#5,963 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought several Dr. Seuss board books, and this is one of my favorites. Each page has one or two pictures with a short phrase underneath each one. They describing different types of feet or situations in which feet are involved: left foot, right foot, front feet, back feet, feet in the day, feet in the night, etc). The vocabulary is simple. It rhymes but the words are not just random (compared with the ABC book) or non-sense words (compared with the Wocket in My Pocket). It reads with a nice rhythm and pace. I also appreciate the cohesion of the board book: the last page repeats the theme "how many different feet you meet" from an earlier page and captures the theme of the book. Although I started reading this book to the baby when she was just a few months old, she didn't start enjoying it until she was about a year old. Now this is the first Dr. Seuss book she grabs for me to read to her. It's easy enough to read that, if you are bilingual, you can alternate between reading it in English and in another language (making up the translations on the way).I didn't read the original version of this book until recently, and I was surprised by how much more wordy it is. And the original does get a lot more complicated, with a plethera of feet going everywhere! There are more pictures and more words per page. And I noticed that this board version only covers maybe half of the original book. Being an English teacher (and having a graduate degree in language education), I can tell you that this version is probably better suited for language learning with its simpler vocabuary and simpler pictures (which helps connect the words to what they see). Those who are more familiar with the original may feel disappointed at the changes that were made, but I would suggest that you take this book for what it is: an easy to read rhyme book for learning vocabulary.

I like that it’s a sturdy board book, BUT the book has different wording and isn’t sequentially the same as the original. This REALLY confuses my grand-daughter. I can “read” the original words, but the picture’s not in the same order bothers her.

This books is the best! I have never been a fan of Dr. Suess, but ALL KIDS love THE FOOT BOOK. I was given the book when my first grandchild was born and he was reading it to me (easy to remember) when he was 2. Since then all my grandchildren go for this book before toys when they come to my house. I had to recently buy another because my first one was starting to fall apart. I always include this book with a baby shower gift. By the way, the ages of my grandchildren are 1, 2, 6 and 12.

8 pages of opposites.Very minimal text. Small board book. Good colors for baby to look at.Quality is better than nearly all other board books. We’d recommend.

Our 10-month old, now 12-month old baby LOVES LOVES LOVES this book. She sits up and gets excited every time we read it. She's even learning to be gentle with the pages. I have read that all the Seuss board books are abridged, so we got the hard cover. It's fun to read - we look at it every night.

For some reason, I thought this book would be of regular size (12 inches long), but it was one of those small really hardback books (board books) for babies that was about 6 inches long. You know the kind of book that has very hard edges because babies like to chew on books.

We've loved this book so much, we're having to buy a replacement for our original copy. My husband and I both prefer the text to the board book edition over the full paperback version - it's shorter and punchier. Love it!

Every Dr. Seuss book is fantastic and this one doesn't disappoint. I bought this because my daughter had colored all over our other one. I should have read the description a little closer though--- This is a smaller version of the book.

This book will fit into the palm of my hand. It is not described as such. I couldn't return it as I needed it for my class. The students couldn't see the pictures as I read it to them. The pages are thick cardboard which led to "is this a baby book"?..."why did you buy us a baby book, we won't tear it up". Disappointing to say the least.

Very attention riveting story, held me to the end, surprised me many times. I wish there was another novel in this series, I really like the characters

I work for a small, plaintiff's law firm and after I read The Professor, I bought copies for both of the attorneys at our firm. I purchased copies of Between Black and White (BB&#) for them before I ever read it - I suspected it would be very good. When you live in or around Little Rock, Arkansas, you understand what Pulaski Tennessee, goes through. The first thing people think when Little Rock comes up, is the integration crises of 1959. The interesting thing is that Pulaski, Tennessee, and Pulaski County, Arkansas, where Little Rock is located, are both named for Polish Count Casimir Pulaski. Having said that, I strongly encourage you to read The Professor before you read BB&W, it will give you background on the characters and the action. I started reading this book Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. and I didn't take off my PJs, didn't go get my mail, didn't eat a bite of anything. I drank two cups of coffee and fixed myself a glass of Coke. I was just about there when my son and his wife came over. They stayed no more than 30 minutes and left. I immediately returned to my book and at 9:00 p.m. closed it - finished. As a 5 year old boy, Bo Haynes watched as his dad was hung by 10 members of the Ku Klux Klan. Although he knew who one of the men was, because he was so accustomed to hearing his voice, the Sheriff said he couldn't take the word of a 5 year old boy about the man's voice. Point to remember. Before his dad walked out into the night to face what he knew was coming, he made his son promise, among other things he would take care of his momma (Point to remember), and he would make something of himself. The next morning his momma was gone and he never saw her again. Sports, football in particular, a blown out knee, and a law professor challenged him to do what he promised his daddy he would do. He graduated from Alabama School of Law and returned to Pulaski, Tennessee, to put the men who hanged his daddy in jail. There you have the plot of the book, it's the twists and turns that make it interesting. I had an idea how it would turn out but boy was I wrong. I didn't see those two coming, the brother and sister, the boy and his "daddy" - nope those were complete surprises. Block some time out when you start this book because you won't want to quit reading it until your finish it.

