I was a social worker who saw things that were unbelievable, and if we had had more Maggies and Caroles, the system would work like it was meant to.I liked her positive attitude and the fact that she works for the children and not just for herself.I would recommend this book to all social service personnel. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys just reading.Maggie, you are special!!

I love this author and all of her true story accounts of foster caring for children who have come from the worst kind of living environments. It’s heartbreaking to hear the trauma these poor kids are put through, however, it’s people like Maggie who show you how love and structure can truly make a difference. All of Maggie’s books are so interesting and emotional, you can’t put them down! Thank you, Maggie, for the kind heart of yours in fostering for over 20 years. You are an amazing woman.

Have you ever had a horrible nightmare from which you thought you wouldn’t be awakened from? A nightmare so bad that you felt deep consternation even after waking up from it. Quite glad did you become when realization came to you that it was just a dream - now you were in your warm bed, and you are safe. This book is the story of Ernest Shackleton and his 27 men. The difference between your nightmare and theirs is that there was no awakening for them- theirs was real. They lost their ship during Antarctic expedition, named "Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition."Before the expedition, Shackleton named the ship "Endurance" from his family motto, "Fortitudine vincimus" (By endurance we conquer). Very interesting is it to know the crew survived between the wreckage of their ship, Endurance, and their rescue only though tough endurance, so shows their story from this book. The author of this book, Alfred Lansing, was a journalist all his life. He has done a great job at compiling official sail records, each crew's journal, background world’s history, personal interviews, ship's manufacture features, and all the information relevant to Endurance and expedition. Through this book will you gain many new perspectives in respect to this expedition, if you already knew their story. If you didn’t know about them, while reading this book, you will feel as though you are their stowaway crew member, having survived along with them on their unexpected 17-month-long journey and be awed at how so did theyAt times, I slowed down and carefully read with wrinkles between my eyes with much concern for the crew members' well-being. I was worried something horrific might come upon the crew when they run out of food, water; some fell off the boat; many had frostbite; and one had gangrene on his toes from severe frostbite. At other times, I burst out laughing loudly at funny jokes that they made each other, and positive mindset, despite their grim ordeal.Shackleton's leadership could be a matter of interest to you. He showed countless courageous leadership decisions and sacrifices for his crew throughout the journey. Had it not been for his innate leadership, I am certain the rest of 27 men would not have seen their family ever again. On voyage, they would toast by saying "For our wives and children. May they never meet." Then did they not have a slightest inkling on how Shackleton would lead them from the grasp of death in the coming months.

What a page turner. Lansing is a master for the description of those explorers hardships, desire to follow Shacketon' orders. I kept saying to myself that there are few humans today that are as tough as those men. I recommend this book to add to the collection of those books that give us the knowledge of what it takes to conquer a goal.

Purchase the hardcover 100th anniversary edition, that was just published.The actual photographs of the Endurance stuck in the ice are worth the price of the new edition. I have read this book several times overthe years and it never fails to excite.

I do not want to say anything that might diminish this incredible story or the heroism of all the men involved. But, this should have been a short story and not a full blown novel. There is not one moment of levity in the entire book. It is simply tension at a high level for page after page after page. There is only so much snow, ice, freezing water, freezing temperatures, waves, ice pack, ice pressure, wind, hopeless, etc., etc., etc. that a person can take. After a while it all becomes somewhat of a blur and is boring, especially when you know how the story ends. I only wanted to finish the book and move on to something more interesting. If that kind of book is what you are looking for, then you will love this book. It really is an incredible story and it is a story well told.

