Club Shadowlands breaks the vital foundational BDSM pledge to "safe, sane and consensual" participation in an almost criminal way, foisting a first-ever BDSM scene on a hapless, obviously uninformed, innocent, vanilla young stranger who wandered in literally "out of the cold" in search of a dry place to wait out a rainstorm! A ridiculous I've-never-heard-of BDSM club situation devolves into a shameful mismanagement of a misunderstanding by a supposed Master Dom who immediately conducts an I've-never-heard-of-such-a-stupid-club-rule public punishment scene. This travesty is committed, even more absurdly, by a man who we later learn is a trained Psychologist and who also has these (fantasy-only) skills to read emotions and minds in others. I won't go further into the ever unfolding absurd events that follow, especially since a few simple questions to ensure the newcomer has understood the rules she was asked to read would have prevented the entire sad shebang. Surely a bit of practical caution exists in real life clubs?!I think the entire BDSM novel author community should rise up and require the Club Shadowlands author Ms. Sinclair to totally rewrite the first four chapters of this book. The BDSM portrayal as normal and acceptable is horrific to the BDSM reputation and could turn away the uninitiated in horror or greatly mislead newcomers into severe personal danger. Apparently the author has revised this book and not even corrected/strengthened her introductory statement to readers to be careful if new to BDSM. This is an unacceptable BDSM misrepresentation left hanging out there in the ether, and worse, by an award-winning best-selling author whose book will be read good or bad. It must be remedied.(I would have assigned only one star to this book, but I did force myself down off the emotional cliff the first four chapters forced me onto, and after reading the rest of Club Shadowlands, enjoyed it as a series of sexual encounters between two strangers who are starting to know and appreciate each other as individuals.)

Wish I could give this 5 stars, but I can't. I have it as a firm 3.5, which is a shame because it's a good book and well written. With so many couples (but mainly women) ending up in the ER because of curiosity, I feel BDSM authors have a responsibility to actually do some research. When authors like Shayla Black and EL James are capitalizing on alternative sex lifestyles without bothering to do any research, I take comfort in authors like Cherise Sinclair who do. I actually recommend those curious about D/s relationships to read the Shadowlands series because she does an excellent job of explaining things in a way for the novices to understand. But I think that's why books 1 and 2 weren't a total home run for me.Unlike the later books which had suspense, angst, intense romance and extremely complex characters, the early books laid the groundwork for explaining the lifestyle...and future storylines. I doubt there are any better books for newbies than Shadowlands 1 & 2, it's great characters along with great explanations of alt-lifestyle basics, but it makes it just a tad DIY/how-to for those who aren't newbies and who are just looking for a romantic story.Beth and Nolan's story, as well as their novella are (and apparently will remain) my favorites. After the 10th time reading Protecting His Own, I wondered if I'd ever be able to get to the point of being able to read it without feeling a hole in my chest or turning into a blubbering idiot. I know what's coming...heck, I probably know it by heart, and yet I still can't take the risk of reading it in public.Plus, getting glimpses into Kari/Dan, Jessica/Z in the subsequent books are always cherry on the cake moments for me. So obviously I formed an attachment for the early-on-the-series characters, they just don't grip me as much as the later works. Could be because there's just so much going on in the others that they suck you into an emotional hurricane of worry and pain and bittersweet happiness, whereas the first two books were strictly about the main characters, learning about the lifestyle and following their burgeoning relationships.Make no mistake, just because I am not as in love with the first two books as I am with the others, doesn't mean that they shouldn't be read. It just means 'hurry up and read these books so you can get the full impact of the other stories and unfolding romances'.I think the Shadowlands is a must read series, I thank Ms Sinclair for giving us these wonderful characters, and I will never understand how Christian Grey got a movie and Nolanman did not. I can only think that this is what comes from an entire generation of women the world over growing up on Harlequin/Mills & Boons where we're made to believe dating a guy who treats you like crap but then professes his love is what romance is supposed to be. Here's to hoping that writers like Ms Sinclair will play a big part in putting a stop to that adolescent and dangerous way of thinking. I've seen way too many women in hospitals and domestic violence shelters who thought a man who treated them like they were nothing loved and respected them.

Mind reading Dom? Ok, I'll play along. Stranded in the middle of nowhere storyline? Not creative, but ok. Punishment by complete strangers while the "loving" mind-reading Dom calls her brave even though she clearly doesn't want it? WTF, no. Crappy writing aside, this felt uncomfortable to read. I couldn't keep reading because no woman in her right mind would sleep with a guy who so disturbingly manipulated her and violated her trust. Fantasy is one thing, but this is just gross.

I have been intrigued by the world of BDSM but any time I researched that world, it was always depicted to the fullest - sub being tied, gagged, flogged, and in the most painful and compromising positions. I read this book on a whim and was sucked in from the very beginning, I was actually shocked and dismayed when I clicked for the next page and then realized that I had completed the book. This and utter did a great job (in my eyes as a complete novice in this area) at introducing the world of BDSM and some expectations. I loved the characters, real life people and not billionaires with a person of no self esteem. Jessica was a full figured, accountant that had the normal reservations that many people would that have curves given that society now sees beauty by how thin and slim you are. Master Z is a person I would love to meet, a guy who can read your body signals and understand your wants and needs; he is the perfect man indeed and then he has a little kink to him. The book was a gradual build, not just wham in your face l; which made it all the more believable. I found myself relating to Jessica a lot and now I wished this place was real and that I might meet my own Master Z! Lol. Thanks Ms. Sinclair for this great read!
