Amazon.com Review

The media has temporarily turned its large but constantly blinking eye away from cult-of-the-day reportage after the Waco conflagration, but such organizations continue to collect adherents. Martin Gardner, best known as mathematical-games-meister for Scientific American, turns his refreshingly unblinking gaze on the origin and continuing growth of the Urantian cult. It is a marvellous study of the ways in which ideas can be propagated through society.

From Publishers Weekly

First published in 1955, the Urantia Book, a 2097-page tome hailed by its advocates as the channeled wisdom of celestial beings, posits one infinite God, the great I AM, and billions of lesser gods. It contains pronouncements on evolution, cosmology, physics and quantum mechanics, which Gardner (The New Age: Notes of a Fringe Watcher) finds deeply flawed, and it includes a biography of Jesus that asserts he toured Rome and Greece at ages 28 and 29, becoming an adept of Greek philosophy, mathematics and art. The Urantia cult was founded by two former Seventh-day Adventists?Chicago psychiatrist William Sadler (1875-1969) and his brother-in-law, Wilfred Kellogg (1876-1956), a businessman. In this intriguing expose, Gardner, former Scientific American mathematics columnist, makes a strong case that the Urantia Book is filled with plagiarized passages from other cult books. He also charts bitter schisms among the Urantians and looks at other Adventist splinter groups, notably David Koresh's Branch Davidian cult consumed by flames near Waco, Tex. This book by Martin Gardner is an attempt to discredit "The Urantia Book" and to expose it as an elaborate hoax. It is a worthwhile counterbalance to the book entitled "A History of the Urantia Papers" by Larry Mullins and Dr. Meredith Sprunger. By reading these two books, you will get two opposing points of view regarding the origins of "The Urantia Book."In my estimation, Gardner did not accomplish his task with this book. He offers a few thought-provoking critiques that are difficult to refute, but for the most part, his assessments are subjective interpretations of objective facts. More advanced students of "The Urantia Book" could offer strong rebuttals to his conclusions on almost every point.By reading the two books mentioned in this review, plus "The Urantia Book" itself, you will be able to make an informed decision as to whether you will consider this book to be a revelation.

Having stumbled across the long and arcane Urantia Book at college, I was interested to read Gardner's skeptical take on the history of this rather obscure document. He does a good job in summarizing the somewhat bizarre Urantian cosmology and reveals the mindset of it's all too human authors, who came out of the Seventh Day Adventists religion. Doctor Sadler was an intelligent, well read man but his ideas on topics like health (esp sex and eugenics), politics and science seem eccentric to modern readers. Gardner makes a compelling case for Urantia being a continuation of the religious duplicity that caused Dr Sadler to lose faith in Ellen White, the Adventist prophet. The origins of a religion like Urantia is a familiar story to anyone who has studied new religious movements, and speaks volumes about our need to believe. The 1930's era scientific errors and rampant plagiarism that undermine the Urantia books alleged supernatural origin support Gardner's conclusion. In a postscript to the second edition published in 2008, Gardner reviews the chaos in the Urantia movement in recent years as different factions have formed around new channeled messages.True believers will likely find this book offensive as a result, in much the same way that Walter Rea's The White Lie caused chaos in the SDA twenty years ago when he revealed the full extent of White's plagiarism in her prophecies. In contrast with other reviewers, I didn't find Gardner to be too acerbic, although clearly he isn't afraid to slaughter some sacred cows. The organization of the book isn't ideal and a good editor could have trimmed down some of the excess material that comes from Gardner's fascination with mathematical puzzles. Chapters on people in Sadler's sphere like the famous Dr Kellog are revealing but deserve a book of their own.Time has proven that Urantia can be grouped with other 'inspired' documents of the early and mid twentieth century like the Oahspe bible, Ruth and Ernest Norman's Unarius Academy (see When Prophecy Never Fails: Myth and Reality in a Flying-Saucer Group) and the Aetherius Society, and follows in the footsteps of earlier prophets like Swedenborg. The explosion of New Age channeling has rendered this genre commonplace in recent years, stealing some of the Urantia book's unique glamor, but it remains a testament to Dr Sadler's ingenuity. Prophets keep coming up with this stuff, and believers keep believing it.

