Almost sixty years ago, I entered the Graduate School at the University of Pennsylvania to study for a Ph.D. in chemistry. There I had the opportunity to be a Lecture Demonstrator for an old-fashioned professor who believed that the basis for introductory chemistry courses be directed towards "descriptive chemistry" which was rapidly becoming out of vogue. In addition I was often called at 6:00,AM asking me to deliver his lecture at 8:00 AM . II learned more chemistry then than in any class I had taken before or since. Therefore Uncle Tungsten was pleasant visit down memory lane.I can understand why the casual reader would object to the detail that Dr. Sachs uses in his narrative. I probably requires some insight into the history of experimental science to appreciate the story. I am fortunate in having such knowledge and thoroughly enjoyed the book.. It is not a book that can be understood by many without a science background. I giver the book five stars for my own selfish reasons.

I used to have a copy of this book, lent it out, so just recently purchased the paperback version, and am about halfway through it (having read it several times in bygone days). I just love this book because of the way Dr. Sacks is so enthusiastic about all the things he comes across in daily life and learning when growing up. He had many mentors, both inside and outside of his family, and they seemed to know how to pique his interest. I didn't know much about chemicals before reading this book, and can't say I retain a lot of the chemical experiments that were done, but it was the sheer pleasure he received while learning, and passing it on to us, the readers that impresses me so much. This is one book I really enjoy sharing with friends, especially those with children.

I have always enjoyed reading Oliver Sacks' books. I especially thought "Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a Chemical Boyhood" to be most engaging and interesting. The book is an elegantly written autobiography with remarkably vivid accounts of Sacks' early formative years, describing in historical detail his fascination with chemistry, numbers and natural history-subjects which revealed to him that there existed some kind of a natural order in the universe. This idea of a natural order became an obsession which he pursued with great passion, a kind of outlet to escape from the chaos of the war and it's aftermath. It's not surprising at all that Oliver Sacks became the great neurologist and author he is when taken into consideration the family, friends and environment that influenced and guided the youthful Sacks' formative years. An amazing read! Recommed it to anyone who likes Oliver Sacks and/or the history of science.

Someone said that if the sorcerer's apprentice were to write a memoir, it would be like this. There is some mention of childhood traumas, but this recollection also shows the healing power of love &, mostly, the wonder & delight found in exploring the nature of reality. Magic may be science we don't understand, but learning how it works doesn't make it less amazing, only more so, & opens up new depths of mystery. I started this book not much interested in chemistry, though a fan of Oliver Sacks, but ended it cock-eyed with the sense of perfectly natural processes going on around & within us & what Sacks called "the key to the universe".

I have long been an Oliver Sacks fangirl, since reading his inimitable "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" years ago when it first came out. I don't know how I missed knowing about this book till now, 9 years after it came out. In reading all of Sacks's books, I have always felt that not only was Sacks telling me a lot about oddities of the medical world, but also implicitly, quite a lot about the oddity of his own personality. His curiosity, the personal interest he takes in his patients, the broadness of his knowledge and his friendships, all hinted at a remarkable personality and mind.In this book, the origin of his amazing mind becomes more explicit. First of all, he was born into what must be a most remarkable family. In the 1940s, both his father and mother were practicing physicians and his many aunts and uncles were all involved deeply in science. They also provided him with an amazing amount of encouragement and freedom. When as a boy of 8 or 9 he developed a passion for chemistry, his family was able to allow him to set up an actual lab in his house, and to provide him the time, freedom and resources to re-live much of the development of chemistry for himself. Not only chemistry, but they arranged for an amazing array of experiences--he dissected the body of a young girl when he was but 14, his mother would bring home fetuses from stillbirths, he was treated as an adult with serious interests. The whole story induced in me a sort of nostalgia for the freedoms of childhood which have pretty much vanished in the modern world. He himself notes that when, after 6 or more years of independent exploration of the world of chemistry, he finally was taught chemistry in the classroom, he found it dull and uninspiring. Our kids today have so little opportunity to touch and taste and smell life. They are so bound by tests and safety regulations and our own fears.I found the book a revelation of the development of a gifted mind. His sensual enthusiasm for science, his broad reading in literature and even philosophy and history while still a boy, seem remarkable to me. I can see this book being given to a young person who has an interest in science, to spark a new way of looking at science, not as a collection of known facts, but as a narrative of human beings obsessed with understanding, groping their way towards knowledge.I have long had an interest in the lives of medical researchers, who worked with a passion to understand dreadful diseases, but this is the first time I ever had a hint that chemistry was a story about people, that the knowledge of this subject also has a romance to it.There were a few places where I skimmed past some of the more technical explanations. But what a wonderful introduction this would be to the study of chemistry for a young person. I loved it.

