Shortcomings, by Adrian Tomine

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Significant Seven, November 2007: Adrian Tomine draws his mid-twenties slackers with an impeccable, exact line for every slumpy gesture and cultivated rumple. In Shortcomings, this ex-wunderkind tackles a book-length comic for the first time after three collections of stories, and his maturity shows not so much in the ages of his characters, who are still slackly wandering, dropping out of grad school or managing a movie theater, but in his calm and masterful handling of his story, in which vividly individual characters wander through the maze of imposed and self-generated stereotypes of Asian and American identities (the title is a wry allusion to one of the most enduring of those assumptions). Never has that old commonplace that the personal is the political seemed more paralyzing, and more true. --Tom Nissley

Starred Review. SignatureReviewed by Junot DíazTomine's lacerating falling-out-of-love story is an irresistible gem of a graphic novel. Shortcomingsis set primarily in an almost otherworldly San Francisco Bay Area; its antihero, Ben Tanaka, is not your average comic book protagonist: he's crabby, negative, self-absorbed, über-critical, slack-a-riffic and for someone who is strenuously race-blind, has a pernicious hankering for whitegirls. His girlfriend Miko (alas and tragically) is an Asian-American community activist of the moderate variety. Ben is the sort of cat who walks into a Korean wedding and says, Man, look at all these Asians, while Miko programs Asian-American independent films and both are equally skilled in the underhanded art of fighting without fighting. As you might imagine, their relationship is in full decay. In Tomine's apt hands, Tanaka's heartbreaking descent into awareness is reading as good as you'll find anywhere. What a relief to find such unprecious intelligent dynamic young people of color wrestling with real issues that they can neither escape nor hope completely to understand.Tomine's no dummy: he keeps the issues secondary to his characters' messy humanity and gains incredible thematic resonance from this subordination. Tomine's dialogue is hilarious (he makes Seth Rogan seem a little forced), his secondary characters knockouts (Ben's Korean-American only friend Alice steals every scene she's in, and the Korean wedding they attend together as pretend-partners is a study in the even blending of tragedy and farce), and his dramatic instincts second-to-none. Besides orchestrating a gripping kick-ass story with people who feel like you've had the pleasure/misfortune of rooming with, Tomine does something far more valuable: almost incidentally and without visible effort (for such is the strength of a true artist) he explodes the tottering myth that love is blind and from its million phony fragments assembles a compelling meditation on the role of race in the romantic economy, dramatizing with evil clarity how we are both utterly blind and cannily hyperaware of the immense invisible power race exerts in shaping what we call desire. And that moment at the end when the whiteboy squares up against Ben, kung-fu style: I couldn't decide whether to fold over in laughter or to hug Ben or both. Tomine accomplishes in one panel of this graphic novel what so many writers have failed to do in entire books. In crisp spare lines, he captures in all its excruciating, disappointing absurdity a single moment and makes from it our world. (Oct.)Junot Díaz's first novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, has just been published by Riverhead. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. This is a great graphic novel. I would recommend it in hardcover though. It was a quick read. I read it in a night, and enjoyed the Asian-American perspective. Growing up in the Bay Area, I also appreciated the setting even more. Overall, it was thought-provoking, and brought up themes that I have thought about, but never have seen too much about, especially in graphic novel form. This was my first time reading something by Tomine, and I'd like to check out more of his work.

This is a great graphic novella, possibly Tomine's best work to date, telling the dismal story of a disintegrating romance, as well as a wonderfully true-to-life friendship between two prickly, unlikable antihero characters. Ben Tanaka is the book's protagonist, a snarky, self-absorbed cynic who is doggedly pushing his longtime girlfriend away. In between sniping before-bed fights, Ben meets with his friend Alice, and equally cynical but more vivacious grad student who spends her time dodging her PhD exams while indulging in predatory affairs with freshmen students at the University of California, Berkeley. Ben and Alice are two of the most compelling characters to come along in adult comics in years -- they are utterly flawed and utterly likeable; if you enjoy the pleasures of crabby friends, these are people you'd like to hang out with. For me, as an SF East Bay local, the book has a special charm, as Ben frequents numerous Berkeley hot spots -- lunch and a stroll through the trendy Rockridge shopping district, the hustle and bustle of the crowded, grimy foodcourt on Durant Avenue, a conversation in the magazine atrium of Telegraph Avenue's legendary Cody's Books (now sadly closed) and a glimpse at the death of the venerable UC Theater, once Berkeley's greatest repertory movie house. (Ben's character is a manager at the UC Theater, and has to lay off his entire staff when the theater is hit by "temporary" seismic retrofits, which actually happened to the UC many years ago. The cost of the retrofits was too high for the struggling Landmark chain, and they sold the property to some developers who reneged on their promise to fix the theater up and reopen it under new management. The death of this cultural landmark was a great blow to the local community, and it's nice to see the UC immortalized here in Tomine's work. All that's missing is having Ben get a haircut at Frank the Barber's place, just down the street, and the picture would have been perfect.)Even if you're not from Berkeley or the Bay Area there's plenty to enjoy about this book, including its grim assessment of a doomed relationship, and its frank, scathingly un-PC discussions about race and identity for young Asian-American twenty-something hipsters. All in all, a fine work - I'm definitely looking forward to Tomine's next opus! (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain book reviews)

