When Juli moved in across the street from Bryce, just before second grade, he found the feisty, friendly girl overwhelming and off-putting, and tried to distance himself from her but then eighth grade rolls around. Within the framework of their complex, intermittently antagonistic and affectionate rapport, the author shapes insightful portraits of their dissimilar families. Among the most affecting supporting characters are Bryce's grandfather, who helps Juli spruce up her family's eyesore of a yard after Bryce makes an unkind remark about the property, and Juli's father, a deep-feeling artist who tries to explain to his daughter how a painting becomes more than the sum of its parts. Juli finally understands this notion after she discovers the exhilaration of sitting high in a beloved tree in her neighborhood ("The view from my sycamore was more than rooftops and clouds and wind and colors combined"). Although the relationship between Bryce's grandfather and his own family remains a bit sketchy, his growing bond with Juli is credibly and poignantly developed. A couple of coincidences are a bit convenient, but Van Draanen succeeds in presenting two entirely authentic perspectives on the same incidents without becoming repetitious. With a charismatic leading lady kids will flip over, a compelling dynamic between the two narrators and a resonant ending (including a clever double entendre on the title), this novel is a great deal larger than the sum of its parts. I just finished this book today. Alternating chapters are told from the perspective of the two main characters. I enjoyed reading how the same events came across to the two characters. I was engaged throughout most of the book, with the exception of a couple of chapters - which turned out to be pretty important! I teach 5th grade, and this was on the district's mandated book list for read alouds, but I don't think it's appropriate for elementary students. It's more geared toward middle school. I will put this in my library, but I won't announce it. In a couple of years when the boy/girl stuff really starts, then they will be ready for it. It is based on 8th graders, after all.

Reading with my son before I let him watch the movie. He is 10, he loves reading it, it seems to bring out a whole personality I have never seen in his reading, the story has him wanting to read it as much as possible. Its a great story, in the 2 person point of views its unique, and has a great theme, heart to heart, and a great truth to life. At 10 his love for the book says a lot to me, great writing. Great book. Only need the to get the physical book now, as I got the kindle addition, and now wish I had gotten a copy to keep on the shelf.

Juli Baker meets Bruce Loski, when his family moved into the neighbourhood. They were both due to start second grade. She is instantly mesmerised and smitten by his blue eyes and believes that it is love. However like most boys his age Bryce never saw it that way, and makes it a point to avoid her. Juli becomes obsessed with Bryce and stalks him throughout their childhood. However this changes after some incidents that make Juli fall out of love for Bryce. Roles have reversed in this case with Bryce starts to fall for Juli, whilst she tries avoid him.Hilarious and fascinating read, they only downside is that there is no sequel to this story which leaves the reader wondering what's going to happen next.

I love this book, and have taught it to 5th graders, who also loved it. It takes a little bit to figure out what is going on, as it is written from the perspective of the boy and girl, which alternate by chapter.

I bought the kindle version of this book shortly before the movie release. I saw a preview for the movie and it looked like something I would enjoy watching. I then found out that it was an adaptation of this book, so I decided to read the book first. The plot and themes for this book are certainly not original, but the characters are developed well, and the story has a nice flow to it. The few negative reviews always complain about the switching of perspectives between the two main characters. I found that to be the most unique quality to the book. It's really what separates it from the other books with similar stories, and it allows you to identify with both characters equally. What I love most about this book is it's sentimentality. It was written primarily as a children's book, but I think that as an adult I actually get more out of it, because it takes me back in time to when I was that age. This has become one of my favorite books of all time, as well as one of my favorite movies, as the movie adaptation was done very well despite the change in the time period(the book is modern times, the movie is set in the 50's). I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

This book will make you cringe, laugh, and cry. It will break your heart in some ways and then mend it again. It will make you reflect on yourself and your values in the most beautiful way. A definite must read.

I bought this for my 8th grade son as part of his required school reading. My husband and I both ended up reading it as well and loved it!

My 6th grade daughter LOVED this book & gave it to one of her classmates as a birthday gift.

