may well be true that at a given point within the temporal process that unless you repent you will surely perish, and yet also true … that in the end all will turn from their wickedness and live. The two truths are formally compatible…” (Pg. 249)He says, “since man has been created by God for God, and is basically oriented towards him, there is no final opposition between God’s saving will and our human nature acting in freedom; and that accordingly the universalist argument is not after all undermined by the fact of human freedom.” (Pg. 254) He adds, “in the end all human life will, in traditional theological language, be ‘saved.’ We must thus affirm the ultimate salvation of all mankind… this is that in which we have affirmed God’s saving love and sovereign power.” (Pg. 259)He proposes, “Reincarnation is not, and has never been, an orthodox Christian belief. But is does not absolutely follow from this that it could never become an orthodox Christian belief. The history of Christianity shows a number of instances of important ideas which at one time formed no part of accepted Christian teaching but which at a later time have been taught in substantial parts, at least, of Christendom.” (Pg. 365) Later, he adds, “There are forms of reincarnation doctrine which MAY be broadly true pictures of what actually happens.” (Pg. 391)He concludes, “the sense of our ultimate belonging together in total community is the unselfish love which the New Testament calls ‘agape.’ … What Christians call the Mystical Body of Christ within the life of God, and Hindus the universal Atman which we all are, and Mahayana Buddhists the self-transcending unity in the Dharma Body of the Buddha, consists of the wholes of ultimately perfected humanity beyond the existence of separate egos.” (Pg. 464)This is a thought-provoking survey, that will be of great interest to anyone studying life after death and reincarnation, as well as the doctrine of Universalism.

About the Author

Alexei Ivanov was born in 1969 just outside Moscow. He served in the Soviet Armed Forces for four and a half years. He is an avid collector of Russian militaria, and he is especially interested in the Russian Civil War period. He divides his time between Russia and his home in Cambridgeshire.Philip Jowett was born in Leeds in 1961, and has always been interested in military history. His first Osprey book was the ground-breaking Men-at-Arms 306: 'Chinese Civil War Armies 1911–49'; he has since published a three-part sequence on The Italian Army 1940-45 (Men-at-Arms 340, 349 & 353). A rugby league enthusiast and amateur genealogist, he is married and lives in Leeds.

This was an excellent book for me since I knew very little about this war before I read it. This was sort of a practice for World War I. One thing I found interesting was the Japanese military was actually more caring to the Manchurian and Chinese civilians than the Russians were. The behavior during the Second World War by the Japanese was they were uncivilized, barbaric, and degenerate killers/torturers, etc.The failure of the Russians to win any major battles directly resulted in the downfall of the Romanov Dynasty in 1917, along with a variety of other factors.

I probably own about 20 or so Osprey titles, mostly about ancient history, but a few about WWI and the time period immediately before and after that conflict. This is my favorite Osprey title, in terms of content and superlative execution.The book contains a satisfactory chronology of the war, and sections on new technology and innovations which came into play, such as machine guns, trench warfare, aerial observation, and telephone communications.There is also a section on use of local Chinese in paramilitary roles by both sides, more effectively, incidentally, by the Japanese.The authors explore the level of training, morale, and discipline on both sides. They also detail the kinds of troops that Russia employed: local Siberian militia, Cossacks, line infantry, and frontier guards, the last of which, as it turned out, were the best of the Russian troops in terms of their effectiveness. Unfortunately for Russia, the frontier guards only fielded 55 companies of 250 men each. The section on Japan has less information on troop types, focusing on their relatively good standard of living and treatment, and high level of motivation.There is a good amount of detail on uniforms, but not too much: I don't read these books to find out what color piping the 1st regiment of the 2nd brigade wore. There is just enough to satisfy one's interest in how the troops were outfitted and equipped, in a general way.The plates are simply outstanding: on the Russian side, there are pages depicting summer uniforms, winter uniforms, Cossacks, and frontier and naval uniforms. The Japanese plates show early war uniforms, which were of an old-style pattern, and also summer and winter uniforms.It was interesting to read that even though the war was well-observed by foreign military representatives, they didn't seem to take the lessons to heart, and repeated the same mistakes at the beginning of the Great War. I'm referring to such things as underestimation of the effectiveness of machine guns as an offensive & defensive weapon, and also the importance of good defensive trenches. Most notably in this respect, the reliance on elan and the "offensive spirit" in lieu of good planning and leadership, which in just over a decade destroyed the cream of France, Great Britain, and Germany.

Lately, it seems as if Osprey's Men-at-Arms series has degenerated from its previously decent summaries into a series devoted to explaining obscure military buttons and uniform features. Alexei Ivanov, a former Russian army officer, appears to have actually produced a Men-at-Arms title that is fairly fresh and original, featuring the oft-neglected Russo-Japanese War. Ivanov has not only done excellent research on the Russian side (and readers will enjoy his collection of Russian military photographs), but he has provided good insight into the Japanese side as well. Although Ivanov does discuss uniforms as well as organization, he does not get wrapped up in minor details; instead, he offers a soldier's perspective on why this piece of equipment or uniform item was important. In sum, this little volume on the Russo-Japanese War is a gem. After a decent introduction and a fairly detailed chronology, Ivanov provides a very interesting section on military innovations in the war (machineguns, communications, trench warfare, observation balloons and guerrilla warfare). For example, few other histories mention that the Russians introduced two wireless radio companies just before the end of the war. Similarly, Ivanov spends the time to discuss how the Russians and Japanese used machineguns differently. For once, a Men-at-Arms title has been written for military specialists and not just model-builders or re-enactors. Ivanov then provides a succinct but detailed summary of the Russian army in 1904, providing details on order of battle, organization, equipment and morale. Although Ivanov spends about seven pages discussing Russian uniforms, he does not beat the reader to death with minutiae. The sections on the Japanese army are noticeably shorter, but quite decent. The heart of the volume of course is the color plates, which are well worth the cost of this title. The color plates are Russian staff; Russian summer and winter uniforms; Russian Cossacks; Russian Frontier and naval troops; Japanese early war uniforms; Japanese Khaki uniforms; Japanese winter uniforms. The photographs are also quite good, including many from the author's collection.

This is indeed a picture book. It may be more suited for the younger crowd, but adults will like the colorful illustrations of the uniforms, ranks, and soldiers of the Russo-Japanese War. If you are reading a more detailed and academic text on the confrontation, odds are you won't have the kind or number of illustrations presented here showing the details, in color, of what the soldiers looked like. This little text is a great supplement for those who study the war and want a better visual of the soldiers and their uniforms. This is not just for kids.

Typically good Osprey "Cliff Notes" for the topic.A quibble: The table on p. 41 for Japanese ranks doesn't match the captions for photos on pp. 37 or 39, or the text for plates F1 or G2. According to the table, the "tough veteran" (Plate G2) would be a private 2nd class... ;)A map of the campaign area wouldn't have hurt, either.