Wow, this is just story telling at its finest. Ever watch an embarrassing moment in slow motion? That was the pace of the book. The main character's frustrations on society and his views of himself is overwhelmingly college-like. There are some very funny moments in the book. Adrian does a good job addressing some stereotypes but does not openly dispel any of it. I felt that he kind of spells it out for the reader but it is up to the reader to believe them or not and that might be worth more than the story itself. I found myself questioning on how much I really know about other cultures and let alone other cultures that have one or two generations in America. I hope that Adrian Tomine continues the main character in other books.

This book is just as I imagined from most reviews (which is good).Tomine has recreated a new and strange social dilemma of modern America. He accurately explains (through his characters) the grandiose ideas that distract two intelligent Asian Americans from the simpler and immediate discomfort they have with their identity, roles within their families and their personal relationships. My favorite aspect of the main character, Ben Tanaka, is he can't see how he causes his own problems. His jealousy, insecurity, and intellectual snobbery fuel his mean and cynical behavior toward his girlfriend. And the best part is, he's not even consciously aware of what he's doing!I like this because it is very accurate recreation of real life. And as the reader, we can objectively watch it unfold in front of us. You can see exactly where Ben Tanaka turns from kind boyfriend into a cynical brat. And he acts like a brat by his own choosing. This is a phenomenon all human beings share. Not realizing how their own behavior and attitudes are the cause of their life's problems. And the ideas of their era (in this case, identity and race in America) is a superficial lense through which many people try to understand their own suffering.Tomine has accurately described the very human conflict of emotions and ideals.-J_Tom_Moon_79

I've read this every couple of years since it was published and it's remarkable to me how much there is so much to see in this slight volume. My sympathies tend to rearrange on each reading -- Ben is the type of character that makes me veer between wanting to slap him and hug him in the space of a page or two. Tomine has such a knack at portraying awkward moments, there are a couple of scenes in here that feel so real it is almost as if they happened to me.One of my favorite realist graphic novels -- the entire thing just feels drawn from life.

All of Adrian's work is worth checking out. Yet, Shortcomings was a story that made me think about who I am more than any of Tomine's other works; nonetheless, the story and characters are as real as the air we breath. If you can't enjoy this work of art you may have to seek professional help. Enjoy Short Comings and all other work by Adrian Tomine--check out other Optic Nerve writings.

Puy Pinillos' colourful, detailed illustrations are absolutely PERFECT for this story. Really, even if I didn't like the story, I would've bought this for the illustrations. Put your cursor on the cover and click to enlarge and to take an inside look. The story is filled with groan-inducing puns (as in when the duck tells the chicken "You're a good egg.").good read-aloud choice for the little ones......

Our children loved this humorous, barnyard Purim story, in which bravery rather than beauty is emphasized. Quack gets the role of Queen Esther, in the barnyard Purim play, much to Cluck's chagrin, but when Cluck bravely rescues Quack from the jaws of a hungry fox, Quack insists that she play the role of Queen Esther in Quack's place. Kids will enjoy the puns, and the artwork is delightful.

