For centuries Fujiwara Teika's "Hyakunin Isshu" top-hundred poem collection has served as a gentle first step into the wider world of classical Japanese verse, and with this wonderful Penguin edition that tradition seems set to continue. Each waka is translated with a sensitive balance of care and creativity so that it works well as an actual poem in English, with the original Japanese text and a poem-by-poem commentary available elsewhere in the book so that the individual reader can choose how deep they wish to go. For me this entailed a good deal of flipping back and forth with double bookmarks, but for a publication intended for a general audience such an arrangement seems appropriate. Easy enough to breeze through the poems enjoying each one unhindered that way. The commentary is generally interesting and useful if referred to, and frequently illuminating in the way it delves into the reasoning behind translation choices, offering alternate takes and differing interpretations in a manner I found particularly informative. So delightfully compelling for old hands, delightfully accessible for newcomers, this is a definitive version of a good ol' beloved classic.
