Boy Who Lived With Bears and Other Iroquois Stories, by Joseph Bruchac

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4?An appealing collection of six traditional Iroquois tales retold in classic storytelling language. Although these stories can be found in other anthologies, including Bruchac's Iroquois Stories (Crossing, 1985), they are gathered here for younger children and presented as lessons the tribal elders might pass on during winter story times. The reteller's introduction is instructive and sets the mood for these humorous, moral?but never didactic?tales. Each one is carefully crafted with precise language and striking images. The title story tells adults to love their children; "How Birds Got Their Feathers" warns readers to be satisfied with what they have; "Chipmunk and Bear" cautions against making fun of others. Jacob's stunning, brilliantly colored paintings, one for each selection, capture the moods clearly and gracefully. A beautiful book in words and pictures that deserves a spot in every folktale collection.?Beth Tegart, Oneida City Schools, NYCopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 4^-6. An orphan abused by his guardian uncle finds refuge as a member of a bear family in the title story of this collection of six Iroquois teaching tales, which spring from Bruchac's close association with Iroquois elders and are sourced in tales he heard while growing up. An introduction that doesn't overwhelm puts the tales into historical and cultural context. Bruchac's style is clean and spare. His direct, immediate language makes the book accessible to a wide range of children, including reluctant and new readers, and the humor and inherent drama make the tales ideal for reading and telling aloud. The seven full-page color paintings by Murv Jacob are brightly framed with floral and other patterns that enhance the vibrant compositions, and, whether animal or human, the characters are nicely individualized and energetically executed. A gray flowered border surrounds each page of text, the type is large, the design is spacious, and the detailing is attractive. This is a fine example of good book-making, which combines quality of content with quality of craft. Janice Del Negro

Review

Praise for Acts of GodActs of God offers practical, biblical answers for life's toughest questions. With a seasoned pastor's heart and a masterful grasp of Scripture, Bob Russell guides us through the life of Joseph, adding here-and-now stories to bring each point home. I was moved, challenged, encouraged, and convicted. No pat answers or Christian cliches here: Acts of God speaks the truth, wrapped in God's mercy and love.Liz Curtis Higgs, bestselling author of Bad Girls of the Bible and The Girl's Still Got ItI never refuse an opportunity to read the words of Bob Russell. He is a humble, wise and gifted teacher. I receive this book with great excitement!Max Lucado, pastor and New York Times bestselling authorBob Russell is simply one of the most gifted, faithful, and amazing pastors I have ever known. This book is just one example of what has made him such an effective preacher, teacher, and guide: he knows how to bring the Bible into everyday life, and in this book he brilliantly does so through the example of Joseph. This book will be of great assistance to every Christian at every stage of life because it is established in eternal truth and in its enduring power. Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Bob Russell was our pastor for eight years. Everything we admired most about him is evident in this book. It is honest: the difficult questions of life are faced head-on without sentimentality or fluff. It is biblical: godly wisdom leaps from every page. It is practical: Russell offers concrete advice to help us overcome temptation and endure testing. It is hopeful: I finished the book with tears of praise and gratitude for a God who is faithful, who loves us and who will never let us go. Rebecca Manley Pippert, author of Out of the Saltshaker and Love Has its Reasons Trusting God through every situation and season in life is a difficulty we all face. How are we to know how and why God acts when we don’t understand? Bob Russell takes on the toughest of these challenges with wisdom and grace, and offers a clear perspective for finding a lasting faith. This is a great book! Jack Graham, Pastor, Prestonwood Bible Church, DallasTragedy strikes each and every one of us. And we have ALL questioned God at times. So this book is for everyone you’ve ever met or will meet . . . and for you. There’s no one I trust more to bring God’s Word to life in a practical way than Bob Russell.Dave Stone, Senior Pastor, Southeast Christian ChurchThe problem of human suffering presents one of the great challenges to faith. It is as old as Job and has been asked throughout every generation. Bob Russell tackles the question head-on, drawing upon his pastoral experience, his knowledge of the Scriptures, his familiarity with other writers conversant with the issue, and his own personal encounters with unjustifiable suffering. The book provides a valuable resource for personal study and reflection as well as group discussion.Dr. Gary Weedman, President, Johnson University In this honest and readable meditation on some of life’s most difficult and enduring questions, Bob Russell teaches us how to see beyond suffering to God’s purpose and plan for each of us. Based on a lifetime of study, prayer, and personal reflection, Acts of God will deepen the faith of all who read it. Over the years, I have benefited from the wisdom and counsel of Bob Russell. With this book, many more will find reason to be grateful for his practical approach to a great trust in God. Hon. Mitch McConnell, Republican Leader, United States SenateIn the midst of Acts of God, you need someone to stand with you with a heart after God. There are few I'd trust my hurting heart more to than Bob Russell. Profoundly wise, deeply biblical and always gentle, Bob Russell is a man who writes with a heart of a pastor--and the healing love of his Savior.Ann Voskamp, author of the New York Times bestseller One Thousand GiftsBob Russell has a unique way of illustrating how biblical truth intersects with human need. In Acts of God, Bob shows how God’s hand was at work throughout the life of Joseph amid the prideful immaturity and alluring enticements of youth, the pain of rejection and unjust suffering, the subtle temptations of power and success, and the sobering realities of aging and preparing for death. I will use this book as a reference for my own teaching and preaching, and I will recommend it to others who face painful situations that make them wonder about the goodness of God.Dr. David Faust, President at Cincinnati Christian University and author of Married for Good Life and business throw us some high hard ones. Bob Russell brings a commonsense perspective on how to persevere and even triumph in the toughest trials. Every successful business has a plan and this book will help us all understand God has a master plan for our lives.David Novak, CEO of YUM! and author of Taking People With You

