Crusader King by Susan Peek caught my eye the first time I saw its cover. In the first place, as a cradle Catholic I've heard a lot about the Crusades but never remember studying them in detail even at Georgetown University. So Susan had me hooked before I even opened the book.At the beginning of the book, I quickly discovered that much of the book was factual, based on actual people who lived when the author said they did and did what she claims. So now, I could barely put the book down--I'm just a historical fiction junkie when the author goes to the trouble to bring the main characters to life--3-dimensionly and believably. Ms. Peek did just that and for the next 10 days I had to sneak in a chapter or two while still taking care of all my other duties and responsibilities as a husband, father, and grandfather.The main thing I liked about Crusader King is that her two heroes are credible and highly likable. I couldn't help but root for them harder with each new page. Moreover, her villains left me seething with anger because from the beginning they posed huge problems for the main characters, and they became more and more hateful as the book progressed.The book is a great read, and I highly recommend it for youth and adult readers. Not only is it entertaining, but it explains a lot about a part of history about which many of us have little or no understanding.

4.5 stars for a compelling story about an inspiring young king during a turbulent time and place in history. Made king at age 13, surrounded by enemies without as well as within his kingdom, and dealing with the unimaginable effects of leprosy, this young man's steadfast faith in God and his inspirational courage have left an indelible mark on my heart. King Baldwin's best friend, Theodore, and the Templar Sir Geoffrey were also well done, so well done, in fact, that two final scenes brought tears to my eyes. I couldn't unreservedly give this book 5 stars, though, because a few instances of slang and modern words pulled me out of the 12th century with a bit of a jar. Young readers will find this book fascinating, fast-paced, and unforgettable.

My kids love Susan Peek's books. My teenage daughter asked for this one and "The King's Prey" for Christmas. She's already finished them by New Year's day, and my son is now reading them. They both love the stories, and especially how Susan Peek brings the saints to life. My daughter has said several times that she likes these more than some other "saint books" because the saints seem more like normal people who she can relate to, rather than some idyllic and unrealistic "fairy tale".

A great story well told! I really enjoyed this book, and I was happy to pass it along to my teenage daughter who has been enjoying it as well. I don't know much about the accuracy of the historical details, but I found it refreshing, bringing the Crusaders to life in such a way that they came across as more than blood thirsty mercenaries. History is replete with amazing real life stories, some heroic and some villainous and many a mix as this book shows.

Loved this book. It's factual but not dry history. Actually very timely also since the world is still fighting this same war. Very well done. Have already recommended it to family and friends.

This was a well written book. Entertaining and easy to keep up with the story. i have read other books by this author and have found all were good.

I really enjoyed this book even though I'm not particularly attracted to this period of history. It's very easy reading, and younger or older readers will definitely appreciate this story. I was quite moved by the end and did not expect it. This book makes a great gift!

I wish that I'd read this book several years ago, as it would have saved me a lot of trial and a few errors. Even though I've done fair amount of framing myself over the years, I picked up new ideas on almost every page. This book tells everything you need to know about mounting most kinds of art - photo's, paintings, drawings, pastels, cloth, collectables, etc. with lots of useful hints for handling out of the ordinary items. Details provided on cutting all kinds and all shaped of mats with a wide range of tools, glazing, metal and wood frames, hanging, and even packing the finished product for moving or mailing. Janean Thompson provides lots of detail, helpful hints, and wise safety suggestions (handling mat cutter blades and cut glass warrants careful attention to sharp edges). This is a very practical reference for just about anyone who wants to save some of the expense of framing and have all the pleasure of completing it themselves. She even tells how to build several types of simple and inexpensive wooden frames from scratch. The only part that seems a bit brief is the few pages devoted to making elaborate wooden frames, but I'm OK with that. Her advice about finding wholesalers willing to provide materials and cutting for open backed frames is right on track. Cutting and assembling an elaborate frame are two steps where it pays to use equipment that's not in the average home workshop. If you are looking to do your own framing, this probably provides all the information that you need. If you are looking to build frames for a business, you may want additional information, but this would still be a good read. Highly recommended.

Lost interest. Gave the book to my sister who is an artist and she has more use for it than me.

This is simply the best book currently out there for the do-it-yourself framer. In particular, after looking at dozens of books in libraries and bookstores, it's the only book I found that really gives satisfactory attention to archival considerations, pros and cons of different methods of mounting artwork, and protection of the framed materials from moisture in the environment (a real area of concern if you're living in an extremely high-humidity region, as I am!). After an hour or so of browsing through the book, I already felt I had gotten my money's worth in answered questions and useful information. Everything the beginner needs to know, plus a little more in-depth information for those of us who have already learned the basics. Recommended!

Extensive instruction on matting pictures for personal to archival matting. Practically anything you would need to know about matting. Not a lot about framing pictures but a very basic start at simple framing near the end of the book.

As a total beginner, I thought this book was very strong on presenting information about materials and archival vs. non-archival and such. However, I found the author's instructions on specific techniques to be lacking...I often had to read them many times just to understand a fairly simple procedure.

I found it to be presented in a logical and structured manner, yet written in a light and entertaining tone, peppered with a large number of photographs and useful diagrams. The inclusion of use and coverage of both digital and analog equipment is bound to keep the intimidation factor for new life stage technicians and casual users under control. Lastly, a large emphasis on safety and the hilarious diagrams are hard to miss and should keep everyone safe.