The Classic Pin-Up Art of Jack Cole

Review

“Classic pin-ups from a giant of the comics field.... Jack Cole was a masterful comic book artist who helped define the golden age of his art form.” - The Village Voice“The 100 pages’ worth of cartoons of comely, curvy cuties come culled from low-rent men’s digest magazines of the 1940s and 1950s ― now-forgotten rags with happy-go-lucky names like Romp, Joker and Laugh Riot. But Cole’s contributions are visually indelible.” - Rod Lott, Bookgasm“The top pin-up cartoonist of his generation.” - Forum“A saucy joy.” - The List“Cole was a leading figure of mid-20th-century popular culture.” - Terry England

This is the softcover version of the same (ALMOST!) hardcover book released by Fantagraphics in 2004 (if memory serves me correctly). There is VERY little difference in the two versions, each having ALMOST all of the same cartoons, in ALMOST the same order. I probably wouldn't have bought the softcover if the product description had disclosed this fact. BUT, since it was so cheap, I'll just gift it to a friend. They changed the cover, but left the title the same. Fantagraphics just trying to sell more books?? Or, just an "oversight" by the folks here on Amazon? Either way, IF you already have the hardcover version, save your $$$$. BUT, if you don't, by all means purchase this great book. It's a real gem for the price! On another note, I wish Fantagraphics would give Cole a similar treatment as they did for Gahan Wilson by publishing ALL of his output for Playboy (in an absolutely amazing 3-volume set). Now THAT would be something to own, ALL of Cole's cartoons that appeared in Playboy in one deluxe volume!!! (Hint, Hint, Fantagraphics!!)

Great Cartoon's & Humor, with a sexy twist. No PC here---just real humor and fun---right out of the pages of Playboy and other Men's magazines before they decided being a man wasn't enough.

Another look at the infamous artist of Plastic Man and other features. I've read a lot about Jack Cole over the years, and I was thrilled to see this release. The man's a master artist, and it's a great look at some of his more hard-to-find work.

Great work but wish all the astonishing color works were in this volume. They all need to be collected. This is a nice start though.

Jack Cole was the most under rated pin up artist. He is my favorite and I'm in total love with all his drawings.

I personally loved this book. I am a huge Jack Cole fan and enjoyed all of the gags in the book.If you are a fan if gag cartoons, don't pass this up.

Fans of Jack Cole's Plastic Man should do themselves a favor and seek this book out. These one-panel gags foreshadow the work Cole would do for Playboy in the 1950's. The line art, is of course, extraordinary but his experiments with ink wash really leap off the page. Cole's gals are breathtaking. As Art Speigelman noted, "Cole's goddesses were estrogen souffles who mesmerized the ineffectual saps who lusted after them." I admit that I too was mesmerized flipping through the pages of this book. The gags are sometimes weak but Cole himself admitted that after having drawn comic books for so long he had to re-learn the art of the one-panel gag. Fortunately, this period drawing gags for the Humorama line helped him develop the talent needed to become Playboy's pre-eminent cartoonist in the early days. Alex Chun did a good job in condensing Cole's life down to a few pages. Which means more room for Cole's art!A few things to note. The book says Quality Comics later became DC Comics, however, when Quality folded they were actually purchased by DC and absorbed into their line-up. The editorial review above states that Playboy was Cole's last professional gig before his untimely death but in actuality he created the syndicated newspaper strip Betsy and Me in the final year of his life. It was being published in nearly 50 papers at the time of his death.

I wish it was in colors. Only 2 pages are printed in colors. It's sad because his color arrangement is powerful and missing in this book. Still nice to own.