Wish, Gardner had used more stuff from Dr. (I. J.) Matrix

Many postings point out that the Ubook has been plagiarised. It has, but as the Ubook admits this, not with citations, a citation would be overcomplimentary. The work is many levels above the original source authors, or "those that have pieces of the truth (during 1955 and earlier) in the time of the writing of the Ubook"We may resort to pure revelation only when the concept of presentation has had no adequate previous expression by the human mind."There a perhaps thousands of human source authors, there are no Ubook readers that doubt this, but if you would take the time to view the concepts that believed to be plagiarised you might come away believing as I do that it is akin to turning a Ford Model T into a modern Cadillac Eldorado. They both roll, use engines to propel but one is an advanced art form while the other remains mere transportation. The Ubook is a book written with beautiful precise advanced concepts written concisely.

For those who are seeking truth, Martin Gardner has done us a great service. He covers the history of those people who brought us the Urantia book. He makes a convincing case that this giant tome was conceived in deception. For those who believe that the Bible is true, will perceive that this possible channeled fantasy contradicts the Bible. For those who don't believe the Bible, they need to know that the creators of the Urantia book sprung forth or evolved from the Seventh day Adventist Church. A denomination with a false prophet and a history full of fanaticism. I highly recommend Martin Gardner's book, for anyone who has looked at the Urantia book or thinking of buying that ultimate grand cosmic fantasy.

Sandra Collins, SLIS, Univ. of Pittsburg, wrote in Library Journal, April 15, 1995: "Given the lack of scholary distance from the subject, the patronizing tone and the gross editorializing, it would be difficult to recommend this book to any library". Sarah Lewis, of the Univ. of Wales, stated: "Martin Gardner is one of the few people outside the Urantia Foundation who has undertaken research into the movement. His research is worth noting, although his position as a great skeptic does not allow his conclusions much academic credibility" (Lewis, James R. and Hammer, Olav (2007). The Invention of Sacred Tradition. Cambridge University Press. ISBN 0-521-86479-8)

I am 10 years old and I love GYMNASTICS. This was a very good book for me. It had a lot of surprises. In the middle of the book, the main character was very mean. But at the end of the book, the mean girl changed her attitude and was very nice and brave. I am not an avid reader, but this book I recommend for you to read.

My girls love Jake Maddox books! I wish they wern't so expensive though. Even kids who don't enjoy reading as much as others are drawn to these stories.

As a 4th grade gymnast, I really enjoyed this book. The reading was easy enough to be fun, but not so easy it was boring.

I really liked it had a good moral to it I believe that the lesson really makes sense keep up the good work Maddox

Review

“Servant-leadership has never been more applicable to the world of leadership than it is today.” --Ken Blanchard, author, The Heart of Leadership “We are each indebted to Greenleaf for bringing spirit and values into the workplace.” --Peter Block, author, Stewardship “I congratulate the Greenleaf Center for its invaluable service to society and for carrying the torch of servant-leadership over the years.” --Stephen R. Covey, author, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People “Robert Greenleaf takes us beyond cynicism and cheap tricks and simplified techniques into the heart of the matter, into the spiritual lives of those who lead.” --Parker Palmer, author, The Courage to Teach “Servant-leadership is more than a concept. As far as I’m concerned, it is a fact. I would simply define it by saying that any great leader, by which I also mean an ethical leader of any group, will see herself or himself primarily as a servant of that group and will act accordingly.” --M. Scott Peck, author, The Road Less Traveled “No one in the past thirty years has had a more profound impact on thinking about leadership than Robert Greenleaf. If we sought an objective measure of the quality of leadership available to society, there would be none better than the number of people reading and studying his writings.” --Peter M. Senge, author, The Fifth Discipline

From the Inside Flap

"Servant and leader–can these two roles be fused in one real person, no matter what the calling or level of status? If so, can such a person live and be productive in the real world of the present?" Robert K. Greenleaf said the answer is "Yes." Practicing Servant-Leadership brings together a group of exceptional thinkers who offer a compendium of thought on the topic of bringing servant-leadership into the daily lives of leaders. Each contributor focuses on his or her area of expertise, exploring how servant-leadership works in the real world, using examples from a variety of organizations such as businesses, nonprofits, churches, schools, foundations, and leadership organizations. Highlights of the book’s twelve essays include How the idealistic vision of the servant as leader works even in the competitive world of business Encouraging leaders to begin by looking at what they themselves want to become and then to bring this knowledge into their daily leadership How the principles of servant-leadership can enhance our understanding and practice of philanthropy Examining the board chairperson’s especially vital role as a servant- leader Revealing the important role that religious congregations and seminaries can play in helping to hold organizations in trust around the exercise of their power and prerogative Exploring what leaders learn from being followers Those new to servant-leadership will find Practicing Servant-Leadership a practical guide to the model, and those already familiar with the model will find new practical application and inspiration.