About the Author

Radley Balko is an investigative journalist and reporter at the Washington Post. He currently writes and edits The Watch, a reported opinion blog that covers civil liberties and the criminal justice system. He is the author of the 2013 book Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America's Police Forces, which has won widespread acclaim, including from the Economist, New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly, and was named one of the best investigative journalism books of the year by the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University. Since 2006, Balko has written dozens of pieces on Hayne, West, and Mississippi's forensics disaster. His January 2013 investigation, "Solving Kathy Mabry's Murder: Brutal 15-Year-Old Crime Highlights Decades-Long Mississippi Scandal," was one of the most widely read Huffington Post articles of 2013. In 2015, Balko was awarded the Innocence Project's Journalism Award, in part for his coverage in Mississippi.Tucker Carrington is the director of the George C. The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist is by turns engaging, depressing, exciting, and enraging—and a monumental work of investigative storytelling about how junk science polluted justice for a generation in one state.In the hands of lesser writers, this would have simply been a story of good and evil, of heroes and villains. But Balko and Carrington paint a much more nuanced picture, an almost Southern gothic tale. While the titular physician and dentist are exposed for the quacks and frauds they are, the system in which they operated isn't cast as a simple morality tale. Path dependency in the common law (the coroner being an office that traces back to medieval England), the ghosts of the Civil War and Jim Crow, well-intended US Supreme Court decisions, and political factionalism combine to set the stage for a generation-long fraud on the people of Mississippi. Most of all, Balko and Carrington highlight the terrible incentives facing everyone in the state's death investigation and criminal justice system, telling stories of justice gone horribly wrong.Balko and Carrington have penned a gripping page-turner of an expose that shows both the best and the worst of mankind, and the power of institutions to look past and even condone the morally indefensible. So instead, Balko and Carrington have selected one little microcosm from a very broad potential palette of connivance, and warped, perverted, distorted applications of pseudo-science and presented it in a concise, interesting and valuable book. Stories chosen from a veritable rogues' gallery of distilled garbage issuing forth from an imaginative "Chuckie" of the dental profession (Michael West) and a blood-sucking barber-surgeon cum pathologist, Steven West, aided by prosecutors and DAs, "The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist" illustrate the enormity of the problem.By this point in 21st century America, only the most inveterate optimist or intellectually besotted citizen could imagine that the legislative, judicial and enforcement bodies in this country maintain any reasonable degree of fealty to the ideal presented to the general public. The arc of destiny may bend toward justice, but it will evidently only converge with it in another space-time continuum.The corruption of our democratic ideals may have reached it's apex with the election of Donald Trump to the presidency, but it most certainly didn't begin in 2016. Balko and Carrington take care to describe the history of ,and oftentimes muddled distinction between, a coroner (an elected and not necessarily medically qualified and/or competent official) and a board certified physician expert in medical forensics. That's a core distinction and serious problem featured in this book.The plot line in "The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist" is constructed on the stories of two black men of the "lower classes" in rural Mississippi. Lest the reader think that the judicial and law enforcement rush to judgement (one based on prejudice, racism, convenience, and expediency - all buttressed with bogus claims on the uniqueness of bite marks and assembly line quality, dry-lab, slipshod, negligent autopsies proffered by avaricious, egomaniacal snake oil salesmen, Drs. West and Hayne) is confined to benighted rural pockets of the Deep South, consider the famous case of Steven Avery, a white man from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Avery served 18 years in prison on a wrongful conviction for sexual assault and attempted murder. He was fully exonerated by DNA evidence, as was also (eventually) the case for the men featured in this book. Seeking restitution (if that's even possible), Avery took legal action against the county. Not to be outdone, law enforcement pulled a Trump and counter-attacked: in 2005, Avery was arrested on charges of murdering a local photographer and was convicted in 2007. It was a frame-up relying in large part on pseudo-scienc, just like the multiple false convictions in Mississippi and elsewhere. Take it as a given that the Great Panjandrum propelling the cases in "Cadaver King" (the distinguished Mr. Hood) has yet to acknowledge either his own perfidy and his manifest and deliberate ignorance of his responsibilities as an attorney general (and he's a Democrat!)What Balko/Carrington and Ricciardi/Demos and many, many others convincingly convey is that this is a "world gone wrong". The fact that no meaningful changes have occurred despite intense publicity conveys the fact that those who write the laws and those that enforce them don't care about the perversions of justice they perpetuate, nor do they seemingly grasp that the two-tiered judicial system (you get the best justice your money can buy) is untenable. That conclusion is made explicit in the book and in Balko's many columns in "The Washington Post". He and other investigative journalists, concerned lawyers (there are a few) and a few "folks" are fighting a quixotic battle against "people bending broken rules" (Bob Dylan's phrase). Even the recent involvement of the formidable Koch organization in sentencing reform has hit the impenetrable Van Allen Belt of highly energized, reactionary, corporatist and fear-fueled populist opposition.The Balko/Carrington book is very well written and comprehensively referenced, especially as the Charlatan Kings are extremely litigious. So, every claim must be (and has been) carefully researched and referenced. The glaring problem with the book is the absence of an index. A bit more could be offered on the dubious legal background (e.g., the Frye decision) that allows introduction of non-science nonsense as alleged fact. As noted by the authors, leaving this decision to the judicial system (current practice) begs for the type of abuse detailed in this book and assures its continuation into the indefinite future. In other words, many more innocents will be incarcerated and many more "game over" decisions will be made by the ossified and self-important judicial mandarin "deciders". In short, many falsely convicted citizens will rot in jail because that's the system.As it happens, the constellation of forces favoring swift, "certain", retributive punishment is in ascendance. Efforts by Balko and company appeal to the converted: can you imagine enough open minded legislators and members of the legal/judicial/enforcment professions taking on a system that so many of them profit from? Unlike the legions of falsely convicted and later redeemed heroes of 19th century novels, swashbuckling crusaders for justice aren't on the near horizon. It will take a case of a truly monstrous nature suffered by a popular "People Magazine" cover star (Jay-Z?) to focus public attention on the problem. Having vivid memories of Jesse "the Body" Ventura ,professional wrestler, I expected a brash, highly opinionated book. I was surprised by the sensible,well-thought-out political positions and ideas in this book.I believe that he was 100% accurate in his 2000 assessment of George W. Bush as well as his statement that elected officials all too often serve the party instead of the people.The advantage for incumbents and the never ending campaign cycle for reelection are also valid observations.Jesse Ventura did provide some interesting ideas-unicameral state legislature,national sales tax(looks a lot like the Fair Tax of this current Presidential election season), 4 year term for Senators and Congressmen, tort reform, trade with Cuba, repealing the 16th Amendment.I don't agree with all of Ventura's positions, but he has a thoughtful, no-nonsense attitude about tackling the political problems that have only gotten worse since the printing of this book! A lot of his ideas are bold and worth a long look.

