I was at first reluctant to spend so much money on a book that might not be pertinent to the Southern Hemisphere and Zone 12 +++ where I live, but was intrigued by the horticultural tips in the book. I do think that understanding doing and growing bonsai tops being told what the only way is to do bonsai. From the first page, #1 grabbed my attention and half an hour later, I could not put the book down and had to be reminded to go back to work. I am also a great fan of Walter Pall and loved looking at the photographs at the back. There is honestly nothing bad I can say about this book and I tried to be very objective. I cannot wait to apply all I have learned and fix my mistakes. Most of all, I think the author challenged me to "do bonsai" better than anybody else ever has. I hope we can look forward to Tips #502 to #1001:-)

A very ambitious book. While I don't know if I agree with everything the author states, I learned some new things, and overall challenged what I think. If nothing else, this book gives any bonsai enthusiast plenty to consider. I am unaware of any book that has taken a scientific, thorough approach to bonsai like the author. Extremely informative and one of a kind book. I am happy I bought it.

Love it! Definitely a must buy for anyone interested in Bonsai. It's easy to read (captivating and humorous too!) with beautiful photographs. The author has written it in such a way that encourages a new bonsai enthusiast to not be intimidated to start their new hobby yet teaches the most skilled bonsai expert something new to apply that actually works!

This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in starting the art of bonsai. It walks you through problems you will face, along with giving you wonderful advise about taking care of your plants. The book also goes into detail about things that are thought to be true but are actually false. If you have any interest in bonsai, I highly recommend this book for you.

It came in time as promised. It is a wonderful book filling the gaps of my horticultural knowledge.

There's some good information packed in these pages, but in a writing and organizational style that needed heavy editing before being sold. The ideas presented are often not followed up with direct or specific advice. Instead, the book meanders as if a bunch of index cards with notes jotted down were quickly put together with some sarcasm laid on top. The principles are good ones. Perhaps somebody will organize them into a list and then edit them into better shape. The cost of the book could be justified as a table top book of Walter Pall's amazing trees, but the photos are printed very poorly. The paper is not appropriate for even moderately decent photo quality; the photos themselves are not much better than good snapshots; unforgivable, however, is that the photos are of extremely poor resolution (it's like looking at photos from 15 years ago when people over-compressed jpegs or had low resolution digital cameras; tree detail is lost due to resolution problems and the colors look dull). In short, you can get all of this information on the internet. Both the author and Pall's introduction speak as if nobody in bonsai really understands horticulture and this book is the real deal on science. However, much of this is already out there if you read carefully online or choose books by highly regarded authors. For those that want a real science background in botany in general, I suggest "Botany for Gardeners" by Brian Capon. Capon's writing is amazing.

This book was of a great help when I started my hobby of growing bonsai. It is very useful and answered all the problems I faced during the growth of bonsai. It has step by step instructions with pretty picture ideas of bonsai. With additional advises and tips and tricks, my bonsai grew in to a perfect and beautiful plant and it is still alive. This book points out the small mistakes that we make and ways to correct them to have a wonderful Bonsai Tree. There are many books available in the market, that talk about one problem and leave out the other, but this book is a complete package. This book is a must have for all the beginners in the art of Bonsai as well as the expert bonsai enthusiasts, as it is a very informative book.

I want to start off by stating I did not read any other reviews of this book before purchasing and before writing my review. I want to thank the author for writing one amazing book that did not have one word or sentence that did not help. We were looking to retire possibly overseas, and Panama was a place that was tooted as number one by those who make money on it. She does not - other than the these books. I do realize her view is from her own experience and where she lived and working there, but it sure explain things one would never know otherwise. Many of the things I wanted to get away from are worse there and having worked for the US Government for 37 years and having dealt with that, it almost seems like they modeled how poorly the US government is run after Panama daily life. I could not take dealing with that again. That alone made me cross off Panama. What I saw as restful nice place to retire is really like a new job dealing with all the things I despise that I will not mention here. Yes, it is their country and customs, but not for me.All that said, do buy and read this book because life in Panama is nicely explained in this well-written book and will certainly be the best step you ever made to find a nice retirement spot. There are better, less costly places to live in the USA. It is best to read this book to learn for yourself so all this can be understood.Please do buy this book it is worth it on many levels. I am just so pleased with it. Again, I thank the author. Although I am NOT going to Panama, I just bought her second book (II) as I found it so interesting. The author eventually moved to Costa Rica, I hope she is writing a book on it.