Amazon has done us a huge disservice by lumping all the reviews for the various "original" versions of this book together. The version I purchased (black cover with money on the bottom, kindle version) is riddled with errors where the publisher evidently SCANNED the book in and then didn't bother to edit the results. Page numbers appear randomly in the middle of paragraphs, "m" appears where clearly "in" was intended and in some cases paragraphs just end in the middle of a sentence. This is a great book but some of the publishers have done a terrible job reproducing it and Amazon isn't helping by grouping very different copies together in the same review group.I hope to update this review when I find a less crappy copy of this book, but avoid the version with the black cover with money on the bottom. (See pictures)

First, i was thinking that this book will only help me in the performance part of my life, by giving tips, habits and principles of the most succesfull people on the planet. But my image of the book changed when i read all of it. It helps also on how to become an incredible person, how to treat people and how to see all that happens to you in a different way.Second, it talks about BELIEVING, it says that in order to reach whatever you seek you first have to believe and have faith in your abilities, in the plan that God has for you and to BELIEVE IN YOU!! Also it teaches you that you need to have faith, persistance and very BIG BIG dreams. For all of you that are reading this review i want to tell you THAT YOU CAN DO IT!! YOU WERE BORN TO BE GREAT!! But people dont believe it because of what other people says about them but ignore the negative people and STAY LOCKED WITH YOUR DREAM, DONT LET ANYONE TELL YOU WHAT TO DO OR HOW TO THINK. IGNORE THEM AND STAY FOCUS ON YOUR PURPOSE. I WANT TO TELL YOU THAT I BELIEVE IN YOU AND I LOVE YOU. YOU CAN MAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!

I have read over 50 self-help books in my life so far. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill is in my TOP 5! In fact, I personally know two millionaires (one being a family member) and both HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book! The family member originally moved to the United States in his early 30's and hardly spoke a word of English. Actually started off delivering pizzas. One day he was gifted the book Think and Grow Rich by a very wealthy customer. He devoured this book and read it over 20 times! A decade later he became a millionaire (Net Worth: ~10 Million USD). True story. In fact, if you do your research you will learn that Think and Grow Rich has produced the most millionaires out of any self-help product.FRAUD ALERT ABOUT CLAIMED "UNABRIDGED" VERSIONS:Yes, this is an amazing book! However, there are so many versions of this book. Amazon clumps all of the reviews of the various editions in to one group which adds to the confusion. The BEST version is the 1937 ORIGINAL. Many publishers of this book claim that there version is the 1937 ORIGINAL UNABRIDGED. Then you read the introduction and find out that the publisher revised it, abridged or "modernized" it. Thus making the original claim FALSE/LIE! Most interestingly, these revised/updated versions remove essential key words such as the word VIBRATIONS. The removal/substitution of this word completely changes the context of the sentence. I am a fairly spiritual person and reading the original unmodified 1937 version was MUCH MORE PROFOUND to me. In fact, so much of an affect that in 6 months of reading the original my salary increased by 50% WHILE working from home 98%. Naturally, I gave away all of the other versions I hadI spent over 10 HOURS reading through many comments on Amazon and Google. My goal was to find truly REAL 1937 ORIGINAL UNABRIDGED versions. Here are the BEST FORMATS of the ACTUAL REAL 1937 ORIGINAL UNABRIDGED VERSIONS of Think and Grow Rich:Kindle Version: Think and Grow Rich: The Original 1937 Unedited Edition - Created by the OFFICIAL Napoleon Hill Foundation. Unfortunately, their physical book format is terrible. I think they simply photocopied the original and then tried to fit it on each page. The results, the font is too small and there is a TON of wasted white space for the margins. It is simply awful to read even though the their intentions were good. The most readable physical book version I have found is by Melvin Powers linked below.Physical Book Version: Think and Grow Rich - Facsimile Edition that is by forward Melvin Powers.Enjoy!P.S. I would be grateful if someone could point me to a good quality audiobook that is 100% for certain is a narration of the ACTUALLY REAL 1937 ORIGINAL UNABRIDGED VERSION.

Despite the age of this book, I found the underlying lessons it contained to be highly relevant to my life today. The most valuable ideas I gathered from this book:1) You cannot acquire great wealth without a concrete plan for attaining that wealth, a serious passion that compels you to act on your plan continuously, and great faith that your plan will allow you to succeed.2) Many of the world's greatest achievers were passionate to the point of obsession, and in order to emulate their success you must cultivate a desire until it becomes an obsession.3) Material success does not come solely as a result of knowledge acquisition, but rather from one's ability to organize and transform specialized knowledge such that it can be delivered to a wide audience in the form of a product or service.4) Persistence often makes the difference between success and failure. It is a state of mind that is essential to success and can be overcome through effort.5) One of the common attributes of highly successful people is the ability to reach decisions quickly and to change them slowly. Most of us are the opposite.

Finally! a clean and unabridged edition. I had to purchase two other editions before finding this one. It is clean, good size font, and true to the original 1937 wording. Published by Dauphin Publications ISBN 978-1939438256. Nice job!