If you can get beyond the hairdo's of Clinton and company, and dig for real substance than the only logical choice to lead our country is a true American like Jessie Ventura. Unconventional Yes But Blunt and No B/S . Why waste time on pussy footing around. Time Is short! His wisdom may humble you! One thing is for sure.. he is not afraid to go to the Mat!

Great audio book, Ventura is a fantastic speaker and I happen to agree with a lot of his views. Real good listening for a road trip in your car.

This second book by the Governor of Minnesota gives his viewpoints on current events.He wants a unicameral legislature for his state. Will a single chamber automatically reduce voter apathy and the influence of special interests? Instead of limiting terms, limit the meeting time of the legislature so they'll only concentrate on important items. They should spend most of their time with the citizens, not the lobbyists. Alexis DeTocqueville's "Democracy in America" explained why there are two chambers. A yearly elected Assembly to respond to the people's wants; a triannually elected Senate to provide a more farsighted view as to the people's needs. The Senate would also impeach judges, state officials, and the governor as needed. The one state with a unicameral legislature may also have an egalitarian and homogenous population with similar interests.The cure for too-powerful representatives is simple: select committees and chairman by lot. Once these elections can't be fixed the power of the special interests will be greatly reduced.The correct campaign reform law is to ban all broadcast political advertising; they are either lies or half-truths. Printed literature will last long enough to check the promises against the achievements. Candidates will not have to sell their souls to the devils of special interests. The next step should be to ban any contributions from corporate entities; they are not real people. This will return campaigns to a very level playing field.In "Tort Reform: Civilizing Our Civil Courts" he asks why so many lawyers are politicians. That was answered by DeTocqueville in Volume I. That's like asking why so many people in rural areas go hunting.In "Tax Reform" he complains about the income tax, and high property taxes. (Isn't an income tax just a type of property tax?) To lower property taxes you must either give localities and counties part of the state sales tax, or part of the income tax. You can't do anything else!There are many other topics covered in this book. Most are common-sense proposals that are unusual to hear from a politician; but J.V. is not an ordinary politician. You should read the chapter on "Education".