Great read for anybody working with sound equipment. I would also encourage leaders of mid to large size choirs to take a look at the chapters pertaining to sound checks,it would make the sound engineer's work that much easier. This was not an easy book to write. I started the book in the summer of 2017, but quickly put it on hold because reliving what I had survived was very painful for me. Although, I will say, staying in a relationship with a narcissist was not an option for me, because staying would have been even more painful than leaving. I was becoming physically and emotionally unwell as the years passed by. In December of 2017, I felt like God was pushing me to write this book. I spoke at length with my brother, who said, "Laura, when the Lord asks you to do something, you can't say 'no'." I prayed about it, then I hibernated for four months, mostly on weekends, and wrote until I was depleted. I understand there are women and men out there who have been through even more abuse than I withstood. I hope you find the courage to speak up, too. If anything, perhaps Ugly Love will help you understand what narcissism is and how it can effect you. What you decide to do about staying or leaving the partnership is up to you. I've met men and women who have stayed, and I've spoken at length with those who left. I can tell you this: I have not met one person who regrets leaving after the drama of the initial departure is over.I am pulling for you no matter what you decide. I originally just downloaded the sample, and thought OMG....how could I have been so stupid? I realise now I wasn't stupid...I was just sucked in by typical narcissistic behaviour masquerading as love. Love doesn't rant and rage and rave, shame and scorn for years and years. Love doesn't seek to limit your potential, keep you small...and love certainly doesn't a week before Christmas in a fit of rage, text "I quit." That was the gift - that and this book and the story shared that was so relatable - so me. Looking forward to reading the chapters on divorce so I can prepare for the road ahead. A great resource for anyone in a relationship with a narcissist. I also recommend, "getting the love you want."

I guess it easier to get away from Narcissist if your not old and disabled. When you don’t have money for healing it a lot different. All the things she suggests is great if you have a good job.

What I liked about Ugly Love was leaning to understand narcissism. While reading Laura's book, I was able to relate to so many of her circumstances and and experiences --- and realized I have known several narcissists in my lifetime. I now know how to recognize them, and not accept their behavior and tendencies. I'm thankful for the book because I'm better equipped to handle these people, and have accepted that it is okay to walk away.

Anytime I buy a book like this for self help I want to see atleast one thing that will help. It is well put together and I am going to purchase the Anger Trap as well by Les Carter. I thank Laura for expressing her truth to help others.

This book is a must read for any person whether you be male or female going through a narcissistic relationship! Your eyes will be opened along with knowing you can and will survive

I want to give this book more stars. I truly do. We are HUGE fans of Kate DiCamillo. We have literally every book she has written on our shelves, which is why I didn't hesitate to pre-order this one on Amazon. However, I was immediately disappointed to see a character prominently smoking a cigar on one of the pages. The smoking/smoke is described in the text as well. There doesn't need to be a reference to tobacco use in a children's book; from a child's point of view, the reference was completely superfluous to this story. I find its inclusion by my favorite children's author totally irresponsible and disappointing.The story itself, like the Leroy Ninker spin-off, is a higher reading level (at least 1-2 levels) that Mercy Watson. It is incredibly moving at times (I shed a few tears reading a passage), but in a dark, heavy way that I needed to explain to/discuss with my grandchildren. It is less organized, with lots of unrelated scenes including familiar characters. While Kate DiCamillo has never been one to shelter our children from all of life's realities, it is considerably less light-hearted than Leroy Ninker. While Francine's discouraged soul-searching goes on too long for a children's book, the message of determination/perseverance is appreciated at the end. There are books my grandchildren pick up regularly. This one isn't one they (or I, sadly) have asked to read again. Gr1-3.

I purchased this for my five year old who has loved all of Kate DiCamillo's books. He enjoyed it, though I don't think it is his favorite of her books. However, as a parent it is definitely my favorite to discuss with my child. The main character, who is very self assured and competent in previous appearances, has a traumatic experience early in the book and struggles to regain her self confidence. The idea that adults can encounter this kind of setback and/or experience an extended bout of self doubt is one that I had not yet seen treated so well in a book targeted for this age group. I think it is very useful to have an accessible book that introduces the concept to younger readers, especially ones who might have observed an adult struggling in real life. The ultimate message is encouraging and uplifting.

All of the Mercy Watson and Tales from Deckawoo Drive from Kate DiCamillo are the PERFECT reading level for my 6 year old. She started reading these when she was 5. Great beginning chapter books! Clean and respectful content, silly stories, good word repetition, opportunities to expand vocabulary and practice intonation...we sit and read together and giggle for hours!

Lots of figurative language. My 7 years old had to really learn and guess what it meant. Good for learning vocabulary and meanings of some figurative language. Might be a little hard for some kids to remember specific details due to a language.

What can I say? These books are endearingly written with a touch of insight to the human condition that responses with all ages. I'm so glad we found this series. My 5 and 7 year old grandchildren love them, as do I.

My grandkids love these books by Kate DiCamillo. They are funny and the stories repeat a phrase often. The kids chant 'Toast with a great deal of butter" at just the right part of the storywith delight!

My grandchildren, ages 10, 8, 7 and 6, really enjoyed this book, They liked the screechy sounds of the raccoon, and the lively character of Francine Poulet. The older children could read it by themselves, and the younger children enjoyed listening to the story and finding out why the raccoon could say Francine's name. Kate DiCamillo does it again with another hilarious book filled with quirky characters and zany situations. She's such a clever writer! My 10 year-old son had a blast reading this book out loud together.