Just an okay book that really should have been titled "The Gringo Guide to Panama City, Panama" since no other part of the country is addressed anywhere. There author seems to have moved to Panama City with her husband with expectations of starting a business in that city. While there are some good insights to the Panamanian culture, other lifestyles such as retirement are pretty much ignored, especially in outlying areas.It is a rather small book and simply did not have the depth that I was looking for.

Amazing amount of useful information regarding a lot of what you'd need and think about when you got there. As I said in a review of the follow up book, be sure to get as current as possible information about any future move. Countries like Panama have varying degrees of modern and traditional and the young folk and immigrants cause the need for growth in certain parts of the country, but not all. It is well written, and gives you a lot to think about. Research 1st as much as you can, then you won't be too surprised.

This book contains some basic information about life in Panama. It seems to be pretty much an amateur author's description of what she encountered when she moved there. It is not a "list," or a point-by-point explanation of requirements for living in Panama. Bit it is a description of her personal experiences as a new immigrant. She recounts stories of her activities and reactions to the daily events, such as shopping and hiring contract help and hooking up the internet. The best thing about this book is that it gives you a "warning" about what to expect, sort of a culture-shock awareness course - because life in Panama is NOT the same as life in the U.S. She writes as if she were having a conversation with you...

Several months ago my wife planned a Caravan trip to Panama as a recon mission for a possible retirement destination. She had already researched quite a bit and all that she had uncovered pretty much described Panama as pure Paradise. I, of course, wanted to learn more and came upon The Gringo Guide on Amazon. It was a real eye opener for both of us. The book is straight forward and well written. Ms. Vance has done an excellent job of describing the "real" Panama. Without it, I feel we would have been a bit shocked at what we encountered without forewarning. This is not to say Panama was a disappointment - on the contrary, it is a beautiful and unique country. But this book best prepared us for what to expect. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone deciding to travel there and who want a better feel of the people and the country.

Ms. Vance does a great job in setting one's expectations about living in Panama as an expat. She describes the culture, interacting with Panamanians in a business setting, and helped to educate us about the realities of living in a foreign country. I learned a great deal about how to somewhat "lower" my expectations by not doing the comparison thing between the U.S. and Panama. As she states in the book, "you'll beat your head against the wall...". The only reason I didn't give a 5 star rating is that I would've liked to have had some additional examples of the daily frustrations. However, overall, it's a great, quick read that will quickly give an overview of moving to Panama!

As one who has lived in the US, Panama and other places, I appreciated the accurate insights into what to expect (everything takes time!), the engaging voice and the accurate info. She tells it like it is. The lower rating is because, at least to me, the sense I got from the author was that she did not have much overseas experience. Some of the comments in ch. 1 about how you’ll be SO frustrated living there, how everyone eventually wants to run away screaming struck me as coming from a view of a person who had experienced only this culture. We lived there and while what the author describes is accurate, her reactions were not at all mine. I found the book discouraging and was glad it was not the text I had to rely on to prepare me.