Two things upon which Mr. Ventura elaborates are common knowledge: 1) Government is completely out of touch with "we, the people." and 2) The media distort, rather than simply report, the news; like the government itself, the media has become totally self-serving. However, Ventura's numerous examples from his own experiences reveal THE GIGANTIC EXTENT of the corruptedness, which is so shocking it's unbelieveable. A good example is how the media can completely slander someone's reputation using a complete fabrication, no sources even needed. However, this is permissible under the guise of "protecting the sources."This book has fired me up so much for the hope that a socio-political revolution might take place within the generation.Very few issues he discusses I disagree with. I especially support his anti-prohibition views (regarding prostitution, marijuana, etc.) and I get the impression most Americans, certainly of the young, open-minded generation, would agree. I admire him one thousand percent for being one of the few politicians who is vocal in his decree that the War on Drugs has failed, and particularly, in his call for marijuana legalization. He declares, I believe quite rightly, that less prohibition actually LOWERS crime, and he offers sound testimony for this opinion with his own personal account of his visit to Amsterdam's Red Light District, which he says has no more crime than the average white, middle-class suburban neighborhood. I've heard the same thing from other people who've been to Amsterdam (and purchased pot from the "Cannabis Coffee Shops").Most important is his cry for the American public to break out of its current indifference. He reminds us that political corruption only flourishes when we lose touch with our system, thereby submitting our will to our officials' own ends.I don't know how many others feel as passionately about this as I do, but I sincerely believe every American should read this book.

This book is not as good as Wolff's "Occupy the Economy."It lays out the same basic proposal--worker controlled workplaces--but treats it in a more academic and stuffy way.In "Occupy the Economy," Wolff is on fire. He not only explains his positions, he advocates for them. He gives a wealth of history and fact to support his conclusions.But here, in "Democracy at Work," he confines himself to an abstract, almost soporific, presentation.This is a shame, because his ideas have real merit.Wish I could give five stars, but after "Occupy the Economy," this one's a letdown.

Richard Wolff writes with a clarity and ease I've often found to be lost in the translated works of others. He begins the book by outlining what the conventional Cold War definition of Capitalism and (State) Socialism were, and how he differs of opinion, instead focusing on the workers' right to control their workplace directly, on building an economic democracy. Throughout the book things such as the Soviet Union, Occupy Wall Street, the Great Depression, and the Great Recession get referenced frequently to help contextualize objects of discussion. Part 3 of the book is dedicated to how one might build and the principals on which one might operate such a structure, which Wolff calls WSDEs (Workers' Self-Directed Enterprises).Overall the tone is very reminiscent of Anton Pannekoek's "Workers' Councils", if with a more updated context and a somewhat stronger emphasis on direct democracy for the workers versus Pannekoek's emphasis on councils; though the two concepts can certainly intertwine and coexist.An excellent read, especially if you're looking for something of Libertarian Socialism.

Before leaving the US on a long trip, I downloaded two books to read in my spare time. After reading Robert Reich's book "Saving Capitalism", I was left with a perplexing but simple question. How..... and perhaps more important, Why?"Democracy at Work", the second book, provided a much more sensible approach to the same problem. We don't need to save capitalism, we need to replace it with something better. Richard Wolff describes a perfectly feasible possibility for doing just that. While the WSDE was probably not possible on a large scale or in a wide variety of situations in days gone by, modern education and communications technologies not only make this possible today, but inevitable.