In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton set out on an expedition to make the first land crossing of the barren Antarctic continent from the east to the west coast. The expedition failed to accomplish its objective, but became recognized instead as an amazing feat of endurance. Shackleton and a crew of 27 (plus one stowaway) first headed to the Weddell Sea on the ship Endurance. Their ship was trapped by pack ice short of their destination and eventually crushed. Forced to abandon ship, the men were trapped on ice floes for months while they drifted north. Once they were far enough north that the ice thinned somewhat, they were forced to journey in lifeboats they'd dragged off the ship. After six terrible days, they made it to uninhabited Elephant Island; from there Shackleton and five other men set off in an open 22-foot boat on an incredible 800-mile voyage across the notoriously tempestuous Drake Passage to South Georgia Island, where they hiked across the island’s mountain range to reach a whaling camp. From there, they returned in a ship to rescue the men left behind on Elephant Island.That these men were able to survive in the harsh, barren conditions of Antarctica, where temperatures frequently fell below zero is amazing. It’s nearly unimaginable that these men could survive for almost two years, their lives marked by a seemingly endless stretch of misery, suffering, and boredom, not to mention the threat of starvation. At every turn, their situation seems to go from bad to worse. If this were a work of fiction, one would be inclined to claim the story was simply too far-fetched. But Endurance isn't just a tale of misery, it is a vivid description of their journey, the dangers they faced, and the obstacles they overcame. Through all of this, Shackleton has never lost a man.Alfred Lansing's book, written in 1958 from interviews and journals of the survivors, is now back in print. It’s a riveting tale of adventure, survival and hope. It is also a rare historical, non-fiction book that is as exciting as any novel. She fell in love with Owen, with Elysabeth Victoria Mortimer, and the mysterious magical land of Ceredigion.The mother travelled with Owen and his friends through many journeys, laughing and crying as the story called for her to do, until the story seemingly came to a happy ending in The King's Traitor. She was content to let the story go, but Mr. Wheeler wasn't. Trolling Facebook one day, the mother happened upon a notification from Mr. Wheeler that he had, indeed, written another tale. Convinced that it could not possibly be as good as the original stories, the mother asked for an advance copy. She patiently finished the book that she was reading then proceeded to read The Hollow Crown... and promptly began ignoring her children and thirsting for the next installment.The Hollow Crown is a clever and skillful weaving of the War of the Roses with Arthurian legend with the added thread of St. Joan's story. Honestly, it's a beautiful tale. Ceredigion reminds me of Narnia, and I just want to go there, let my mind rest, and follow the words of the Fountain. I wasn't so fond of The Maid's War, but The Hollow Crown wiped that all away. I see why Mr. Wheeler needed to write that tale down. It's an integral part of the overall story, in spite of being a stand-alone novel. The Hollow Crown is an achievement. I'm very much looking forward to the rest of the series. Outstanding work, Mr. Wheeler!I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

I don't know why, but sometimes I tend to put off reading books that I know are PG rated. I get it into my head that they won't excite me or hold my interest like something grittier would. And then I pick up one of Jeff Wheeler's books and I remember why I keep buying Jeff Wheeler's books. Because his characters are flawed but they persevere; because there is drama without melodrama; because he deftly includes gut-wrenching events without resorting to Tarantino-like gore and language. Yes, he writes clean and wholesome stories, but they are heart-pounding, tear-jerking, I-gotta-read-more stories that never leave me sorry that I picked up the book.If you're looking for something for your children to read, the Kingfountain series would be great for ages 8 and up. Younger children might enjoy it as well, although I would suggest that you read it to younger children, as there may be subtleties or elements they won't pick up on without an adult to explain. Your tweens and teens will enjoy the series as well, and so will you.

Well he's gone and done it again! Taking me out of this realm of reality and swept me away on to another time and place which is wonderful in my book. Jeff Wheeler just has a knack for the finest storytelling of a complete other world with kings and lords and ladies and palaces. Let's not forget the magic, intrigue and courtly behavior. This story revolves around Trynne a daughter of Owen from one of the earlier books, and she is coming into her own and she is meant to become a Wizr like her mom, but, she is a lot like her dad. But there is more to it as well remember Magic! If you're going to read this I do recommend that you read the previous 3 because a lot of things tie in to this story and you may not get who or what the characters are speaking of. I highly recommend this for anyone of any age. Thanks go to Jeff Wheeler for sharing your heart and soul with us on this journey, I anxiously await the next one.

"I wrote in my note at the end of The King's Traitor that I thought the children of these main characters needed a turn on the stage."I was both excited and hesitant when I found out the Kingfountain series had another installment. It is exceptionally hard (or perhaps I'm just exceptionally picky?) to pull off a series that picks up a generation later, shifting the focus to the children of the characters you love while still maintaining the integrity of the original characters in the recent iteration. Too often I find they turn into paper parents - two dimensional characters I no longer know that are just...there.But boy howdy, was I ever pleasantly surprised that Jeff Wheeler pulled it off and pulled it off well. While The Hollow Crown is considered the fourth book of the Kingfountain series, I consider this book to be the first in a connected trilogy.The Hollow Crown opens up to introduce Trynne (Owen's daughter) and Fallon (Elyse's son). They've been raised fairly close despite being part of different households because of their parent's friendship. The way they pick on each other instantly reminds me of the saying about adolescent boys, "If he's picking on you it means he likes you."(I'd be lying if I didn't say this made me a little giddy because while I obviously wasn't able to have Owen+Elyse, maybe I could have that with their children. But I'm getting off track.)Trynne embodies everything I love about strong female leads. She's suffocating under the yoke of her mother's expectations to become a Wizr. Being a good daughter, she truly tries...but her heart lies not in studying books and magic but in battle and strategy. Despite the pressures she faces both by familial duties and societal expectations, she relentlessly pursues her dreams.Her dreams become reality when she secretly becomes an Oath Maiden, sworn to serve the Fountain and protect the king. By FAR, the best book in his Great Lives series. I've read them all several times. The reason Moses is the best, is the lessons, insights, and life applications that Chuck draws out of a story that you've likely heard and read several times. If you haven't read this book, I would highly recommend it, although any of the Great Lives books are good to revisit for personal study, sermons, or Bible study material.My favorite part was Chapter 5: "The Desert: School of Self-Discovery." In this chapter, Chuck highlights how we all go through desert seasons where God seeks to train us up, similar to Moses 40 years in the wilderness of Midian and Mt. Sinai. Chuck endearingly calls this God's "Wilderness University" or "Desert University," and describes the 4 "majors" that God provides in his curriculum, as he trains up a man or woman of God. Chuck reuses these themes in ALL of his Great Lives series and applies them to David, Elijah, Esther, etc.The following "majors" or life lessons are:1) Obscurity- God uses obscurity to break down our pride/ego, remove our desire to "be in the limelight," and to be humble/willing to be used by Him2) Time/Waiting- God uses time to grow our patience and reliance on Him3) Solitude- God uses solitude, to give us time to reflect, remove busyness from our lives, and to develop our ability to stand for God, even when the "crowd" or others don't.4) Discomfort- God uses discomfort to develop our ability to tolerate hardship and "be content in all things" as Paul says in the New Testament.