Surprising that those who tormented her with the racial slurs themselves are the most vocal and loud to call others racists but have no empathy for others and torment and bully....being poor does not and should not make people cruel....to leave China to come to this great country and have to experience what she did was a shame but her inner strength and resolve , she got through it and became a success...well written

Throughout elementary school and high school, the author witnesses horrific behavior and is a victim of it herself. She grows accustomed (?) to being taunted as "Ching Chong" and "Chinaman," and witnesses other incidents which turn into beatings. Outside of school, in the ghetto, these beatings become robberies and sometimes murder.I am quite sure this tale is not a fantasy. I used to live in San Francisco with a friend from S.E. Asia. He had a wonderful Taiwanese friend. They were attacked by four black gangstas, who stole the Taiwanese boy's umbrella, beat him with it, and then ran off laughing.Black racism does not end there. Black hatred of whites has been documented in "White Girl Bleed a Lot" (5th Edition): The return of racial violence and how the media ignore it.Yet the "current wisdom" says that the word "racist" may only be used against white people, and we have seen a general orgy of that over the recent Trayvon Martin case.Perhaps the "current wisdom" should consider the words of another man:3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.--Matthew 7:1-5 KJVIn any case, the book is finally inspiring. Due to talent and plenty of hard work, the author makes it to Cornell, and then Stanford Law School, and is now pursuing a successful career as a lawyer. She was able to buy a home for her parents, far from the ghetto, and they now live and garden in peace.This is a short, sad, but inspiring read.

Author Ying Ma is a few years of my junior. Her memoir about her childhood in late 70s early 80s mainland China brought back many of my own memories.But what made her book profoundly meaningful is the fact she landed in American Ghetto, transformed her from a typical good girl to a bitter, angry and confrontational teenager. She did not find her freedom that American Dream promised until she struggled out of the Oakland Ghetto which showed a little girl the darkness, hatred and ugliness somewhat unique to American poverty.I landed in a beautiful campus of upstate NY. my American experience was bright, full of hope and reward for most part. My experience of darkness in America came as a shock in a totally different form as Ying’s Ghetto experience.But what this book conveyed is exactly this: you don’t come to America to be free automatically (though I thought so for so many years). American freedom is that no mater how ugly and seemingly hopeless your American experience is, there is an opportunity that ordinary individual can grasp and may break free.That, is still a big promise worth all the effort in this journey.That, is what we need to try very hard to preserve

Growing up in the San Francisco area, she finds that some American kids are not very welcoming, stealing her belongings and backstabbing her socially. Her experiences in the ghetto leave her with a bitter taste and yet she triumphs over her disappointments to attend a prestigious university and craft a meaningful career, gradually coming to respect the things that America does correctly.The tone of this book could easily have turned sour but Ying Ma's prose is comfortably readable, illuminating the "outsider's" experience of assimilating into a drastically different culture. She crafts an engrossing story around the facts of her personal experience which draw the reader in; I found myself wanting to apologize to her for the crappy treatment she received as a child at the hands of her new peers. Highly recommended!

This was a gift for my hockey-crazed four-year old nephew, along with the alphabet hockey book. He is always on the go and it is difficult to get him to focus on anything for a long period of time. However, after giving him these books, he immediately sat down and looked through the whole book! I like that it has a short rhyming sentence for the younger child, but there is more information on the side of each page to engage him in when he gets older.

This sturdy board book is colorful and fun especially for a 2 year-old boy in my family daycare who is obsessed with hockey right now. We keep it in a special place in our cozy book corner for him. Another 4-year old who is a hockey team drop-out at the moment is rebuilding his interest in playing and this book is a great help and encouragement. I gave them their own copy for Christmas and it has a place in the 2 year-old's crib at home.

my 2 year old has all of the alphabet ones and loves them. i thought this would be just as great, it skips some numbers as the numbers get higher which irks me. if you are trying to teach counting you cant skip numbers. otherwise it is great about sports information.

I was given Z is for Zamboni as a gift a few years ago. This book completes the set!!!! For the hockey lover in your family no matter the age!It's informative, interesting, and the illustrations are BEAUTIFUL! This is a hardcover book but it also comes in a Board book version that is a great gift for a toddler.

A beautifully illustrated book that my sons want to read over and over again.

Okay for younger kids who are learning to count, most appropriate for 5 year olds. Not much hockey information for older kids.