This book is divided into 2 parts. The first half is a shallow and general rant against capitalism, where the author calls socialism and communism as a form of public administrative capitalism; he sees these government models as fundamentally unfair since the employees (the producers of surplus value) don't call the shots. The second half is an incoherent proposal where employees are the directors of the companies they work for; but in this proposal he provides no solution for any of the challenging cases... how to handle build vs buy (ie, a cleaning company), or how to handle education (it's still a government operation?). This is a short (tedious), religious book -- either you believe that employee directed enterprises are the solution to all the worlds problems, or you don't. The book provides no real evidence or thoughtful discussion of why it might be a good model for government and commerce.

Wolff presents a very logical and compelling case (as always) for a more "social" democracy. While his arguments are straight forward with many good examples, the years he spent immersed in academia are obvious on every page; meaning, expect to use the left side of your brain more than you're used to. That said, this is an important work and one that presents a viable solution to a major problem with 21st Century society.The idea that the majority of working people have become wage slaves and spend most the best hours of the day (and most of the week) working for companies in which they have no stock in, or say in how they are run, is unacceptable.In an ideal world, Wolff would have a cabinet position in the Executive Branch of government.

I'm a big fan of Professor Wolff and this is no exception. That being said I only recommend it as an introduction for people to anti-capitalist and far left views. If you've watched Wolff for a bit and are decently read on the subject you can skip this book.

This book does a good job of explaining the problem of capitalism, including state capitalism (misnamed as socialism).Essentially, it's very undemocratic, and tightly controlled by a few at the top, whether private sector or the state. It spendsa lot of time, too much in my opinion, talking & reiterating the problems of capitalism, and not even close enough time discussing the options of cures for the problems. It only briefly touches on coops and democratically workers directed enterprises, including leaving out vital details about Mondragon in Spain and other working options, leaving the reader hanging.Rather than spending so much time on private and state capitalism, and their failures, spending the majority of the time and focus on the democratic alternatives of worker owned and directed enterprises would make this a much stronger book.Thus, I gave it a 4 rather than a 5 star rating. We need to know and develop the alternatives to economic capitalism to be better able to replace it. I hope Richard Wolff will maintain his focus on this in a future book.

This book was very helpful for concentrating on a single topic. However, the explanations for the answers were sometimes vague and not beneficial. Also, the questions in these practice tests are easier than questions I've done in other books.

This book is more like a fairy tail book! After three times GRE test, and reading more than 25+ GRE books, I can say the questions in this book, are not even close to the real GRE test. Yes, as long as you are in this book's ecosystem, the questions and the answers seem good, but we have a real GRE test which is a very harsh test. We do not have time to think about the soft long stories mentioned in this book. We need a fast, practical and reliable method (faster than real time!). If you compare "Official GRE Verbal Reasoning Practice Questions" you can see the differences. Even the tests which have been mentioned in Official GRE Verbal Reasoning Practice Questions, are simpler than the tests you will see in real test day.I respect the author of this book, but this is not for someone who wants to get a high score.

What I really like about the practices is that they tell why the correct answer is correct and the wrong answers are wrong. Why I purchased: My book was stolen from me at school and I needed a quick replacement. This was an acceptable substitute for the book we were using in class, so I was seeking to find the least expensive version just to replace my old book for the rest of the year. Not even paying $5, this book would be an excellent substitute for the one that I had been stolen from me. I barely lost any time with prime shipping and the quality is very good.What I love: It was marked as "very good" and it definitely is! There is nothing that impairs the book's details, and for such a low price, I'm actually shocked that it is in such nice condition! The eighth edition has everything that I need and isn't too different from my old book. I really can't believe I got it for less than $5.What I don't love: I have zero complaints related to this product, as it came when it was supposed to, does its job perfectly, and was so inexpensive.Conclusion: I recommend purchasing from this seller! Everything was described accurately and was at such a decent price. Thanks for the book!

I rented it used and the MyMathLab access code was not usable. I will have to spend another $90 just for online access to complete required assignments. The access code part of the title needs to be removed once "used" or "rent" is selected.

