Heart of Darkness & Selections from The Congo Diary, by Joseph Conrad

From the Inside Flap

With an Introduction by Caryl PhillipsCommentary by H.L. Mencken, E.M. Forster, Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, Bertrand Russell, Lionel Trilling, Chiua Achebe, and Philip Gourevitch "Heart of Darkness," which appeared at the very beginning of our century, was a Cassandra cry announcing the end of Victorian Europe, on the verge of transforming itself into the Europe of violence," wrote the critic Czeslaw Milosz. Originally published in 1902, Heart of Darkness remains one of this century's most enduring--and harrowing--works of fiction. Written several years after Conrad's grueling sojourn in the Belgian Congo, the novel tells the story of Marlow, a seaman who undertakes his own journey into the African jungle to find the tormented white trader Kurtz. Rich in irony and spellbinding prose, Heart of Darkness is a complex meditation on colonialism, evil, and the thin line between civilization and barbarity. This edition contains selections from Conrad's Congo Diary of 1890--the first notes, in effect, for the novel which was composed at the end of that decade.Virginia Woolf wrote of Conrad, "His books are full of moments of vision. They light up a whole character in a flash. . . . He could not write badly, one feels, to save his life."

Amazon lumps different translations together as merely variations on how the book is delivered. In this case, the Hays translation is the hardcover, while the authors who translated the paperback and Kindle versions aren't specified. So use the tools available (look inside, free sample) to get an idea of the language used by the author and see if it's something you'd like to read, or if a different translation suits you better.

I am sincerely pissed that I was not provided a copy of this as a kid growing up. I have devised a work around to the whole "Not growing up with a father figure" issue. I have decided that Marcus Aurealis is my actual father, and Socrates is my great uncle and Thales is my grand father. I realize this sounds nutty to read but I honestly feel more in common with these thinkers then the absent XY chromosome donor.

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:This version:Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.George Long's version:From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

First, do we all recognize that the author of this text, Marcus Aurelius, was a Roman Emperor? If so, why have I not been forced to read this from a young age? This is quite possibly the most insightful, existential book I've ever read. Emperor Aurelius has given us wisdom in its purest form. This should be a manual for every human's life. Every sentence is mind-numbingly profound. This book is so good, that I might just have the entire text tattooed on my body. I cannot stress enough that the sagacity of this book is beyond what I have ever read. Definitely a must-read and a must-live-by.

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard, accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature.”Before I get into details, I must say that reading Meditations was one of the hardest, but most rewarding experiences in my own personal growth. The book has done so much to ferment my prior beliefs and has helped a lot to broaden my mind and encourage me to be all that I can be.It is very difficult in today’s world to believe in anything, whether it be divine beings, other people, or even ourselves. It is an epidemic that buries potential and love deep down and leaves anger and frustration to dictate life. There is no reason to feel unhappy, unfulfilled, or unappreciated , and Meditations by Marcus Aurelius offers advice to anyone who is looking for self help, self love, and a rational way of directing life. Before reading this book it is interesting to know the man that wrote it. Marcus Aurelius was the last of The Five Good Emperors of Ancient Rome. He took the title of Augustus after the death of his adopted father, Antoninus Pius, the adopted son of the late Emperor Hadrian. However Marcus Aurelius had tried to pass on the emperorship, for he prefered a much more simple philosophic lifestyle. He accepted the honor with the sole demand that Lucius Verus, his adopted brother, would share the seat with him.Sharing his seat of power is the one move that summarizes Marcus Aurelius’s entire life; the fear of power and the duty embedded in him through his interest in Stoicism, a philosophy that grounds itself on self-restraint, reason, and fate. His work is a reflection of his life, and the words inscribed in Meditations are the product of his own thoughts and his own experiences. While reading this book good feelings will begin to surface through introspection, and in turn bad feelings will be expelled. In my everyday life quotes from his book swim in my mind when I am met with difficult situations, and they enable me to make smarter more thought out and rational decisions. It is fascinating and rewarding each time I don’t simply act on impulse. This book is not for entertainment, not for adventure, and it is definitely not a “light read.” It is a book that will help those who seek help, irritate those who don’t, and fascinate those who wish to learn and grow.

This was a quick read for me, as the story flowed interestingly and effortlessly from start to finish. I was fully invested in the events of the novel and couldn’t wait to see the final outcome.