Great books and the board book version is great for younger kids. Highly recommended

As big hockey fans, this was such a great book for our son to learn numbers. It is sturdy and the illustrations are very sweet. Highly recommend it.

Monday I finished Lucky 666 and I saw a post on FB about the book. (This was a great read) This is an incredible tale of a crew with an impossible mission to do a photo reconnaissance of Bougainville Island in the Solomon Islands in 1943. If they are successful it will save the lives of countless US Marines. The mission was led by then (Captain) Jay Zeamer who along with Bombardier 2d Lt. Joseph Sarnoski would be awarded the Medal of Honor, the rest of the crew would be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross the second highest award for bravery and make Lucky 666 the most decorated air crew in US Air Force history. The mission was about 6 hours long, there was a dogfight with over 8 Japanese fighters for some 40 minutes, making it the longest in Air Force history. This is one story out millions of the Greatest Generation who stepped up in the dark days of WWII and saved the world from a Dark Age of Tyranny. This is my 3rd book by Drury and Clavin, these guys write a great book together and I hope they keep it up, what ever the blend or mix that gives them that certain something, well I hope they realize that doesn't come along very often and keep their collaboration going. I just bought another book by them without reading a review... thats the sign of good writing in my view.

The first half of the book drags a little with background info, but the second half really picks up speed. This is where the the author gets into the "impossible mission." The author rightly notes the difference between a medal and a court martial is sometimes a very fine line. In this case the hero well-earned the Congressional Medal of Honor he was awarded though his military discipline was lax and some orders were disobeyed. The medal rightfully prevailed over a court martial. I gave the book five stars based on the "impossible mission" portion of the book. It is suspenseful and well-written. Fans of aerial warfare will love this book.

Amazing story of bravery and heroic action. Learning the background of the strategy in the Pacific War was educational and enlightening. It took ingenuity and the guts of the Air Force and ground soldiers to defeat the Japanese while facing overwhelming odds. This mission was the most highly decorated mission in the history of the Air Force and a virtual hidden secret for over 60 years. Thanks to Tom Clavin and Bob Drury for bringing this to life. Would make a compelling movie!

I can easily see a defiant James Dean type or a young Harrison Ford playing the role of the fearless pilot flying the flying fortress and defying all the dangers Japanese air defenses posed as he took his crew into battle and daring reconnaissance flights over enemy territories. Clearly the pilot and his crew were cut from a special bolt of cloth that encouraged them to take on missions wiser men turned down since the odds of returning were so much not in their favor. Once again these airmen proved they were a part of the greatest generation. The insights on MacArthur were quite telling as were the same for Halsey and Nimitz. A very good read.

I loved this book. I reread the last several chapters immediately after finishing the book because it just tugs at your soul.The story pulls you in, entertains you, educates you and astonishes you at every turn. It is easy to forget, these events were real. Oh so young men where challenged by extraordinary events and committed their every effort and too often their lives to succeed.The authors crafted a great story into a wonderful book.

Great book and true story about B-17 crew members in the Pacific; the not so well known theater of the war. These guys had it much harder than those in the European theater of operations. Not to minimize their contribution to the war effort, they have my complete respect. However, the guys in the Pacific got all the older aircraft, hand-me-downs, etc. and won the war in their assigned area of the world, too. Again, an amazing story!Anyone wanting to learn more about this theater of the war and what the aircrew went through, this is a first-hand account and vivid in detail.

We in America are blessed with those who persevere and don’t give up regardless of the odds they face. This story of Jay Zeamer is one example of someone who danced to his own drummer and didn’t give up thus making a major contribution to our victories against the Japanese in the Pacific of WWII.

Fascinating story of the air war in the south Pacific area near Australia and New Guinea/Papua before the Allies got rolling. Lots of action and excellent word pictures of what it was like to be there. Lots of action. Very informative for me to better understand that part of WWII. And provides a different perspective on General MacArthur than I learned in high school history. This is the story of (to me) a previously unknown American hero!I enjoyed this book a lot and recommend it to anyone with a mild interest in WWII history.