Coming from a student who excelled in his trigonometry class, and uses trig frequently in real world applications, this book is absolutely awful. The explanations are vague and unhelpful, and the only reason I was able to get through the homework at times was because of previous experience in this area of mathematics. I noticed other students in my class having trouble with the first few chapters due to such issues, which is a shame, as they are key to building a solid foundation moving in to calculus. As other reviewers have stated, there are indeed types of problems that are never explained, and the book is also sorely lacking in explanations of derivations of trigonometric identities (which are really quite easy to explain and helps greatly towards actually understanding the math). Additionally, I found more than a few errors in the answer key. Considering that this is an elementary trigonometry book, this is unacceptable. Just for laughs, I did look for an errata sheet, but couldn't find any. I've compared this edition a bit to the 10th edition and that one doesn't look too much better in terms of explanations, but hopefully the errors present in this edition have been fixed. In the end, you are probably buying this book because it is required for your class, so most of these reviews serve more as a warning than anything. But if you are trying to learn trigonometry by yourself, there are much better resources out there.

I first learned trigonometry 26 years ago, and am currently a tutor in a Tutoring Center where math and English are the primary calls for our assistance. We started using this book on Trigonometry by Lial, Hornsby and Schneider last year, and it has been a real aid to all of us.The chapters are designed with brief overviews, 'Chapter Openers', at the beginning of each. There are sample exercises in the explanations, as well as exercises in the problem sets keyed to specific application of examples. There are summary exercises that give review of mixed concepts, pull-quote boxes (here called 'Function Boxes') to highlight the reference aspect of the text, and useful chapter reviews to the same.One thing that stands out about this text from the one I used so many years ago is the colour aspect. There are pictures, multi-coloured graphs and illustrations, and a general feel to the book that makes it visually worthwhile to look at. This book also takes advantage of the increasing sophistication of calculators - again, back when I took trigonometry, there were tables of data in the back for looking things up, since calculators (such as they were) had only add/subtract/multiply/divide functions.The chapters go in a fairly standard pattern for trigonometry. Chaptes progress from basic Trigonometric Functions, defining triangular and angular ideas. This continues more in depth with Acute Angles and Right Angles, then proceeds to Circular Functions, introducing Radian Measures in for good measure. The fourth chapter introduces graphing ideas for the circular functions (sine, cosine, etc.), while the sixth chapter introduces the idea of the inverse circular and trigonometric functions. Other chapters include trigonometric identities (this always seemed to me to be like geometry or logic using trig functions), vectors, complex numbers, polar equations, exponential and logarithmic functions. Many of these concepts have direct application in engineering and other sciences.This book is also geared for students who will be advancing on to calculus, and gives marginal notes on how trigonometry is used in calculus (so as to pre-empt the question, 'when am I ever going to use this?').Actually, I found trigonometry to be among the more enjoyable math courses I ever took; together with geometry, it confirmed an early love of the discovery of patterns and symmetry in the very fabric of existence. This book reminds me of those early days of exploring ideas, and it is a pleasure to share these same ideas with new students via this text.

This is just the text book without any mymathlab access. They really need to be clear about that in the description. There is no access code anywhere on it that would apply to a different program either. I have no idea why it costs more than the other books.

This book is just fine as a trig book, but it follows the current trend of greedy publishers squeezing students for extra money by convincing professors to use HORRIBLE online content, with a one time use access code in the book. This forces students to buy new or pay the publisher a fee to access the online content. I cannot stress strongly enough how awful this online content is. It is a very poorly made flash interface and it makes doing homework much more time consuming and frustrating. When was the last time you needed a decimal approximation for the measure of an angle correct to seven digits? That is just one of many stupid issues I had with the homework they provide. You will spend more time trying to figure out how to properly input your answer than you will spend finding the answer using trig. Even my professor agreed that the content was ridiculous after some questions from the class.

This journal (diary/life list) is great. Well laid out and useful.It is exactly what was advertised - a place for checklists and keeping notes of personal sightings. It was never meant to be a field guide or ID book, reviewers giving this a low rating for not having photos clearly did not understand its purpose.However, where It could be improved is the quality of the paper used for the cover. This book is meant to be used for years and years - to hold one's LIFE LIST. But the cover seems rather flimsy and I doubt that it will hold up well with use over many years. The inside pages are great - clearly meant for use, but I think the cover should have been laminated and/or a bit thicker stock.I rated this as a 5, but the cover issues makes me wish I could rate it a 4.5. Were the cover better, it would be a clear 5.

