Guy Delisle is the award-winning author of the travelogues Burma Chronicles,Jerusalem, Pyongyang, and Shenzhen as well as the 2013 graphic novelA User's Guide to Neglectful Parenting. I’ve been always interested in knowing more about the Holy City. I discovered this book in our high school library. The easy comic book like narrative immediately caught my attention because of the many facts it presented, first hand and easy to understand. I immediately wanted the Kindle edition.

I have now read all of Guy de Lisle's books, and they are a continuing education about places in the world I may never see in person. I love his style, his low-key approach, his subtle humor. He has taught me so much about the issues we all face in the world, and I would recommend these books to anyone with any curiosity at all about peace, war, isolation and its effects. Just outstanding. And my nephew loved this one too, a continuation of conversations we have had about Israel. Thank you!

I've been buying all the Guy Delisle travel memoirs. They're interesting and relaxing. His experiences feel lived-in.

Perfect description of living in Jerusalem as an expat.

This comic account is both funny and on point! Highly recommend this graphic novel both as entertainment and accuracy of what it's really like living between Israelis and Palestinians.

And don't want him to come back home.Very quickly he remembers why. Well bits of it anyway. Enough to know he'd made their lives hell since being kicked out of the NFL for anger management issues. He's determined to discover where he's been for the past 8 months and why all of a sudden he seems to have a handle on his anger. And why is an old school 'friend' he hasn't seen in 20-odd years suddenly reappeared in his life?Using the timeless theme of the Stevenson classic story: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as background Rubart weaves a wonderful tale of self-discovery of exploring the good and evil within each of us. And how we can claim victory over the evil or Mr Hyde-part of our personality.I so enjoyed how Rubart addressed the theme in story. This is powerful story-telling and be great to see more novels fowling a similar bent of exploring how the Holy Spirit can indeed transform us from the inside out. The fruit of the Spirit of Galatians 2:22-23 is indeed available to us but only through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit as Romans 12:2 outlines.Like all Rubart novels there's a bit of supernatural activity that can appear a little weird and out of place, however, in the context of the transformative power of the Holy Spirit he probably didn't have any other choice in being able to show the change in Toren's personality in such a short period of time. Something drastic did have to occur. In reality, it's unlikely that engrained habits can be transformed in such a short period of time. But, hey, this is fiction.Toren and his estranged wife, Sloane, were excellent characters. There were some tremendous scenes featuring the two of them that showed the juxtaposition between what they once had, their current state and the possibility of a new improved version.As an aside, I was reading this novel while I was on a 5 day retreat where I was studying and practicing models of personal transformation and it was fabulous to read something fictional that demonstrated the power of transformation. I'm sure this was part of the reason I so enjoyed the story and in particular, the themes Rubart addresses in it.Very highly recommended.

This book transformed my life!Anyone who knows me well knows that saying I love to read is an understatement. I couldn’t begin to try to count the number of books I have read in my 55 years. Just now I finished my favorite book, other than the Bible, that I have ever read in my life! If I had the money I would give a copy to everyone willing to read it with their hearts and not just their heads. It was more than mind blowing! It was heart restoring. I believe with my heart that God lead this man to write this book! The Man He Never Was by James Rubart will take you on a journey through a man’s life and in a way your life and mine!

Rubart continues to grow in craftsmanship as a writer of meaningful stories. If you try to compare his newest release to his most recent successes, "The Five Times I Met Myself" or "The Long Journey to Jake Palmer," you could easily miss that Rubart has a gift of building fictional characters that mirror our real-life struggles. The characters may not always be likable, but they are authentic.In "The Man He Never Was," you'll meet Toren, a has-been football player struggling with a larger-than-life temper that is about to cost him everything that he is only just beginning to realize that he needs in his life. Almost as quickly as you meet Toren, you're going to become frustrated with him. He is not an endearing protagonist. You'll probably also become frustrated with the dialogue in this book as well. I did. Although I did not initially want to root for Toren, I wanted answers. I wanted resolution, but the book seemed to be going nowhere for a while. There was an endless stream of questions from Toren in the midst of his struggles. He asks the questions that the reader is thinking, but the questions are often only answered with other cryptic questions from people trying to "help" as Toren struggles to find meaning, if not hope, through his circumstances.It is through the frustration of trying to decipher these cryptic conversations that the reader begins to empathize with Toren and consequently to see yourself as Toren. How Rubart is able to do that is commendable. Don't overlook that. There are countless authors who fall short of this ability in their writing. Rubart uses the blueprint of Robert Louis Stephenson's Jekyll and Hyde to pen this story, but this idea was not original with Stephenson. In Romans 7, Paul describes his own struggle to do what is right in his life. It is easier said than done. It is easier to resolve than to live it out. Especially when met with test after test that will only strengthen or weaken your faith. Toren experiences just that throughout this book.If you've enjoyed Rubart's other works, he has earned your trust to read this one as well, even though it is a different kind of book. (If you haven't read his other books, they are even better than this one!) Whereas his other successful books seem to have an air of mystery and magic and hope in the plot, this one seems to be missing the magic and hope. Seems to be. However, Rubart uses this to open your eyes to the plight of Toren, who also had no hope, and it is only if you are able to experience that in these pages that you are able to eventually discover the same truth that Toren discovers.I hope Rubart has a sequel in the works.