My first thought while digging into this story was of the book co-wrote with former president Bill Clinton. Admittedly, I thought it COULD have been penned by Clinton, but...well, you need to read it to understand...POV: After the first seven or eight chapters, the point of view shifts to first person, from the eyes of the lead agent charged with protection of the president. First person works quite effectively in this story.BLUSH FACTOR: Other than a few mild curses or crude words, this is absent of anything objectionable and can be shared with pretty much anyone you desire.WRITING & EDITING: Professional. The flow is good and reasonably authentic. It does feel as though it could have been written using reality as a backdrop. Not so much the current president, but just about any other recent commander-in-chief, and his wife, could be imagined without great difficulty.EXCERPT:‘…“Right now I want you to put the word out, especially to the Uniformed Division,” I say. “We’re going to get increased attention from the news media and the usual publicity hounds. I don’t want any fence jumpers, wanting to give the President romantic advice or a Bible, got it? Double up the patrols on the sidewalks…anybody approaches the fences, looks like they’re going to go over, we’re to stop them on the public side. Got it?”“Got it, boss,” Scott says, and goes back to his desk. Scott is an ex-Army Ranger, bulky and tough, and respectful of me and everyone else in the chain of command, which makes him a keeper.I shift my gaze from the network screens—AMBUSH IN ATLANTA seems to be the winning headline this morning—and glance at the electronic status board. We and other members of the Presidential Protective Division are fortunate with this administration in that there are no spoiled kids running around, trying to ditch their agents at bars or dance clubs, or slightly nutty mothers-in-law claiming that Peeping Toms are gazing at them undressing in their guest quarters. There’s just the President and First Lady, which makes my job a hell of a lot less complicated than my predecessor’s.According to the status board, CANAL is on Marine One, seconds away from landing on the South Lawn, and CANARY is—“Hey, Scotty,” I call out, just as he’s picking up the phone. “Mind telling me why CANARY is at a horse farm in Virginia? Her Plan of the Day this morning didn’t indicate that.”He says, “Last-minute change of plans, boss. After the news this morning…’Patterson, James. The First Lady (pp. 30-31). Grand Central Publishing. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEA solid four stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. With your help, my improvement will help readers find books they enjoy reading.

Great book very satisfied

I have read all adult books that James Patterson has published since the original Virgin, and I have loved the characters and stories. The First Lady left me wondering because I do not know whom to blame for the weakness in the writing. As a retired English teacher, I am always looking for good grammar and style. I always taught my students that it is never correct to follow a subject with a pronoun that refers to the subject. Every chapter of this book had at least one, and often several examples of this mistake. It is incorrect to write a sentence such as, "The President, he was upset and worried." The "he" is superfluous and should never be used. The story was interesting, but the writing was bothersome to say the least.

One of the best books I have read by James Patterson. Fast paced with many forks in the path to the end. Each twist in the plot leaves the reader wanting more. Reading this on my Kindle was a pleasure despite the lost sleep as I stayed up flipping pages. Characters are richly developed and believable. I wish there would be a follow up to this story; it certainly leaves the possibilities open for exploration.

The First Lady appeared on my e-reader this morning and I just finished it late this afternoon. Gripping story with believable characters who expose deal making behind Presidential doors.

I couldn’t put it down starting reading at 2:00 a.m. finished at 7:30 a.m. Had a sleepless night cause the book was so entertaining I just wanted to hurry and get to the end. I did the same with The President is missing. Mr Patterson stop writing all these good books I need some sleep.😁

This book is interesting and fast-paced, but the narrator is terrible. She speaks too fast, her cadence is completely off for conversation, but most annoying is the fact that she cannot pronounce words correctly. It is completely distracting. The Potomac is mentioned repeatedly and she calls it Pot-uh-mack. She also mispronounces Arapaho, over and over again. This is a James Patterson book! Hire a professional or at least employ some quality control. Ugh. My brain would not stop flagging all the mispronounced words and let me enjoy the book.

Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth, by Chris Ware

From Booklist

Ware's hero is a doughy, middle-aged loser who retreats into fantasies that he is "The Smartest Kid on Earth." The minimal plot involves Jimmy's tragicomic reunion with the father who abandoned him in childhood. In abruptly juxtaposed flashbacks, Ware depicts previous generations of Corrigan males, revealing how their similar histories of rejection and abandonment culminated in Jimmy's hapless state. What makes the slight story remarkable is Ware's command of the comics medium. His crisp, painstaking draftsmanship, which sets cartoonish figures in meticulously detailed architectural settings, is matched by his formal brilliance. Ware effectively uses tiny, repetitive panels to convey Jimmy's limited existence, then suddenly bursts a page open with expansive, breathtaking vistas. His complex, postmodern approach incorporates such antiquated influences as Windsor McCay's pioneering Little Nemo strips and turn-of-the-century advertising, transforming them into something new, evocative, and affecting. His daunting skill transforms a simple tale into a pocket epic and makes Jimmy's melancholy story the stuff of cartoon tragedy. Gordon FlaggCopyright © American Library Association. Review