Exactly what I was looking for!It has three different sections for logging your records with room for 32 "add-in" species for future splits of species. The first section is a by taxonomic order. It has five species per page with room to write location, date, and notes. The next section a straight checklist with 5 boxes (still can't figure out why five boxes but it could be helpful). The last section is chronological order of life-list. It's just numbered with room for you write the species. A very cool feature for life's latest additions.It has a nice cover, a little elastic band to keep it closed and quality pages.

Love my Sibley Life List book. There are 3 sections.....first a section with species and a place to write when and where you saw it with a space for notes and observations . Next is the checklist section where you just check off what species you've seen. There are 6 columns for check marks which had me wondering why at first. Then I thought of some reasons why you might want multiple columns. If you're doing a big year, you could use one column for that. Even if you're not doing a big year, you could separate out your sightings by year. For now, I'm just using one column. The last section is a numbered blank list where you write in the species you've seen. If you're worried about repeating a species, look back to your checklist to see if you've recorded it. This has prevented me from writing duplicates more than once.The index is arranged a little differently than field guides. Instead of looking up American Crow under C for crow, it's under A for American Crow. All birds are listed by their proper names, so you will need to know this while using the index. My only complaint is that the print in the index is a light gray and a little hard for me to read.

Would have been a 4 star review but I ordered two of these field guides and they both came with about 30 pages that were bound upside down. I would urge you not to buy this sight unseen - would suggest finding it in a bookstore to verify that, unlike mine, it was bound correctly.

When the book was delivered today, I was so excited I started filling it in immediately! It was exactly what I wanted. Then I got to the checklist. Pages 241-252 are in upside down!!! :( I had already written in it, so I guess I am stuck with it; but what a disappointment.

I'm reviewing as a beginner birder. I have Sibley's first edition for western birds. THIS IS NOT A FIELD GUIDE; it is a keep-in-your-car-or-at-home companion to your field notebook/pad. Record in your field notebook/pad then transcript into this diary.This diary is split into three sections: The first section is a species listing and entry for your first sighting, with fields for date, location, and empty space for notes. The species are listed in an order similar to Sibley's field guides. The next section is a checklist in the same species order as the first section. Each species has a row of seven boxes for you to check off for your multiple sightings. The last section is the life list. Each of page contains 64 rows for a total of 1024 entries.How can diary be improved? Well the ability to cross reference between three sections. The index is alphabetized by species name and it lists two page numbers, one for the species listing and the other for checklist. To entry a new species, it is faster to check the index then flip through the pages for first two sections. What I find tedious is having to refer back to the index after filling out species listing. It takes times make an entry, so by the time you are done writing down the date, times, and additional notes you forget the page number for checklist. Back to index again to find checklist page. Here is my suggestion: each species in both section should reference each other since the page numbers are fixed. The species listing section should have a field with the page number for the checklist and each species in the checklist should have the page numbers next to boxes for species listing. No back and forth to index!The last part of a new species entry is the life list. You list a new species in the order you see them. An improvement would be a field in the species listing where you can write the page number of that species in the life list. It would nice to have, but in the mean time I have been writing in the notes space what page to find the species in the life list. There is enough space in each species' row to entry the page numbers for species listing and checklist, but it would be nice to have pre-printed fields.Overall, I am satisfied with purchasing. It does a good job of keeping track of species. The improvements I have suggested are to make it easier to enter new species and avoid making duplicate entries for an existing ones.

Along with my digital entrees I also keep a records in this book. It has multiple options to record. I like to use colored pens to indicate frequent locations in the list at the back of the book. The first section has larger areas to write detailed information.

I didn't quite realize this when I bought this book, but there are 3 sections for tracking your bird sightings:1. A detailed journal entry for each bird2. A simple checklist for each bird3. A blank list to enter your own birds as you goIt's simple, thorough, and well-organized!