James Rubart is so good w/his books in bringing to us the truth inside of us. This story deals w/Dr Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. The two sides of ourselves deep in us that lead us to our inner most selves. Where we battle between our good and evil that drives each of us.Toren Daniels wakes one morning in a strange hotel room and has no idea how he got there!! In trying to figure out what has happened, he notices something else.....he feels peaceful instead of edge waiting to lose control? This is so unlike him and he wonders what has happened to him. Thankfully, he receives a package from the main desk that gives him a little info. In time, he goes home and finds out they thought he had died. He had been gone for 8 months!!!!The rest of the story is finding out where he was and what he must do to finally be rid of Mr. Hyde. Follow his journey and see if he receives healing and if he gets his life back!!! God does remarkable things in his life and draws him closer to God!!!! Rubarts books are u forgettable!!!!! Wow!I’m almost at a loss for words to describe AN ELEGANT DEFENSE and emphasize not only how important but also how interesting this book is. So I begin my comments with an exclamation (wow).This is a science book. But (whoa, don’t go away) it is probably unlike any science book you’ve had experience with. It is casual and easy to understand. And even though it does contain scientific words, Matt Richtel occasionally reminds the reader what they mean and how they are applicable to what he then describes.I am not a scientific or medical person. I only decided to read this because Richtel is a Pulitzer Prize winner for his A DEADLY WANDERING. And was I surprised that someone could make the science of the immune system so darned interesting. Honestly, it was as if I was reading an exciting thriller last night when I stayed up reading this book until I fell asleep sometime past midnight. Maybe that’s because he gives real-life examples of what he is talking about.Richtel divides AN ELEGANT DEFENSE into five parts, each perfectly named (as are the chapters). First he introduces us to four people, examples for “the extraordinary new science of the immune system.” Next comes the science, which Richtel still manages to keep casual, even humorous at times. And he sometimes adds to this part other real-life examples. The remainder of the book concentrates more on the people he began with.Much, maybe most, of AN ELEGANT DEFENSE is personal. Yes, I learned a lot. But I think, even with these readable explanations and examples showing how our immune systems are so important to everything about our bodies, this book absorbed me because Richtel makes it personal, especially Jason. Pooh fans, this is a really neat book and a must-have for your library. Lots of history and interesting facts about the origins of Pooh, the area the stories are set in, and the Milne family. Painstaking research and good writing.

I found the "Natural World of Winnie-the Pooh" charming as well as lovingly described by the authors. The inclusion of the watercolor prints made my memories come alive as I remembered reading all the stories and poems to my four children. I have the copies still and those were read to grandchildren as well as Great grandchildren now.I learned so much about the author and the artist, as well as the landscape and its presence in the stories of Winnie and his friends. In an age when everything must be reality, imagination suffers, this little book is a giant of what we miss so deeply, it is a treasure that I have recommended to my friends, all of whom have their worn, dog eared copies of "Winnie" and who remember with love the hours spent with their children reading and walking through the Hundred Acre Woods. This is an important companion to the original book

Wonderfully written and easy to read. Insightful look at the natural wonders that inspired the classic stories by A.A.Milne. In addition, there is a look at the collaboration with the illustrator, E. H. Shepard and the flora and fauna that still exists today. Makes you want to get outside and take a closer look at the beautiful world that surrounds us.The author took me back to a time when days were long and lazy and you could let your mind wander with possibilities. I enjoyed the historical aspects of what life was like in that time and how a young boy's curiosity and simple ways of entertaining himself inspired a father, with an observant eye, to capture the essence of childhood.

This was truly a well written and researched book, and although it has been years (decades) since Winnie the Pooh was read in our home. getting to learn about A.A. Milne and Ashdown Forest has now inspired me to revisited his books, and a deep appreciation for the passion, time and dedication that Kathyrn Aalto put into this book.Icing on the cake is that she is in our hometown tonight here in the States, and getting see One Hundred Acre Wood through her eyes...this is a must read for everyone who still believes in the magic that stories bring!

Christmas gift for 88 year old, spry, British mom. She loves it. Has photographs of the English countryside too, which she loves. I'm so pleased!

I am enjoying this immensely. I love the Pooh books (the originals, Disney should be punished!)... and love tales set in the English country side. This has become my bedtime read.. a few pages of gentle humor and natural beauty. I am so glad I bought it, and am already planning which of my children to pass it down to.

When I purchased this book, I was not expecting much more than a nice "coffee table book with some nice antidotes and interesting facts. I primarily bought it for the nice graphics, photos an em Shepard illustrations, which are hard to find in a good quality print book these days.However, once I started reading the text I was pleasantly surprised to find an insightful informative text told in a narrative almost as magical as the original pooh books. The author very obviously loved writing this and it shows on every page.

It is a beautiful book. I'm 78 rears old and it is a Christmas present to me. I will share it with a friend who has actually been there.