Between Black and White is a great follow-up book to The Professor, picking up where The Professor left off. The 1960s were difficult times in the South and old ways were hard to let go of even for those who knew they were wrong. Being originally from Lawrence County, the characters and places were recognizable and real. I'm hopeful there will be another book continuing on Tom McMurtrie and Rick Drake's legal defense of those whose case seem already lost. My husband was a "country" lawyer and I a legal assistant so I can relate to the difficulty of defending those who most had already convicted before trial. Congratulations, Robert Bailey on another great read.

This is the second legal thriller involving Retired law professor Tom McMurtrie and his partner (and former student) Rick Drake. I really enjoyed the first book in this series The Professor (McMurtrie and Drake Legal Thrillers) and looked forward to reading this book when I had the chance. In this book, another former student, Bo Haynes, is arrested for the murder of a former leader of the KKK, a person that Bo had often accused of murdering his father in a hate crime years earlier – a crime he had witnessed as a small child. The evidence seems overwhelming and Tom and Rick agree to defend Haynes in this major criminal case. The story is excellent – you won’t get any spoilers from me, but the twists and turns go right to the end – with a couple huge plot twists that I can’t say I didn’t see coming, but were skillfully brought forward in a way that was totally satisfying. If you are a big college football fan you’ll love the references to football – I’m not, but it sure didn’t interfere with the story line. I can’t wait until the next installment comes out.

I enjoyed the first book by Robert Bailey, "The Professor". Being the first book in a series, there was a lot of character building but the story was good. "Between Black and White" took this series to a whole different level! It involves a murder case, a black male accused of killing a former klansmen in Pulaski, Tennessee. There is suspense, danger and twists and turns you never see coming. I highly recommend "Between Black and White" as it depicts a "true 21st Century American South" where the ancient lines that were drawn in the 1950's still exist....but they are not respected as they were: and when it's all said and done, the truth is more important than all else.

I am a big fan of Robert Daily......into his third book of this series and look forward to the new one coming out. The Professor, Between Black and White and now The Last Trial have all left me wanting more. The books are "stand alone" for the most part but the story has the same characters and really should be followed to get the full impact of the situation. Tom McMurtrie is someone I can relate to......old enough to know better but does it anyway. After reading all of Scott Pratt's books this series by Daily is one I am enjoying. Only drawback is knowing that Tom is no loser!

I gave this book 4 Stars because I really enjoyed it. There were some parts of the story that I found rather offensive, such as the repeated use of the "N" word. There was also stereotypical verbiage I found annoying, like the use of the word "dog" by African American men. However, other than those nauseous little peeves, the book was a very good read. The story was fast-paced, and the characters were somewhat developed and believable. I really appreciated all the twists and turns in the plot, along with the authentic "whodunit" theme. That said, good job Robert Bailey!