I was interested in learning more about King David, but wanted something more like a "novel," than a heavy in-depth biography. I never seemed to find anything like that, but went with this one because of the author's reputation. Swindoll provides an entertaining account of the events in David's life, using scripture and also lively contemporary language. What I did not expect, but have enjoyed, is that he also draws parallels between David's actions and other Bible events, and also applies to modern life some lessons to be learned from David. I have found these digressions from a "just the facts, ma'am" approach to be interesting and, in some cases, thought-provoking. If, however, a reader would prefer a book that is strictly a biographical account of David's life, this may not be the best choice. I gave it 4 stars because occasionally the author gets a bit too preachy.

I've always admired Dr. Chuck Swindoll's radio ministry, as I believe he preaches the unadulterated Word of God. His Insights For Living are lessons I have carefully listened to and tried to apply to my own life. A while back, I recall him doing a series of radio programs on the life of King David, and I believe those programs resulted in him writing this book.I heartily recommend this book to those who desire a study of King David and his life and times. Swindoll takes his information directly from Kings and Chronicles, and considers the life of David from when he was a young boy tending his father's sheep, to an old man of 70, about to die. Swindoll tells King David's story and the lessons Christians can learn from the most written about person in the entire Old Testament. Swindoll is a list-maker, and in each chapter he provides a list of key ideas or lessons to be learned by King David's attitude or actions that are applicable to believers today. For example, what kind of mindset is required to face down a giant challenge, such as a Goliath? What does it mean to be "A man after God's own heart?" How can a man of faith commit adultery and then have a man murdered in order to steal his wife? What should our response be with our children rebel against us? These and many more questions are asked and answered in Swindoll's book.I am using this book as a nightly Bible study and I can hardly wait to get to bed to read another chapter. I have enjoyed this book so much that I will likely purchase the next book in his series on Biblical characters.I knew very little about King David before beginning this study, and as I come to the conlcusion of the book, I feel I know the general outlicne of David's life so much better, and have improved insights into his personality, his struggles, his moral failings, and his faith in his God. David's life is one of great contrasts. Since he is the most written about person in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit must want us to learn about this Man of God, and learn how he failed and how he suceeded in his walk of faith.This is not a difficult book to read. Swindoll writes for the average reader, yet has insights and clarity that will benefit the church deacon or pastor. I most highly recommend this book as a great starting point to learn about the greatest King of Israel.konedog

Bought this book because I needed some more fluid info on David, more chronological for the retreat I was about to speak at. Wow! Every chapter ministered to my soul and spoke to me in such deep ways. You can almost read this like a devotional because swindoll puts little nuggets in every chapter that will challenge you in deep ways. This book is a keeper. You won't be seeing mine resold on amazon!

My parents named me "David" so I wanted to learn more about the life of the one God chose who was named David. It was a great book; good reading and well organized. Lots of scripture was used to describe David's life. I will probably buy some more in Chuck Swindoll's Bible character series.

From my earliest days of accepting Christ, I have loved Chuck Swindoll. His writing is so clear and the everyday application so practical. This book was no exception. Examining the life of David with application from every period of his life allowed me to feel that God can use anyone to accomplish his purposes.

I ordered this book, after sitting in for the Admin at church. There I read the first 3 chapters and was hooked. Swindoll writes as if he is talking with you in common, every day language so it is easy to understand and a joy to read the story. I love it so much that I ordered one for my Aunt to read with me. So, if you're looking for something great to read and love the Bible story of David, I'd say give this one a try.