Many people feel as though being a leader means to stand and point to others to do the tasks that need to be done, not so...One must pull the group together, incorporate as many as possible to pool their thoughts and ideas, and to assure the group feels a sense of accomplishment when the task has been completed. Can you say you're sorry when you have made a mistake? Are you willing to expand your thought's to include those of other's? Are you willing to take direction from another, even though you are the leader or play the role of the leader for a period of time? This book will assist one in understanding what it takes to be a good leader and team player.

This book is a collection of essays, all of them based around Robert Greenleaf's groundbreaking essay "The Servant as Leader" and book "Servant Leadership" from the 1970's. Greenleaf introduced a new way to look at leadership, with a focus first on serving, and the ripples of his revolutionary vision for leadership are still resonating with us today. Spears and Lawrence have collected an eclectic assortment of reflections on Greenleaf's work. Some of them are simple essays describing the various behavioral components of Greenleaf's servant leadership. Some of them are interviews with well-known advocates of servant leadership. Some of them are stories of a particular company that has been run under the framework of servant leadership or a unique partnership between two organizations which were collaboratively joined together under servant leadership. This great variation in both style and substance of the various essays kept the book fresh and readable. However, the almost spastic nature of the disparate essays also kept the book from feeling like a cohesive unit with any sort of specific direction. As much as the variation kept the reading experience lively, it almost felt jarring at times to bounce around from essay to essay, without any sense of connection from one to the next (beyond an obvious adoration for Robert Greenleaf and his work that was consistent from beginning to end). I realize that a book of this nature simply cannot flow together as if written by one author, but I feel like some sense of continuity would have been helpful. In any case, I'm glad to have read this book, if for no other reason than to have encountered some specific examples of servant leadership in real-life institutions. Greenleaf's book presents a compelling vision for his idea of servant leadership, but it remains largely theoretical and rather abstract. The stories in this book help to fill out the picture that Greenleaf was painting. Some of the essays were rather forgettable, and the lack of continuity prevented this book from being one of my favorite leadership books, but I'm happy to recommend it to those who would like some helpful follow-up to Greenleaf's work, including specific cases of servant leadership in action.

A must read for anyone in management or wanting to enter into management. Had to read for class and now it is part of my favorite books.

I enjoy reading anything that Larry Spears writes with regard to Servant Leadership!

AN EXCELLEN BOOK.

school required

Too much story line and not enough content. Book could be reduced to half it's size while still containing all pertinent information. I might consider selling this one back when done

While my traveling days are still ahead of me (always more of the world to see), Koreatown by Deuki Hong and Matt Rodbard definitely points my internal compass to Korea. The book is peppered with little interviews and asides from others who share the love of the Korean cuisine. The stories are lively, the history and love emanating from the little looks into Korean food are enthralling. I really enjoyed that the stories are not just from Koreans or Korean-Americans, they really run the gamut of different people who are bit by the bug of Korean food. Just a fantastic read. The books is set up like a regular cook book, starting with appetizers (and banchan) and then progressing to various categories of noodles, meats, drinks, and desserts. The recipes are fun and seem like something one could actually produce in kitchen. The "pantry" section is informative, clear, and if you can't find a local supplier, the authors even give you online options to order from. I personally am excited about all the banchan recipes because I discovered Korean food a few years ago and sometimes want those little plates with just rice to even out a tiring day. Now I can indulge. Especially since most of the recipes are made ahead of time, my fridge is about to get funky!! I can't wait to make the "Dakgangjeong" (Koreatown fried chicken) and my own mandu. If you read the Introduction, you will get some great advice from the authors and a fun way to look at the cookbook. The photography is all candid, from their trips around the country eating Korean food. I love this idea, especially in the technology age. I feel like the lack of staging really makes you feel like part of the experience that they are presenting. I especially enjoy it because we all know the various tricks used in photography and those are refreshingly absent. The pictures are what the food really looks like as it comes out from the kitchen. And it looks delicious. I admit that I looked over the cookbook during my morning coffee and was jealous. I didn't even want Korean food at the time, but man, that changed my feelings quite quickly. Le sigh. Guess I'm taking a trip up to the Korean restaurant and grocery store.I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