Papa Is a Poet: A Story About Robert Frost, by Rebecca Gibbon

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5–Bober's picture-book biography is narrated by Frost's oldest daughter, Lesley, and based upon her childhood journal. It begins with the family's return home from two years in England, where they had lived so Frost could concentrate on writing poetry instead of farming. “Papa had the courage to trust his own feelings and know what he had to do. He made a reckless choice,” says the teen, quoting the first verse of “The Road Not Taken.” As she waits with her mother and siblings in New York's Grand Central Terminal for the train to New Hampshire, her father visits the publisher of a book of his poetry that his wife saw reviewed in the New Republic. Lesley recalls her childhood at Derry Farm, where her papa raised chickens and sold their eggs; took his family on all-day Sunday picnics; and, with his wife, homeschooled the children. Reading and memorizing poetry were highly stressed in the Frost household, as was the purchase of books. (“Papa thought that any book worth reading twice was worth owning.”) Bober has captured the poet's personality, his love for family, and the inner strength that allowed him to follow his dreams. Indeed, he returns to the station with a contract for two books–the beginning of his successful writing career. An author's note offers further biographical information. Photos, quotations, a short bibliography, and a dozen of Frost's poems are appended. Charming, detailed folk-art-style watercolor paintings add to the appeal of this readable introduction to a great American poet.–Susan Scheps, formerly at Shaker Public Library, OHα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

Just off the boat after two years in England, Robert Frost’s wife and four children wait in a railway station while Papa goes to talk with his publisher. To pass the time, 15-year-old Lesley daydreams, remembering her family’s years on their New Hampshire farm and reflecting on her father’s love of reading, astronomy, and words. The writing is smooth, and the subject is well-known to Bober, who wrote the young-adult biography A Restless Spirit: The Story of Robert Frost (1991). Created with ink, colored pencil, and watercolor, Gibbon’s illustrations light up the pages with fresh, naive images portraying the family’s activities. While parts of the book are adapted from Lesley Frost’s journal, reminiscence is a relatively static framework for biographical information. The most appreciative audience will be readers who love Robert Frost’s poetry. For children unfamiliar with Frost’s work, Bober occasionally uses stanzas and short quotes from his verse within the first-person narrative and includes 12 of his poems in the back matter, along with some historical information, quotations, and a bibliography. Grades 1-3. --Carolyn Phelan

I have never outgrown my love for picture books. I have also been a lifelong lover of the poems of Robert Frost. I just couldn't resist "Papa is a Poet: A Story About Robert Frost". What a delight. I love how the author writes about the Frost family and their life on their farm. This story is "bookended" by the story of Robert Frost discovering that his poetry has been published in the U.S. after he and his family returned from living in England. The text is written in a style that is easy enough for children, but cool enough for adults. Some of Frost's most famous poems are included at the end of the book. The illustrations, which appear to be watercolors or possibly mixed media, are wonderful. I love the illustrations as much as the story. The entire book is an inspiration. Get this book for your child, or children. Also, don't be afraid to buy it for yourself. Either way, you won't regret it.

Tender insight into the man who taught at Plymouth State University long before I got there.

My husband is Papa in our family and he loves this especially , again this is my way to introduce RF to a younger generation who otherwise wouldnt know of him .. In school I don't know if they even teach poetry anymore .Its a lost art I think along with many other art forms today.. Keep the good books coming my way..thx

Interesting. I enjoyed learning more about the poet via his daughter.

Excellent story to give children a human understanding of a "real, live" poet!!

Excellent personal insight into the life of Robert Frost from a child's perspective.Great "take aways" for children for a lifetime!

I recently discovered this gem of a picture book at the library. I have always enjoyed the poems of Robert Frost, and I was intrigued to see a non-fiction picture book about his life. His life story is told from the perspective of one of his daughters named Lesley. In the author's notes she explains that she adapted much of what is in the story from Lesley's journal. Lesley's recollections of her father and their family life as told in this story are simply delightful. My favorite part is when she says, "Papa told us to reread stories we remembered with pleasure. He wanted us to enjoy books so much that we would be lonely without them. And he told us to memorize poems in order to know them by heart." This inspired me to have my son Isaac memorize one of my favorite Robert Frost poems, "Nothing Gold Can Stay." The illustrations in the book are stellar and they recreate beautiful snapshots of Robert Frost's life--my favorite is the one where he is bringing his wife a bouquet of flowers. As a nice bonus, the last few pages of the book include quotes from Robert frost and some of his best known poems such as "The Road Not Taken."

Here is an engaging reminiscence of a young chicken farmer, a family man, who was a poet deep in his soul. The tale is related by Robert Frost’s oldest daughter and gives a gentle slice of family life, interspersed with lines of poetry. Twelve poems are included in the back of the book for further reading. Also presented is an author’s note to further clarify biological details for students writing reports. Quotations and photographs with captions will pique a reader’s interest. The colorful illustrations, fine in detail and resembling Americana Folk Art make this book a joy to peruse.
