Gr 3-5–Bober's picture-book biography is narrated by Frost's oldest daughter, Lesley, and based upon her childhood journal. It begins with the family's return home from two years in England, where they had lived so Frost could concentrate on writing poetry instead of farming. “Papa had the courage to trust his own feelings and know what he had to do. He made a reckless choice,†says the teen, quoting the first verse of “The Road Not Taken.â€Â As she waits with her mother and siblings in New York's Grand Central Terminal for the train to New Hampshire, her father visits the publisher of a book of his poetry that his wife saw reviewed in the New Republic. Lesley recalls her childhood at Derry Farm, where her papa raised chickens and sold their eggs; took his family on all-day Sunday picnics; and, with his wife, homeschooled the children. Reading and memorizing poetry were highly stressed in the Frost household, as was the purchase of books. (“Papa thought that any book worth reading twice was worth owning.â€) Bober has captured the poet's personality, his love for family, and the inner strength that allowed him to follow his dreams. Indeed, he returns to the station with a contract for two books–the beginning of his successful writing career. An author's note offers further biographical information. To pass the time, 15-year-old Lesley daydreams, remembering her family’s years on their New Hampshire farm and reflecting on her father’s love of reading, astronomy, and words. The writing is smooth, and the subject is well-known to Bober, who wrote the young-adult biography A Restless Spirit: The Story of Robert Frost (1991). Created with ink, colored pencil, and watercolor, Gibbon’s illustrations light up the pages with fresh, naive images portraying the family’s activities. While parts of the book are adapted from Lesley Frost’s journal, reminiscence is a relatively static framework for biographical information. The most appreciative audience will be readers who love Robert Frost’s poetry. I have never outgrown my love for picture books. I have also been a lifelong lover of the poems of Robert Frost. I just couldn't resist "Papa is a Poet: A Story About Robert Frost". What a delight. I love how the author writes about the Frost family and their life on their farm. This story is "bookended" by the story of Robert Frost discovering that his poetry has been published in the U.S. after he and his family returned from living in England. The text is written in a style that is easy enough for children, but cool enough for adults. Some of Frost's most famous poems are included at the end of the book. The illustrations, which appear to be watercolors or possibly mixed media, are wonderful. I love the illustrations as much as the story. The entire book is an inspiration. Get this book for your child, or children. Also, don't be afraid to buy it for yourself. Either way, you won't regret it.

My husband is Papa in our family and he loves this especially , again this is my way to introduce RF to a younger generation who otherwise wouldnt know of him .. In school I don't know if they even teach poetry anymore .Its a lost art I think along with many other art forms today.. Keep the good books coming my way..thx

I recently discovered this gem of a picture book at the library. I have always enjoyed the poems of Robert Frost, and I was intrigued to see a non-fiction picture book about his life. His life story is told from the perspective of one of his daughters named Lesley. In the author's notes she explains that she adapted much of what is in the story from Lesley's journal. Lesley's recollections of her father and their family life as told in this story are simply delightful. My favorite part is when she says, "Papa told us to reread stories we remembered with pleasure. He wanted us to enjoy books so much that we would be lonely without them. And he told us to memorize poems in order to know them by heart." This inspired me to have my son Isaac memorize one of my favorite Robert Frost poems, "Nothing Gold Can Stay." The illustrations in the book are stellar and they recreate beautiful snapshots of Robert Frost's life--my favorite is the one where he is bringing his wife a bouquet of flowers. As a nice bonus, the last few pages of the book include quotes from Robert frost and some of his best known poems such as "The Road Not Taken."

The tale is related by Robert Frost’s oldest daughter and gives a gentle slice of family life, interspersed with lines of poetry. Twelve poems are included in the back of the book for further reading. Also presented is an author’s note to further clarify biological details for students writing reports. Quotations and photographs with captions will pique a reader’s interest. The colorful illustrations, fine in detail and resembling Americana Folk Art make this book a joy to peruse.