From the Back Cover

“Sooner or later, just like the rest of us, you’ll ask The Question:‘Why, God? Why did You let this happen?’”Bob Russell has seen it all. From a tragedy in his childhood church, to broken families among those he has loved as a pastor, to a world torn by war and injustice. Why? But he thinks we’re asking the wrong question. Rather, we should be asking Who? Who is God, and what is He doing as our hearts are hurting? With compassion and wisdom, Bob Russell helps you turn your Why? into Who?—and lead you to the God who can be trusted.

I gave this four stars because, to me, it's good but not great. To be sure, my expectations concerning a treatment of theodicy and the goals of this book may not coincide.I was searching for an answer to the question, why is God silent or inactive when mean people attack the innocent. Maybe a little of that near the end of the book. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the way he weaved a study of Joseph into every chapter, and I got some great ideas from that, BUT, there are those in church who struggle with the issue of the innocent suffering and I cannot suggest this book as a resource.

One of the best books I've ever read. My husband has cancer and has suffered so greatly, this book has given us much needed wisdom which strengthens us. I will keep this book and re-read it always. Sometimes truth is hard to swallow but non the less it is truth and with that a Peace follows. Thank you Bob Russell.

There is so much pain because every action has a reaction. My 14 year old son was killed by an automobile . He was in the highway at a spot which the driver did not see in time to stop. My question, or perhaps my dilemma is 'can God's presence bring solace in the agony of the loss of my son?' And the answer for me is 'yes'. He does not ask me not to grieve, but holds me close to His heart as I grieve. This book leads me through the history of God's faithful action through thousands of years of His continual presence in both tragedy and triumph. Thank you Pastor Russell for your testimony.

We did the study based on the movie and book "Acts of God" in our men's bible study group. The analogies based on the story of Joseph hit some major struggles of trials we endure in the modern day. Highly recommend the book and the study. The movie is very moving and well worth watching.

Great book with good material for small group discussion. Lots of deep quesiton discussion and the way it uses the life of Joseph to parallel is solid! NOTE: I wouldn't use the Travelers guide with it. It is really confusing and hard to follow. .

Acts of God is a book about suffering and answers a big question: why do some things happen/why would God allow this? I would recommend watching the movie and reading this book.

Enjoyed this book thoroughly; really gave me a clear perspective on God's love for us.

I liked the movie better than the book

After you have spent 8-80 hours trying random combo's on the Server Configuration panel trying to guess what you should do, buy this book and score a direct hit! Microsoft should bundle this book with SQL Server. If a little more detail were provided on the internal data structures of SQL Server one could write a bulk loader that bypassed SQL Server entirely (I know its been done by others) and load 10 X as fast. (hint-hint) This is the closest thing to a K&R for MS SQL Server I've ever seen. I really like the brevity of this book. Every word counts! Very, very good job Ken!

England really hits the mark with this one. He logically informs the reader of how SQL Server stores data and thinks, and then lets you know how to make it think smarter. I used his techniques, and they work! He presents the info in a clear and concise manner, making this one a quick, but essential read.

Had response problems with current database setup and SQL statements. The chapters on Indexing and Optimizing really work. Ex. A simple query on two tables took 2.5 minutes. After applying some of the suggestions, the query took a little over 2 seconds...

