I can happily say I enjoyed the content in this book very much. Never have I ever read a poetry book so raw, so dark, and so much feeling put into it. I read it in one sitting too! I had this book for a while, but have been putting it off. I searched for a poetry book that did not involve the topic of love at all because it is so mainstream and cliche to me. However, this book is so much more than that. I’m glad I read it. I hope for all you readers out there searching for a good poetry book chose Bare Roots as one of your listings :)
even from the "dear reader" section I knew this book was going to be powerful. I want to thank the author for being brave enough to share her story with us in such an empowering and beautiful way. this is an absolutely stunning collection. (please know that this collection does cover serious/heavy topics so please be careful!)
Very brave of the author to share and I commend her journey through the healing process. The writing style and subject matter, however, did not resonate with me. Essentially, if you can’t relate to stories of rape, sexual abuse and haunting mental illness, this book probably won’t strike many chords with you. (That is, of course, a blessing.)With that said, this book itself may be a blessing to those who CAN realte, so I left it in a nightstand at a hotel - next to the bible - in hopes that it may find someone who needs it more than I do.
It takes balls to tell her story! There are so many people out here in this world who don't know how to allow themselves the same space to develop a voice around such painful experiences either because it "triggers" others or because like she has mentioned in her poetry people find it easier to forget than to deal with how they feel. Either way, regardless of our intent, we end up passing on the wound by not talking about it. I can totally relate to this author and I have to say it has inspired me to tell my own story because things like rape and mental illness have multiple voices who deal with their healing differently.
Molly S. Hillery has a way with words. Even if you can't relate, it is still very inspiring. And for the readers who can relate, it gives you a sense of relief that you are not alone but you are also able to feel for the author
This collection is really amazing, it talks about a lot of deep rooted issues and trauma very elegantly while keeping the flow. It’s a very powerful collection and although there are lighter, more generic insta peices isn’t his collection there are a lot of heavier ones, I think the variety is amazing and helps get the points across well. Overall this is phenomenal if you’re looking for a work of modern poetry that’s not as “instaâ€.
This book is BEAUTIFUL and gripping in its authenticity, genuineness, and raw emotion. I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. I cannot recommend this book more. I can't wait to see what more Molly will write in the future :).
this has got to be the best, most heart wrenching poetry book ive ever read. i had to put sticky notes on the pages i wanted to go back to and read and there were a ton. beautifully written, and good for people who have been through trauma, depression and anxiety.