In order to get my head around Korean food, I purchased this book before a 2 1/2 week trip to Korea. Not just a cookbook, it has a lot of information, including an introduction before every recipe and short essays like "How to Cook Korean Food at Home Without Pissing Off Your Neighbors." The book also has commentary (and in some cases, recipes) from culinary superstars such as Eric Ripert and David Chang.Bear in mind that, as Hong states, this book focuses on the food found in K-towns and Korean-influenced restaurants around the US. So you'll find that the some of the recipes are riffs on Korean food rather than traditional recipes. But they are all true to the source - this isn't a "fusion" cookbook containing recipes for Korean Tacos and the like. The Bossam (crispy pork belly) recipe is "the bomb", and the cooking technique really makes it happen. Rather than cooking small chunks on a tabletop grill, which was what I experienced in Korea, Hong's method calls for boiling and then roasting a 3# piece in the oven. What makes the end result so killer is his method of pricking the skin with hundred of holes to help render the fat and crisp the skin. Cooking it in the oven also means that a tabletop grill is freed up for bulgogi or kabli or a hotpot or whatever. If you plan to make the Bossam (and you should), here's a tip that worked for me. Hong recommends using the point of a sharp knife or skewer to poke the tiny holes in the skin. However, you aren't supposed to push through the skin and into the meat. I found this difficult to accomplish given the amount of pressure required to penetrate the tough pigskin. My solution was to use an oversized safety pin to do the job. I took a large, 2.5" safety pin and bent the prong to a 90 degree angle. I then gripped the pin by the body, placing my thumb on the end directly above the prong. From there, it's fairly easy to puncture the skin by focusing your force on your thumb. In addition, using the short safety pin gives you more control than something longer like a skewer or knife, and once you puncture the skin, your knuckles will stop you from penetrating deeper into the meat. I've attached a few pictures of what I did; I purchased the safety pins through Amazon. So anyway, it's a great, fun-to-read, cookbook. And I know I'll be returning to the pork belly technique for the rest of my life.FYI - If you are planning a trip to Korea, or are just really interested in Korean food, I found the following resources useful during my trip:- For traditional Korean cooking, I have enjoyed "Maangchi's Real Korean Cooking." If you doubt her quest for authenticity, she suggests fermenting kimchi in jars that are placed on top of an electric blanket. This mimics the conditions of the heated floors that are found in traditional Korean homes. Despite this attention to detail, her recipes are simple and straightforward.- "Eating Korea" by Graham Holiday. Having lived in Korea in the mid-90's, the journalist/author returns and travels across Korea to document traditional foods and dying culinary techniques.- Smart phone app: "Korean Food Guide Book" published by the Korea Foundation. It has some basic information about ingredients, methods, and tastes, but I found the alphabetical listing of ingredients to be invaluable. The press of a button translates an ingredient name from English to Korean characters (Hunminjeongeum) to the Romanized word/pronunciation. Many times I didn't know exactly what I was eating, so I'd hand the server my iPhone, they'd select the word from the Hunminjeongeum list, and then I'd translate their selection into English. It was also great because I could then take a snapshot of the screen for future reference.- Final tip if you travel to Korea: drink as much makgeolli as you can! Pronounce it like "broccoli" without the "r" and they'll understand you well enough.

Been on a major Korean food kick thanks to this cookbook. The braised tofu recipe is the best tofu I've ever eaten, and I've eaten a lot of tofu. The sesame spinach is simple and perfect, a staple. I make it turn my back for a minute and it's gone. Beautiful photos and writing. Highly recommended.

I used to live and work near a major metro Koreatown, and I miss the food! This book has been a godsend with enabling me to make korean food at home that matches my experiences in Korean restaurants. I've since made many delightful bowls of soup, kimchi far better than what I can buy at the nearest Hmart, and my pajeon is awesome.

This cookbook is amazing. The recipes I've tried are so good. And the book provides so much information. I was able to go to the store and know exactly what to look for because of the detail on the ingredients. From someone who has no Korean background this cookbook gave me so much new insight into Korean food.

my husband loves this book

Awesome inspired cookbook with some tasty recipes for the Korean-food lovers out there. We have made a handful of recipes already and none have disappointed.

My roommate and I love korean food as we spent about 3 months there. This book was great help in remaking some of the great food we had.

I own many ethnic cookbooks but none on Korean cooking. I saw these chefs on a TV program and realized I had to have this cookbook. I'm not disappointed with any of the recipes. Great addition to my collection.