I went into this book with no expectations, but hopes for a fun book with a romance I could ship. I got all that and more! This book was sweet and charming and proves that sometimes winning is about more than what happens on the ice.Despite barely being able to remain upright while ice skating, I've always been more than a little obsessed with the sport. From watching it religiously during the season to watching my favorite ice skating movie – The Cutting Edge (Which I saw in the theater as a child. Yes, I'm dating myself.) – I love all things ice skating. I'd had my eye on Jennifer's earlier series, Edge, for quite awhile, but just never got around to reading it. When the opportunity presented itself to review an audiobook copy of the first book in her new season, I jumped at the chance. I'm so glad I did, too, because I enjoyed every minute of it.Courtney was easy to relate to and like. She was sweet and dedicated to her sport. She seemed a little younger than the early-20s I have to guess she is, but I didn't find that to be an issue. A lot of times, when kids are in a competitive sport like ice skating, they're pretty sheltered to the rest of the world, so it wasn't all that unheard of for them to come off as younger than they are. I never particularly cared for Courtney's partner, Mark. He was just a little too self-centered for my liking. He wasn't a bad guy, but he couldn't hold a candle to Josh. (NOT that there was a love triangle in this book. There wasn't.) Josh was quiet, shy and charming. The exact opposite of his snobby sister Stephanie. The romance in this book was super sweet. I loved the pace at which things developed between Courtney and Josh. There's something adorable about a first love like this and I was completely addicted to it. Courtney and Josh had a ton of chemistry and a lot of similar interests, but they had to be cautious to hide their friendship, and then more, from the other people in their lives. There was a lot going on with the competition, the coaches and Josh's family. What they had was just for them. In addition to a lot of smiles and laughs, I definitely got a little teary-eyed during this book. The narrator, Emily Stokes, was perfect for Courtney's character. Her sweet voice, and they way she was wrapped up in the story, made it even better for me. I actually looked forward to being stuck in (some) traffic so I could spend more time listening to her. Her pacing was great. I didn't love all of the voices she used, but when she was voicing Courtney, I was hooked. There were some odd pauses in the audiobook, particularly at the end of chapters, but I didn't find them all that bothersome. The first time it happened, I was taken by surprise. I thought my iPhone had frozen or something. But I soon learned it was just part of the book. Overall, I thought Crossing the Ice was an enjoyable audiobook.I'm excited about how this story started out and I will definitely keep reading to see what happens next, especially after finishing the bonus epilogue! I'm also planning to go back and read the Edge series. I might know how everything turned out for Em and Sergei, but I feel compelled to get the whole story now.I received an audiobook copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

When I read a Jennifer Comeaux book I know that I can count on reading a sweet romance, and that was definitely the case here. I loved reading about Courtney now that she’s all grown up. Courtney first appears as a minor character in Jennifer’s first series, though you don’t have to read those books to understand Crossing the Ice. Courtney and her skating partner Mark want nothing more than to go to the Olympics, so it’s incredibly problematic when their rivals (Josh and his sister Stephanie) come to skate at the same rink, under the same coaches. Of course it’s even more problematic when Courtney enjoys Josh’s company much more than she’s willing to admit.Courtney and Josh are very sweet together. I liked that Josh is the shy guy, hanging back and being friends with Courtney at first, despite his feelings for her. It fit with his character so completely. His inaction when it came to the relationship and his life choices wasn’t always appealing, but it was so completely him. Courtney, on the other hand, is more of a “go getter”, willing to fight for what she wants. The two of them have some very sweet scenes together, and I loved where they ended up.As always, the skating parts of the book were so well done. I honestly don’t know much about skating at all, but reading about the sport through Jennifer’s writing makes it jump off the page so that you can almost picture the routines in your head. Jennifer also excels at making readers feel what her characters feel. You celebrate with them, and so too you feel their disappointments.Crossing the Ice is a great story full of characters who I'd love to read more about. If you're looking for a cleaner New Adult read that focuses on the characters lives and choices just as much as it does the romance, I would suggest you pick this book up. Crossing the Ice is a sporty, sweet romance that I would not hesitate to recommend.

Jennifer Comeaux delivers another sweet romance with Crossing the Ice. This book, a spin-off from her Edge series, has all the familiar traits of Comeaux's writing. Mainly, intense attraction between two characters whose chemistry is as real as the air we breathe. I read, my stomach a-flutter, as they bantered, flirted, and fell in love with each other, despite overwhelming obstacles that would keep any couple apart. This is what I love about Comeaux's stories.Courtney played a small part in the Edge series. We got a glimpse into the lives her and Mark, pairs partners, in that series, where they were both young teens training with the dream of Olympic gold in their hearts. Now they're all grown up, and they're sharing their famous coaching team with US rivals Josh and Stephanie. There are only two spots for US pairs skaters to go to the Olympics, yet there are three pairs all vying for those coveted spots. One team is basically a shoe in, which leaves the other two teams fighting for that last spot. Sharing a rink and coaches makes things interesting, to say the least, but nothing compares to the intensity of this forbidden romance when Court falls in love with the guy from the rival team! And maybe that's why I love Comeaux's stories so much, despite the lack of steam I'm used to reading in other books. Don't get me wrong--there's steam, but it's not explicit. It's no less enjoyable though, because she knows how to twist your heart, heat up your insides, and plant your ass on the edge of your seat with a deliciously forbidden romance. Will they or won't they get caught in the act? And if they do, how bad will the s*** hit the fan?I highly recommend this series! Though Crossing the Ice can be read as a stand-alone, I'd begin with Life on the Edge, the first in the Edge series, so you'll get the full impact of this fierce and competitive world of figure skating the author has created.