“This haunting and unshakable book will change the way you look at your world. Ware captures landscapes made to flatten emotion—a clinic shrouded in snow, a sterile apartment complex—and yet shows the reader the meaning and even beauty in every glimpse from a highway, every snippet of small talk.” —Time magazine“Jimmy Corrigan pushes the form of comics into unexpected formal and emotional territory.” —Chicago Tribune“Graphically inventive, wonderfully realized . . . [Jimmy Corrigan] is wonderfully illustrated in full color, and Ware’s spare, iconic drawing style can render vivid architectural complexity or movingly capture the stark despondency of an unloved child.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Ware’s use of words is sparing, and at times maudlin. But the real joy is his art. It's stunning. In terms of attention to detail, graceful use of color, and overall design—Ware has no peer. And while each panel is relentlessly polished—never an errant line or lazily rendered image—his drawings, somehow, remain delicate and achingly lyrical.” —Dave Eggers, The New York Times Book Review

I first became aware of this book through a review in the October 17, 2005 issue of The New Yorker. The critic stated that this was "the first formal masterpiece of the medium." It was the first review of a comic that I had ever seen in that magazine. While I'd probably say the first formal masterpiece in comics is "Maus," Ware's book is on the shortlist of greatest comics ever written (along with "Watchmen" and Bendis' independent work). At times, "Jimmy Corrigan" is a visually difficult book to follow. It is over 300 pages, and the story begins a little slowly. Corrigan is 36 years old, woefully alone and socially stunted. Ware tells the story of Jimmy's first meeting with his father (Ware drew a lot from his own life). He also tells the story of Jimmy's grandfather in a series of flashbacks that depicts 1890's Chicago with fascinating accuracy.I would recommend this only to a highly selective reader.

Chris Ware may not be for everybody because his writing is so bleak and full of despair, but this is a great work in the graphic novel medium. Ware is a master of balancing panels ranging from tiny to full-page, balancing humor and pathos, and creating a deep atmosphere for the characters. The story shifts between two time periods, and also has brief glimpses into fantasies and intermediate periods in the characters' lives. Mainly it's about a middle aged man who has never known his father going to see him for the Thanksgiving weekend (about 2/3 of the book), and his grandfather's experience as a young boy living with his father during the 1893 Columbian World's Fair (the other 1/3).I'm not sure if the printing Amazon is selling is the same as the one I read from the library, but in the one I read, even the front and back covers and title pages had text and comics full of dark humor and self-deprecation. Reading the book can get a bit overwhelming, but every time I was getting confused or felt it was going too far, something stunning popped up to push me forward.I don't want to give too much away, but for anyone who is not prejudiced against graphic novels or character-driven books, this is a must-read.

Jimmy Corrigan is a brilliant piece of work.I am not (and never have been) much of an active connoisseur of graphic novels. Only in rare instances have I ever purchased and fully enjoyed such an item. I received "Smartest Kid" as a gift from a friend of mine, which she described as 'a decadent film experience'Indeed this book (which really could pass as a novel) is quite a decadent, nostalgic stroll on a downward spiral into a bottomless pit. The story takes place in Chicago, and Jimmy (our poor protagonist with no self confidence) is chucked into a situation where he is to 'reunite' with his estranged father. Jimmy daydreams, he has flashbacks, and is awkward in every possible situation... and we do too right along with him. Ware's unusual and somewhat confusing style of paneling lends itself to the current journey at hand, which makes for an intense and throught provoking read. This book is a real page turner. How will it end? WHEN will it end? Is there hope for Jimmy, or is he a lost soul? This is not reccomended for the younger crowd. There's a small amount of profanity and sexual subject matter. Many of the situations cater toward the understanding of an adult, and there is definitely a lot to read. But all that said, this is an intellegent book with a lot to offer. It might make a good item to buy for father's day. As my dad told me when I got it for him, "thanks for a thoughtful and rewarding gift."

Sure it's cliche but it's probably true. Though chances are with all the media attention it's garnerned, widespread acclaim is soon to come (if it hasn't already). Years ago I heard of Chris Ware's Acme Novelty Library and its wacky size formats and peripherally of the "Smartest Kid on Earth" story that was taking place sporadically within it. Now with the entire story available is a very nicely designed hardcover (and a meaty four hundred pages!) it's quite clear to see that Ware has crafted a masterpiece of the genre. The story alternates in tone between bitter depression and dark humor as it tells the story of Jimmy Corrigan, a lonely shell of a man who's father suddenly appears out of nowhere years after abandoning him to meet him and try to get to know him better. Interspersed with the main story are flashbacks to earlier Corrigan generations, showing that the father issues aren't a new thing with this crew. The plot is simple, but leaves plenty of room for touching scenes and absolutely poetic sequences are Ware explores the multitude of emotions that come with basically meeting your father for the first time. If anything the plot is underrated but that's only because the drawings are so spectacular. Drawing in an exacting style that somehow maintains a pristine kind of beauty, Ware uses all kinds of strange layouts and tiny panels to tell the story, and just when you least expect it blowing the panels out to full page size with enough detail to make your eyes bleed (the scenes alone at the World's Fair are worth the price of the book). By turns thought provoking and depressing, uplifting and hilarious, Ware's book is simply one the most amazing books to come out of the comic medium in a long time and a welcome relief to those who were wondering if all the medium can produce are superheroes. Highly recommended.
